Dreaded Shadows

Three more lanterns had been lit. Glowing bright white within the presence of Camille. Now that these ghoulish figures had been vanquished. Halfway through the third lantern, the Zebras that had been hiding had once more returned to the fight. Given the time they needed to recover thanks to Camille's efforts. Having sustained a few new injuries of her own, she'd taken up directing where each group should go for the best tactical outcome. Doing so helped her gather the final two lanterns and areas to increase control over the area.

Control. Camille had lost it on that first lantern, showing just how easily she could be pushed over the edge. She reflected over these moments of weakness. If these were real, normal ponies-would she have been seen as a monster? To be fair, she'd always figured that most others viewed her as some sort of monstrosity already.

A sort of chimera with batwings, a lion-like tail, and eyes that shined with the light of blue and the dark of red.

A message had just reached her from one of the many Zebras she’d been fighting alongside of. The Sanctum was under siege, and that alone sent her teetering on the edge of collapse. Her mind instantly fell to the foals she’d been traveling with. Two young fillies she’d promised to protect through thick and thin. Thalia and Crystal were in danger and she was nearly on the other side of town. How could she be so foolish to think they’d be safe on their own?

Her mind had forgotten that they were not technically alone. In any case, it was her mission – her goal – to protect these two fillies until they made it home. Wherever that may be.

Camille nearly flattened the guard that had informed her of the situation. A small part of her kept her physically calm, even if her mind was ablaze with fury. Righteous, uncapped, unhinged fury. A new fire had ignited within the lithe mare, and it was quickly engulfing every inch of her heart. There was no slowing it, no calming, just rapid radiating heat.

She took to the sky, ignoring the pain in her wings from the battles she’d fought so far. Flying up to the perch of one building before jumping from it and soaring to the next. Camille continued this action from building to building until there were no more left. As she passed above, she eyed the battlefields below. Streets that’d turned into rivers of ichor and blood; bodies strewn out in most directions, with many more dragged into burning piles. The stench filled the air with a vile, sick odor that blurred her vision. She fought through the choking haze and made her final glide-to-land flight to the Sanctum.

It was here that her heart nearly stopped. A last few Zebras remained, mostly bleeding from fresh wounds or fading quickly in the dim light. She scanned for survivors that could respond to her, and the only one she’d found pointed into the Sanctum with a limp hoof. They tried to apologize, but Camille knew what they were hinting at.

Heart hammering the bat pony bolted in through the large doors, her eyes adjusting to the limited light quickly as she scanned for survivors. There were none here, and she figured they were all back in the actual sanctuary. That did little to ease her fears. The first room she checked was the one where Thalia and Crystal had been staying.

The only remains here were some drawings on the walls done in chalk. Her breath caught in her throat as she slowly approached the drawings. Camille reached up with a hoof and drew it gently across the doodles left by her fillies. Drawings of them, standing beside an angelic looking Camille. A bright halo above her head, and wings spread wide. It was contradictory, bat-like wings and a halo… A little bit of writing below it gave her a new nickname. Something much less gruesome or dreary.

Camille slowly turned around and found the room was no longer empty. On the side she stood, the world felt cold. Empty. Across from her the room was ablaze with fire and warmth. The feelings of belonging and something drawing her ever closer. At the center she found herself looking at…herself. A version of her with only red eyes. Imagination hinted to Camille that her own were now only blue.

This other version of her spoke with a smooth voice. Almost commanding and not asking questions. Everything said was factual.

“You desire me.”

Camille looked at this doppelganger in confusion.

“You need to let go. You have placed your light heart in the mitts of an insufferable land. A place that deems you enemy for simply doing the right thing.”

Once more Camille remained looking at the clone, but this time she could understand the words. They buzzed in her head, giving her a sensation bordering on pain and relief.

“Let me take control. Only for now. Let me lead the way and you will no longer feel the agony of the torment. I alone can release you from the darkness.”

“If I let you in,” Camille started to say, only to be interrupted by her copy.

“You aren’t letting me in, Camille. You’re letting me out.”

“If I let you…out, as you say… You won’t hurt anyone that’s innocent, will you? You’ll protect them?”

“I give you my promise,” Camille lied.
There was a sudden silence that filled the entire Sanctuary, as if all fights had finally reached a conclusion…

The world around the city seemed to explode into vibrant light and sound. Reflecting and echoing off the walls, refracting back and forth. A door was then kicked from its hinges as a released Camille climbed through. Almost as if she was no longer simply hunting her prey but stalking them. A towering beast before her turned to eye the young mare. The two red eyes looking back at it almost completely stunned the creature.

