Every once in a while Asuka and Frank had a call that was gut wren... View More//I tried to make a happy/heartwarming post, but I think I ended up making a sad one. I cried while writing this. Long post warning. Every once in a while Asuka and Frank had a call that was gut wrenching. This was one of them. Little Tots Daycare. 5 PM. Parents come to pick up their children after work. The daycare staff wish their students goodbye, and tell them they can't wait for tomorrow. However, one of the children does not get picked up by a parent. That's because his daycare teacher is his (adoptive) mother. Said mother just so happens to be one of the last teachers to leave today, but that's okay with the toddler. She gives him some animal crackers, juice boxes, and his favorite toy to play with while he waits for her to finish her work. The child is sitting in the large play room in the middle of the daycare while his mother finishes up in her classroom. The door's kept open so she can check on him, though she knows he's a well behaved child. The child's ear's perk. His mother is calling out to him, but not in her usual cheery, sweet voice. The child goes to investigate. He finds his mother sitting in a chair, sweating profusely. She calmly, but shakily tells the child to call 911. Dispatch work was rough, but Dusty always felt good after a shift knowing he'd helped save people's lives. So far in the 10 years of his career he's gotten all sorts of strange calls, including someone asking about the opening time of a local restaurant. The system alerts him, and he decides to pick up the call. "911. What's your emergency?" A small voice comes through the phone. "My mommy's not feeling good." When the ambulance arrived at the daycare Asuka and Frank only find one car in the parking lot. Thankfully the front doors were unlocked, allowing the two to head inside with their stretcher, and equipment. Stepping through the front lobby Asuka spots a young colt standing outside a doorway in the large play room. When he spots the two he calls out through a stream of tears. "Over here." The two power walk into the room to find a mare slumped in a chair. She's drenched in sweat, and breathing quite heavily, but is otherwise conscious. Frank approaches the mare to assess the situation, and Asuka turns to the child in the doorway. Without a second thought she scoops the colt up. He doesn't protest. She speaks quietly, and softly. "Don't worry. You're mommy's going to be okay. We're going to take her to see a doctor." She cradles the child while rocking him gently. "Is she going to get a shot?" The child whimpers. "Maybe. We need to find out what's wrong first." Frank turns to mouth the words Asuka was already thinking. 'Heart attack.' Thank goodness they got there when they did. The mare is helped onto the stretcher,and the two begin to wheel her to the ambulance with Asuka still cradling the child. Despite the pain in her chest, nausea, lightheartedness, and sweating the teacher still manages to make a remark to tell Asuka that she should consider becoming a mother. Frank takes the child up front while Asuka loads his mother into the back. Asuka goes through all the usual procedures, but action beyond a quick defibrillation is deemed unnecessary. The two are dropped off at a nearby hospital, and the doctors/nurses take over from there. After the two are transferred into the care of the hospital the two hop back into their ambulance. Frank turns while the ambulance is still in park. "Ice cream?" The response is a nod. "Ice cream."
