Now, the actor had never been a huge fan, but he seemed to have developed a taste for it in recent times. Who was to blame? Well, one could only guess. Gray had tracked his partner’s every movement from the corner of his eye. Carmine was the one to take care of breakfast; after all, he was the better cook out of the two. This allowed the actor the opportunity to really take in the view from his little nook by the kitchen’s counter. There was something about him… and he couldn’t quite figure out what it was: Was it in the way his scruffy hickory mane fell in front of his tired amber eyes? …The way he carried himself, his mannerisms or the ring of his voice? And then what about the jokes, what about the way he snorted when he was frustrated, and the way his Haybale accent escaped him when he truly was mad? To think that he had gone and fallen for a fool when he himself was one too. It couldn’t be good for their health! And yet Gray had never felt better… Despite his relegation to a support role, the actor assisted in the kitchen however he could. Then they enjoyed the fruits of their labor together at the table. It was short, but it was meaningful. Exchanged kisses at the front door since they both still had to work. Love day and all, it was still a Tuesday! The flowers Gray had delivered to Carmine’s office wouldn’t take long to arrive. It was a rather comically large bouquet, all red roses. The holiday’s flower of choice for lovers! They came accompanied by a basket of goodies: Chocolate truffles, specialty tea mixes, and other premium treats Gray thought might please his favorite detective. Candle lights, roses, chocolate… Every cliché associated with the celebration, Gray had it done and likewise received in return. …But the evening was by far the best part. No, they did not go out anywhere other than their nightly walk and talk. Hand in hand, which soon turned into more of an arm in arm kind of thing… The darkest streets often had the brightest stars, and who would’ve thought? But that night would have one of the clearest starry skies Gray had been lucky enough to witness. Only the lovers knew what all they had talked about, but they did pour their hearts out. Before either noticed, midnight had long since arrived and they were snuggled up nicely at the center of their favorite couch in the living room. Faces illuminated by the TV’s blue light… Gray had his arms around his partner. Having guided him to rest against his chest, the actor’s chin rested atop the detective’s head. It was a wonderful way to culminate their romantic evening. His eyelids felt heavy, and Carmine’s warm embrace didn’t make it any easier to stay awake either. Whatever movie or show they were watching was soon reaching its end when Gray finally broke the settling silence, “Hey…” “I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but I’m kind of into you…” The cheeky actor clicked his tongue. He maintained a mostly serious expression as a jest. Nonetheless, the act soon fell apart with Gray losing his character to a light bout of laughter. In the end, he sighed lovingly. “I love you, Carmen Gumshoe.”