That moment of weakness, that silence, the sudden stun, was all that it took. The beast’s head fell to the floor, followed a moment later by its body in a thud that shook the room. Blood dripped from the claw of Camille’s wing as she continued her march forward. A devious smirk on her muzzle as she moved.

“Nuvolosa. Ohhh, Nuvolosaaaa. Come out, come out! I just want to chat!” Camille kicked a door down, sending it flying across the next room. Empty. She moved onto the next one.

“You promised to keep them safe. And your words are important to me. It is so important that I shan’t break your jaw. At least not at first.” A sickly chuckle escaped her as she trudged onwards. “I know you’re not to blame! Just come out and let me see what you hid.”

Dawn was approaching, and Camille knew that it was what this lying monster desired. Breakfast in the form of fillies. Suck their souls away and leave them as empty husks. She recognized the notes from before. The language. Her mother’s stories. Every single one of these details coalesced into a simple answer.

Nuvolosa – Cloudy – was indeed some sort of monster from back in her mother’s day. Cloudy was indeed a sister to Rosa, right? It made sense how she knew Rosa, even now, a thousand years after this village had been destroyed.

“So, what will it be? Will I destroy everything here, tear you to pieces, and leave? Or will you do what’s right and get to feast on souls once more?”

Cloudy stepped out from behind a doorway with a fearful look on her face. She was cautious, as if unsure if the monsters outside were really gone. Until she saw the blood caked monster before her. Camille continued approaching, eyes focused on her target.

“Camille? Please! I promised to keep them safe, and I did! They are in the back!” Cloudy pleaded, holding her hooves up defensively.

“Oh, I believe you, I really do. I just don’t like that I was used to help cure your diseased city.”

“I know, okay! I know! I really needed your help! You’re right, I was there when it fell but I wasn’t the cause, I was trying to help! It was your mother that destroyed the place!”

“Only after she was deemed a demon by the rest. You sought control, and now you have it. Bring the foals to me, and I’ll let you live for your betrayal. Just do this, we leave. I won’t flatten this place.”

Cloudy stared at her for a long moment before suddenly standing straight. “No.”

“No..?”

“You are just like your mother…a-a demon! They saw what you did, Camille…and they don’t want to be with you anymore,” Cloudy stated, stomping a hoof.

“You don’t know that! You’re lying!” Then her eyes caught the two younger gals in the background, holding each other and staring at her in fear. She looked behind her, realizing they had been looking through a window when she took down that large monster. With no remorse. Wild. “I-“

Cloudy stomped her hoof, flicking her tail to point at the door. “Leave, Camille! You’re banished from this sanctuary! I’ll take care of getting them home.” She’d grab an item off of a shelf and toss it towards Camille, the item bouncing across the floor and stopping at her hooves. “Your payment…”

Camille looked down to see an attachment for her gauntlets, an upgrade that could help her move quicker, and quickly engage or disengage her cestus. “But-I made a promise…”

Cloudy scoffed. “You? A promise? Rosa promised, too…but here we are. You spilled blood in the sanctuary, and lost control, y-“

Within an instant, Camille was at her throat, red eyes bright and glaring into her own as the thestral spoke in a deep growl. “I don’t need the list.” She suddenly spun around, kicking Cloudy through the air, the zebra landing and sliding across the floor to the two foals. Just at that time, multiple guards flooded into the room and surrounded her, along with the flapping wings of the Valkyries.

Camille turned slowly, looking to each one. “Oh-hahaha! You seriously invited the bird brains?”

“Camille! You are charged with the murder and destruction of many ponies and homes. Do not run, for we will find you again!”

“I’m tired of running.”

Married To Dawn

"My name is Nuvolosa, but you can call me Nuvo!"

"You want me to call you...New? Why not just...Cloudy?" Camille asked, tilting her head towards the small zebra before her. Nuvolosa - Cloudy - hummed while rubbing her chin.

"Oh, I didn't realize Nuvolosa translated to Cloudy... How sweet! I am still learning so much about all of this stuff it's a lot to take in. Anyways! I'm happy you could join us in the Central Sanctum."

It had only been about an hour since they'd found their way to the sanctum. Camille leaving the two fillies with a caretaker in the most protected portion of the sanctum. She had spent the rest of the time between collecting goods and valuables, purchasing ingredients to create a few concoctions and potions. A few extra weapons she'd not normally use.

