Seven years ago a troll from the planet Alternia began to play a game with eleven of her friends. That game was merely a framework for a multiverse-spanning forge designed to create new universes, and the consequences for its use were great loss. Six years ago that troll and one of her new human friends found themselves to be in a doomed timeline, nothing but food for the Horror Terrors if they did not escape to a new reality. They managed to flee to a war-torn Equestria, in a timeline created by Starlight Glimmer, and the dark magic the human used lead to her death at the hooves of that version of Celestia’s soldiers. The troll found the magic she needed to disguise herself as a pony at a mirror portal in Equestria, and used the tools of the universe forge to impose that disguise on herself. Five years ago the troll, now alone in the multiverse, traveled from world to world in search of new ways to put her life at risk, only to stumble upon the alpha timeline of Equestria at the height of her exhaustion. Four years ago a stallion in a blue box took pity on the troll, whose disguise became more magically taxing to maintain everyday, and he brought her to an alchemist who could remove that burden. She accepted the offer, and became permanently transmuted into a pony. Some of her anatomy was too alien to Equestria for its alchemy and magic to transmute, and these small details mark her as alien still. Two years ago a boy closed the loop that the universe forge had been trapped in, and the Horror Terrors that had stalked the doomed timelines ceased their interference. The troll finally felt peace.

This is that troll, Kanaya Maryam. She lost her connection to the magic of the universe forge when the loop was closed, and has since quietly integrated herself into Equestrian society. Most ponies assume her strange Cutie Mark somehow indicates her sewing skills, but anypony who has traveled to the human world to see their night sky knows it to be the Virgo symbol. The thirst for blood she has as a Rainbow Drinker is hardly unique in Equestria, and her calcified antennae merely cause other ponies to wonder if her parentage somehow includes a minotaur, in spite of the impossibility of such a thing. She’s even trained her odd accent out of her speech, though she does slip back into it with old friends or while in private. After successfully applying for Equestrian citizenship, Kanaya became a seamstress and fashion designer, settling into a career that she could never have had on her violent homeworld.
