Her father is a unicorn named Golden Lockbox and he’s a very successful investment banker and adventure capitalist. Her mother, however, is arguably the most famous of her family, especially for those who follow the worlds of fashion; a pegasus named Sapphire Shore. Breathtakingly beautiful and very posh, she’s a runway fashion model, designer, starlet, and singing sensation in certain parts of the world. Her little brother, a unicorn named Dazzling Jaunt, is extremely handsome and is following their mother; a singer in a boy band and himself a fashion model. Her family are all very eccentric and needy people. Distant, on the other hand, is more down to the earth. While her mother is beautiful in the tall, breathtaking, cut from marble kind of way... Distant Shores is a more pretty, girl next door type. I like to think she's gorgeous, but her mother always thought her plain. And was... while well-meaning, very unkind to Shores while she was going up. Sapphire Shores would constantly remind her how plain and average Distant Shores was, and try to steer her out of anything resembling the family's constant limelight. There's a pretty pivotal moment in Distant Shores’ life where, when she was a filly, her mother was going to be on an interview show and the producers of the show asked if they wanted to bring out Distant so Sapphire could wish her a happy birthday on air.Sapphire’s response was: 'Oh, goodness, dear? Is it really your birthday? Oh, heavens, I suppose it is. Well... hmn. No, I don't think so. No. I mean, we wouldn't want to depress the audience, no would we? And really, my cherub, wouldn't you be more comfortable with a party better suited for someone like you? Something more... I don't know. More ordinary? Something a bit more plain? Besides, look at you. You're not television ready, darling.' Something that crushed poor Distant at the time, and left her with a deep-rooted inferiority complex. (Well, that moment and a lifetime of moments like it.)But despite the emotional pain, she loves her family deeply, near obsessively. And she grew up taking care of them and managing all their eccentric quirks; applying cold and warm compresses while they lay on fainting couches, cooking their meals, and preparing their teas just right. And despite it all, Distant Shores enjoyed doing it, even when it pushed her to exhaustion or illness. She's a natural caregiver. Taking care of and healing others is her deepest passion. When she sees a heart in distress, she can't help but want to hold it close to her and love it until all the wounded cracks fade away. Her mother, being what she was, she encouraged Shores toward pursuits more suited for girls that Sapphire deemed 'less camera worthy', and Shores found she excelled at academics. In fact, her grades were one of the few things she ever received regular praise for growing up. She became an avid and eager learner and reader. Any subject fascinated her. That's how she came into marine biology and surfing. On their travels, her family frequently stayed seaside and Shores fell in love with the ocean. She thought it was like her -- usually plain and flat, but when the stars come out, it reflects all the beauty of the night back. In her damaged heart, she can't imagine herself as anything more than plain and average, but she knows she can reflect the beauty and love of anypony she meets. And so she started looking for books about the sea, and eventually, in one of her precious few displays of childish rebellion, started sneaking away when her family was busy to try swimming diving. She found herself a coach, who was also a surfer, and he taught her that as well.Swimming and surfing was a wonder for Shores. She's a very weak flier, normally. She must really work hard to get herself airborne. But she found her wings perfect for gliding and balancing while surfing and for propelling herself forward at incredible speeds and with such fine control while swimming. She loved it. The warmth of the beach, the feel of the sand, the rush of the water. She loved the ocean! An unusual occurrence (a chain of accidental events that began with some foals playing on the beach with a ball, to a fishing boat, to a sea serpent leaping out of the water and snapping at a griffon overhead) lead to an abnormally large wave, near tsunami in size, rushing toward her while Shores was out swimming on her board, about to bring herself in. And instinctively and with noteworthy aplomb, she managed to ride that massive wave all the way back to the sandy beach in perfect, even stylish fashion. And boom! That's when she got her cutie mark.A few years later, Shores decides that her career was going to be one in education; partially motivated by her mother (as teaching is a perfectly acceptable thing for an 'average mare' to do), and partly because Shores loves to love and loves to help others become better versions of themselves in any fashion possible. And there's no better way to express and share love or help ponies grow than by the sculpting the minds of young foals such that she might help them better understand themselves and the world around them! Her first taste of freedom, away from her family, came when she went to university. And though she was only there a couple of years before she earned her certifications to teach, it helped her come out of her shell somewhat and to see the world in a slightly different way. Still, she's a very sheltered pegasus and very naive. But she’s also very empathic (the natural form, not the supernatural form). She just has a real knack for reading others and knowing what people are feeling by their expressions and body language. And she would do anything to help another in need, even if it means put herself at risk. She never, ever thinks about herself first. She would happily endanger her entire being it meant seeing a stranger smile. When she was preparing to graduate, her maternal grandfather -- Sapphire Shore's father -- was very ill and about to pass away. Named Wayward Hearts, he never cared for the way his daughter treated Distant. He’d been there when Distant was a filly and Sapphire broke her heart on her birthday. And Wayward was the only pony in her family to comfort Distant when her little heart was shattered.Wayward knew that Distant needed a fresh start, away from her family. Somewhere that she could learn who she truly was, and what would make her happy. So that maybe she could realize how beautiful and valuable she truly was. So he arranged with the village leadership to have Distant hired as the new school teacher, since the old one retired and left the town some time ago. And in his will, Wayward left Distant his beach house and all his belongings, including all those rare objects acquired from his own world travels, Wayward having been a collector of rare antiques and artifacts. And so here Distant is. Starting off her new life and her new career. What wonders, adventures, and new friends await her? Only time will tell.
