Design Description

Dusk is tall and lithe, and is cursed to turn into a big furry chimera sometimes. Y'know, the usual! He's got dark circles under his eyes and a dark blue mane with black fringes.

Dusk is an intelligent stallion, but that intelligence is woefully overshadowed by his immense propensity for laziness and laxadaisical life. However, as the only son of a high-ranking official of the Canterlot royal guard, these traits were not always inherent to his personality. Despite the fact that Dusk had much less obligation or hardship compared to most ponies, the expectations set upon him by his father were crushing in his youth, driving him to develop a personal complex of perfectionism to keep up with those expectations. Once that perfectionism seemed unattainable in adult life, he swung like a pendulum to the polar opposite of the spectrum, becoming not just lazy and carefree, but also completely reckless and with zero consideration for his own well-being. Teen angst turned to maximum, the embodiment of "you can't fail if you never try". This very attitude ended up being a bit of a blessing once he became branded with the Lycoris curse, which is a big bad dark magic spell that tends to turn him into a chimeric monster. But more on that in his personal history.

He could be considered reserved, and that's not to say he's antisocial, but rather he never really shows his hand (or hoof) unless he knows you on a personal level of absolute trust. If you're new to him, you're more likely to see him use comedy and misdirection as a defense mechanism to avoid any kind of emotional vulnerability. Despite this, he remains genuine and amicable to most ponies he encounters, and would find it more than difficult to actually act mean-spirited to someone. One thing that's never changed for Dusk throughout the years is that he's extremely empathetic towards others (even strangers), which be both a boon and a curse, usually in equal measure. Dusk's attitude towards the Lycoris curse placed upon him is actually quite optimistic. He thinks it's cool as heck, he's got no angst and no insecurity about it, he only starts to feel that it's a nuisance once it starts making it difficult to walk around without people giving him looks. So he still tries to be careful with metamorphizing haphazardly. In truth, this approach to what will one day amount to a life-threatening affliction is just as much true optimism as it is another defense mechanism. If he pretends he's not bothered by it, he hopes he can convince himself by keeping up the charade. It's complicated.

Born to a stallion that would soon become the single father of his only son, Dusk was born into wealth. He was intelligent and studious, and though being a Pegasus in a city of magic was a bit out of place, he still made his way through the education system just fine, like all the other non-unicorn children. By the time high school had come to an end and Dusk was sent off to Canterlot University to study, he was quickly overwhelmed by the extreme change in his life, and no matter how hard he tried, the grades were dropping far below what he'd ever received in high school. This destroyed his self-esteem, and by the end of his first year, his grades teetering on the brink of expulsion from the University, Dusk decided that he needed to take a break. It wasn't for his own mental health, it was because he was afraid of what would happen if he went back for another year of school.

Much to his father's chagrin, he put his studies on hold and decided that he needed a change of scenery. Knowing that his mother was originally from Ponyville, and not really caring about what happened to him or his life, he set off for Ponyville by a midnight train just to see what would happen and go on an adventure. By the time he arrived in Ponyville, it was no big deal to use dad's fat stacks of cash to get himself an apartment. He also got a part-time job working the student store at Velvet Hooves University, located in Ponyville. It was in that job that he met one of the students of VHU, another stallion named Halcyon. They quickly became close friends, and for the first time since high school, Dusk had someone he could count on to talk to casually, or just hang out for fun.

Life was easy and smooth for months down in Ponyville, and even though Dusk was running from his own future, he was finding a bit of calm in his life. Meanwhile, though, on the other side of the world, his father went on a mission for the Royal Guard. And on that mission, trying to free a small Equestrian village from the clutches of a sorcerer, he failed to capture his target. The sorcerer told Dusk's father that he'd pay for his transgressions, and unbeknownst to him or the rest of the royal guard, their enemy was far more powerful and practiced in dark magic than they could have imagined. Dusk's father ended up paying in a way that he couldn't have predicted, though, and the very next morning, all the way in Ponyville, Dusk woke up to find that his cutie mark had disappeared, and was replaced with a peculiar red flower. Thankfully, he wasn't one to fret things like that, so he just moved on with his life. It only posed a problem once he realized that letting his emotions flare up would also result in him transforming into a monstrous chimera - albeit one that was still capable of speech and cognitive thought.

The nature of his curse, the Lycoris Curse, was an ancient ritual devised back in the olden days of old boomer ponies for when you not only wanted somepony gone, but you wanted them to suffer in the process. In addition to turning them into a beast that couldn't live amongst other ponies, they would slowly lose their mind over a certain period of years, becoming less recognizeable every time they transformed until eventually, their body could take it no longer. The final stage of the curse usually involved a mad bloodlust, like a ticking timebomb that had finally gone off, followed by the cursed pony's eventual demise.

In some ways, Dusk thinks to himself that maybe the curse is the universe's way of trying to tie back together his estranged relationship with his father. But for now at least, he just doesn't even care.