"So, you invited me in, which I appreciate the kindness, but you have yet to tell me anything that's been happening." Camille commented, stepping around a stone cartography table in the center. The map of the city drawn out on it with crafted figurines to show important positions. Water and food sources, where they get necessary ingredients, and the paths in and out. A large portion of it was currently glowing red with tiny, enchanted lantern models. She sighed, realizing what was going on.

"War?"

Cloudy nodded slowly, her ears lowering a bit. "I'm sorry to ask, but...will you please help us? We are almost out of resources and they are pinning us back. B-before you answer! I know you're the daughter of the Pink Knight, so you can easily do this!"

"I am not the same as my mother, Cloudy. She would cull them and end it, but I don't kill. So, unless you're ready to deal with prisoners, feeding them and caring for them even though they are hurting you, then I can't provide assistance."

"No! I mean, yes! We can handle it, we just need you to push them back! Once we have resources, we can full restock the city and care for even the enemy," Cloudy begged, stomping a hoof on the table. "Even if I want them dead for killing ours..."

Camille sighed, slowly stepping closer to the table and looking it over. "Fine, I'll do this. Give me some time to prepare, and I'll set out at dusk. I must warn you, my main goal is those fillies. If my list gets called, I must take care of my duties. But, until that happens, I will do what I can. Just know, something happens to them, I will destroy everything to find the culprit."

Cloudy looked very worried at this, but shook her head after a moment, then nodded. "Deal, Camille. All resources here are at your disposal."

"I only need a few."
Camille prepared. Using bandages to wrap her legs and body up. She wasn't injured, but would use them for protection. Sure, it sounds weak, but these bandages were dipped in a special brew she had made. Harmony Tonic is potent when applied to bandages, able to apply instant - but slow - healing to afflicted areas. She dawned her cloak, pulling it in tight. Then, finally, she wrapped a few bandages over her one blue eye.

It was time to hunt.
Night

Night had fallen not long ago. Camille made her way through the streets with her head low. The first lantern was ahead, glowing low red indicating the presence of...something. Cloudy had been forthcoming with everything except for what Camille was up against. She would just go pale and shake until Camille comforted her with a hoof. What Camille was about to find would make her question reality in its whole. She'd fought so many creatures, wild animals to the abominations conjured by wannabe gods. What she encountered here brought a whole new meaning to undead.

"What the fuck?"

A shambling group of undead, ghoulish figures turned in tandem to face her. She reared up, stepping back at this. She stopped, realizing at first they weren't moving very quickly. That was until one of them screamed. Every single one of them took off towards her like a herd of hungry wolves. She instantly knew that this wasn't the same. Everything had a soul, plants, animals, ponies, zebras, all of it. But these creatures...were soulless. They would stop at nothing to destroy. To kill. Even eat. What the hell were they?

As the first one came close enough to attempt bighting down on her leg, she knew there was only one answer. So, she readied her gauntlets and began pumbling her way through each one. The hits, though, weren't as she expected. Her hoof blasted through the first one, and it shocked her to see it fall. They'd say "lifeless" to most, but as the first one collapsed, her heart felt like it was going to stop. Breathing became difficult and her eyes stared on in shock. As the second jumped onto her, she flailed out, bucking the undead off and sending it through a nearby window. Ichor splashed across the shattered glass.

Camille backed away slowly, realizing she'd just..."killed." But, was it killing? These things had no minds, just instinct. Wasn't instinct enough? As she stepped backwards, she could see the bodies of zebras around her, many having passed days ago, some recently. A husband having died over his husband's decaying body.

"No...remorse..." Camille mumbled, anger flaring in her body. She turned towards the oncoming herd and bolted towards them. The pain remained in her chest, but she tore them apart. One by one, flipping over and rolling by, planting hits that would break bones normally. All of which turning parts to mist and sending the rest flopping over.

"No...Remorse!" Camille cried out, jumping over one and grappling onto its head, flipping over and launching the head off its body into a group of others. Strike!

"NO REMORSE!" the Godhunter screamed.

"DAWN SHALL BEQUEATH YOUR END. MARRY IT." The Godhunter bellowed, destroying monster after monster... The lantern turned bright white, flooding the area with a light that resonated within her.

Calm filled Camille as she stopped beside it, panting heavily and staring into the light.

Back at the Sanctum, Cloudy watched as the lantern changed color, hope filled her heart at the sight, but the flame beside it, the signature of Camille, burned with something that filled her with new fear.

