Sir Alistair is the sole remaining member and heir of a once-prominent noble house, the Vandenbergs. A noble line of unicorns spanning back hundreds of years, the Vanderbergs were renowned mages who were often at the forefront of magical innovation throughout the ages. A noble line of unicorns spanning back hundreds of years, the Vanderbergs were renowned mages who were often at the forefront of magical innovation throughout the ages. Though, the Vanderbergs saw a sharp decline in the last century following a seemingly inherited madness consuming many of its members, along with numerous unfortunate events dwindling their numbers even more so. The family began attributing all their losses to a supposed curse on their name and turned their remaining power towards undoing the spell placed over them- though, no real evidence was ever given to prove the existence of said 'curse'. Other Nobility began to distance themselves from the Vanderbergs, either believing in the alleged curse itself or believing the Vanderbergs to be insane.

Alistair was one of the few Vanderbergs born in the past few decades, though his birth was short of being seen as a blessing as the colt was the first non-unicorn to be born into the Vanderbergs in centuries. Instantly, most of the family dismissed him or saw him as a disgrace to their once proud name. Regardless of lacking a horn, Alistair was expected to uphold the Vanderberg's magical legacy and was tutored in the arcane arts. In some subjects, such as alchemy, the stallion was actually capable of doing and excelled at it- although, most of his accomplishments were overlooked by his family. His family's general poor treatment of him for lacking magic made him resentful over the ages, and eventually an obsession to become magical formed.

His search to gain true magical power leads him towards the study of the Occult, the stallion hoping to find his solution within the supernatural. Overtime, Alistair distanced himself from his remaining family as he became consumed with his studies, all the while the Vanderbergs continued to dwindle out till even his mother and father were killed in a tragic accident. Soon he was the last Vanderberg standing, the disgrace of the family taking up the mantle of responsibility for the family's future. Fear eats away at him daily that he too will fall to the Vanderberg curse, fueling his drive to find his magical solution and outlive the curse that haunts him.
