Coal Train

Colette was first born in the city of Cantlerlot. Their parents, Diamond Cutter and Pink Splendour were high class jewellery owners and designers. Though their family seemed sophisticated enough, their ownership over mines and use of diamond dogs as workers was sinister in retrospect. Throughout their youth, Colette was groomed for success but rejected the notion of high fashion at every turn. It didn’t take long before their parents and colleagues began to reject them in return when they took to grouping themselves in with the street kids in the lower echelons of Canterlot. Their parents quickly turned against them when Colette changed their name to Coal and came out as a trans. It was no matter to their family in the end, as Coal was replaced by their younger sibling, Dark Star. And Coal was forgotten and cleaned away like a grease stain from their family books. With some help from the street gangs, Coal was able to find a mentor in something far more engaging to them than jewellery craftsmanship. Vehicles and machines. Specifically, the railway trains that travelled near and far all across Equestria. Without a home to go to, Coal hitched a place with Dusty, their elder mentor aboard their coal train. They travelled to Appleloosa many times over, and would have a front row experience in repairs and piloting the big rig. Coal’s interest never stopped there, and they pursued their hobby of tinkering with all sorts of broken technology during their journeys. They’d make a few extra tips when they offered to repair some passengers' broken clocks, watches, cameras and more. They proved to be a natural at repairing almost anything with moving and connecting parts. After a few years, Coal took a trip to Maretime Bay and fell in love with the ocean and its laid back atmosphere. They found a lot of business there in the span of a week and were asked to come back to town soon by the locals. It appeared to Coal that they found a calling and aimed to move there and open up a workshop. Dusty helped him move and built Coal’s shed with him out near the bay within the next year. After that, Coal remained and became the official handy-stallion of the town. His official name became Coal Train after their love and respect for them.