Ashes

Cool ashes and charred wood crunched beneath the hooves of the Huntress. Each step a reminder of what had happened to this kingdom. Regno Dell'alba - The Kingdom of Dawn.

"Miss Camille, what happened here? And why have I not heard of this place before?" Crystal asked, kicking a small crumbling brick wall that seemed to fall with way too much ease. She eeped softly before jumping back to walk beside Camille. Staring at the crumbling, charred buildings that surrounded them.

A smaller filly, a crystal pony with blank eyes, hopped up and down on Camille's back. "Oh, oh, I know this place! It smells like...like... Ashes!"

Camille hummed softly, peeking back over her shoulder at Thalia. "Thalia, calm. And stop making so much noise. It may be quiet now, but that gives those hiding the upper hand. Stay close."

Thalia and Crystal looked at each other, nodded once, then fell silent. Crystal's steps seemed to silence as well. They knew not to question Camille when it came to these situations. No need to draw unwanted attention on their little adventure while, one, Camille was still wanted, and two, enemies are of plenty. Especially when it comes to Crystal Ponies - more specifically, the ones that are crystalized outside of the Crystal Kingdom. It's a rarity to the fullest meaning of the word.

They passed through buildings, eyes searching every inch to find evidence as to what had happened here - beyond the fires. Camille frowned as she noticed something missing. Not only were there no living souls, there were no deceased bodies or even skeletons. This instantly put her on edge. No death usually means plenty of ponies are either missing, or they left in a hurry. For what?

"Miss Camille!" Crystal called, tapping her hoof on a worn out, partially burned paper. Camille trotted closer, leaning in to take a good look at it. "I can't read it, Miss...it's in some sort of strange tongue..."

"Tongue is what you speak, this is hoof. More importantly, it's scripture. For the Dusk as fallen, Dawn shall rise. For the Dawn rises, always, here. Burnt blues and auburn to purple. Hoof to stone. This is written in Zebraic... but Zebras don't live out here ever since their attempts at a city in the Everfree failed. They mostly stayed to their homelands."

"The strangest part," Camille continued, "it also reads like a plea for protection. They fear the night, and look for the dawn for protection. No, Zebraic... They aren't speaking of actual night. Mom always said that the difference between Night and Knight - with a 'k' - is a heartbeat. I get what she means by that now. Burnt blues and auburn to purple, they are talking about the fires...hoof to stone must be escape. They wrote this expecting only each other to understand, but not whatever did this."

"Woah, you are like...a detective!" Thalia said with a giggle.

Camille chuckled softly, turning and leading Crystal out of the building. Her attention turning now to the tallest building up the path. A short walk there and they were met with a door made of thick steel. She tried to push it open, but it just wouldn't budge. Camille extended a wing out and angled it towards the ground. Thalia slid down it feeling the change in Camille's body and landed just beside Crystal. Then, in one swift motion, Camille spun around on a hoof and landed a hard kick on the door. The door exploded off of its hinges, flying across the large room ahead and clattering to the floor. Both fillies lest out a whoop as the three entered.

The thestral stopped, using her wing to stop the other two as she looked up into the darkness above. Her eyes quickly adjusted to see the figures there. Suddenly they dropped down, surrounding the three and aiming spears at them.

Camille looked between them, wing covering the other fillies protectively. "Kami tidak bermaksud menyakiti Anda. Veniamo in pace. Ons kom in vrede."

The zebras looked around in confusion, one slowly stepping forwards. "Sei la figlia del demone rosa?"

"Rosa Cavalier? Sì. Mi chiamo Camille e sono qui perché ho ricevuto la vostra supplica. Do you speak Ponish?"

One of the zebras suddenly jumped forward and wrapped her in a tight hug. "Please! Help us! We have been scared. Very scared... The Dawn came, and it burned... it burned everything!"

Camille was taken aback, but gently patted the young gal's head. "Hush. I have removed your privacy with my actions. Is there a place we can't be heard?"

"Oh, yes. Yes! Segui, segui!"

The Zebra mare released Camille, turned, and quickly moved behind the throne near the back of the room. The guards seemed to follow, two remaining behind to follow Camille and the fillies in. "Listen, Crystal, Thalia, I need you both on your best behavior. If we are to find your home, we must survive this. Friends are just enemies waiting their turn in my line of work. Plus they know mom..."

"I'm going to get in so much trouble for being here."
