Carriage drawn soldiers The calvary are actually archers, not ponies with lances. They ride in on carriages pulled by ponies trained for speed, using hit-and-run tactics before the enemy can move their formation and get shields in place.

Probably just ponies with lances. I actually imagine lances would be primarily a sport or dueling thing, similar to real-world rapiers. A lance charge in actual pony warfare would likely be extremely ineffective. At least compared to pretty much any other option.
