Well, Ham... View MoreIt’s opening night, Gray’s performing but he cannot help but to notice the young colts and fillies within the audience. His act wavers, they aren’t smiling, they’re bored out of their minds. Well, Hamlet is, and has always been, a very serious and slow-paced play. It is dramatic enough for the adults who understand its complexity, but the children…? Gray was supposed to be this imposing antagonist, the corrupted King, elegant and dark. However, his eyes keep going back to those young faces within the audience. That’s when his act changes, he begins to go wildly off script. He’s more dynamic, he throws in a few gags here and there, positively killing the dark brooding mood and earning a few laughs. The rest of the cast are less thrilled, there’s those who can’t help but to giggle in the face of uncertainty, nerves and frankly, shock… And then there’s those who grimace and succumb to embarrassment. Then there’s those who are just trying to move past it and keep the show going. The longer the act goes, this new character grows within the audience, who in turn laugh at Gray’s antics, including the bored children from before. By the time the play ends and once everyone’s left the theater, Gray gets scolded to hell and back, his agent practically begs the playwright for forgiveness on his behalf, but he is satisfied with himself. “Theater is supposed to be a fun experience, many of those foals are having their first time at the Theater, I don’t want them to remember it as a boring place for adults.” The actor argues inside his dressing room as he rubs the makeup off with a damp towel. Samantha sighs in exasperation “Gray…” she appreciates his heart, but he’s unreasonable. “You have a script, please just… stick to it.” She reprimands. “You might think that you are in the right, but the rest of the cast were lost out there. The playwright was fuming backstage! This isn’t about the children; these ponies have paid to watch a show and they need to get their money’s worth. Do you understand that?” “Yeah.” Gray smiles and leans forward to look at himself in the mirror, he can’t help his cheeky smile. He was proud to have gotten those kids to laugh. He can also see Samantha rolling her eyes in frustration. “…I understand.” He turns to look at her again and his smile softens. “But you won’t convince me that I’m in the wrong.” #rp
