Witherwind Destrier is a adult age pegasus stallion whose gentle eyes portray lingering sorrow. Once a pony of great trust and love, he has been shaped by betrayal and hardship, becoming as a quiet, resourceful protector for his beloved daughter Varnish Destrier.

Witherwind was born to an earthpony and pegasus parent in Fillydelphia. He was took on the Destrier name – proud and strong, with amazing storm-grey dual-colorwings. Unlike some of his louder family members, he was calmer and liked to think, keeping quiet. He loved being alone in the nearly woodland, finding peace in the huge open space of the world and sky.

Unlike some of his louder family members, he was calmer and liked to think, keeping quiet. He loved being alone in the nearly woodland, finding peace in the huge open space of the world and sky.

He dreamed of a life filled with flying high atop the clouds, a partner he could trust, and a warm home under the open sky. His dream seemed to come true when he met Damselfly Heartwheel, a unicorn mare whose bright colors and free spirit totally charmed him. He was fully committed, giving his heart with no doubts, believing their bond would last forever, like the sky. Together, they made a home in Fillydelphia. Married now, Damselfly Heartwheel became Damselfly Destrier.

The coming of their young daughter, Varnish Destrier, was the brightest morning of Witherwind's life. He was in love right away. Varnish, with her curious eyes and playful neighs, became his entire world. He spent many, many hours teaching her to feel the air currents you couldn't see, to understand the soft sounds of the wind, and watched with huge pride as she had her own strong desire to fly.

Then, this dream was torn apart. Damselfly, restless and never really happy with Witherwind's calm, honest love, started to pull away. The signs were hard to notice at first—she was gone for longer periods, she looked at him coldly, and she felt further away when he touched him. Witherwind, too loving to see clearly, thought it was because of her free spirit, the natural urge of unicorns to be mysterious.

The truth was far crueler. Damselfly had found another, a showier, more adventurous pegasus who promised excitement Witherwind couldn't or wouldn't give her. The divorce was not a gentle parting of ways. It was a harsh break-up, a vile shame that broke Witherwind's trusting heart into pieces. Damselfly, cold and stubborn, took their home, leaving Witherwind with nothing but his broken world and the huge responsibility of young Varnish. The betrayal hurt him very deeply.

Having lost his home everything, Witherwind and Varnish were left with no clear path. They are homeless, finding shelter in hidden caves, under the thick cover of old forests, or on open, windy cliffs. Foraging for food when they had no money and saving whatever they did have.

The final, worst blow came when Damselfly cut off contact with Varnish completely, not helping or talking to her. It hurt Witherwind badly, not for his own sake, but for his innocent, young daughter. In that moment, Witherwind realized that Varnish was truly all he had, and he, all she had. He learned to be both father and mother, one who keeps her safe and makes her feel better, putting her needs first, even over his own. He might still carry the pain of her mother leaving both of them, but he never lets it make his daughter less happy or safe.
