Zevana spent her childhood traveling the far flung corners of the world with her family, herself being the second youngest among five other siblings. Her mother and father were unicorns and both exceptionally gifted with innate magical abilities which they used to heal the sick and wounded. If there was a natural disaster, plague, or any need where their skills could be put to good use they went to it, no matter the distance or danger, and given that fact Zevana's family was rarely in one place long.

Her parents were both devout pacifists and traditionalists, shunning all forms of violence as immoral and decrying the vice and decadence of modern Equestrian society. While not without love they expected much from all their children and expected them to live up to their moral expectations.

Zevana's upbringing was strict with little time for play or normal childhood activities between traveling, learning, and healing. Practically as soon as she was able to walk she was helping her family in the healing tents where she learned quickly and before her tenth birthday she was magically setting broken bones and stitching wounds by herself. Being exposed to such traumatic injuries, illnesses, and death at such a young and delicate age had its effect on Zevana, desensitizing her though she did enjoy helping those in need.

As Zevana grew older she turned into a serious young mare, much like her parents, but unlike them, she did not have the natural propensity towards pacifism that the rest of her family seemed to have. Always criticized by her family for her 'aggression' and 'bad temper' she was more or less the black sheep of the family and the first to be blamed when anything wrong happened. As she entered her upper teens she found that her discontent and bitterness only grew.

Given the fact that her family often traveled to remote and lawless areas, it was not uncommon for them to run into the occasional highwayman or bandit while on the road, their large wagons often an irresistible target to such predators. More than once Zevana and her family found themselves surrounded by gangs of robbers and violent criminals and every time, to Zevana's utter disgust, her parents would submit meekly as their belongings were stolen. She grew to hate her parents for letting it happen, to putting herself and her siblings in danger because they were too cowardly to defend their family but hit it under the guise of self-righteous pacifism.

The final straw happened whenever her family was traveling to Saddle Arabia to help a city that recently suffered from a massive earthquake. While of the road her family's wagon's were accosted by a large gang of bandits who demanded that her father surrender all their valuables. Her father gave what they had but the bandits did not believe him and began to yell at her father, shoving at him and demanding that he give them the rest of the valuables. Again Zevana's father tried to explain that he gave them all they they had but this only enraged the bandits who began to beat her father, shoving him to the ground and kicking and stomping on him while he begged them to stop and the rest of his family looked away in horror, except for Zevana. She just couldn't sit there and watch her father get beaten to death so she acted, using her magic she sent a shock wave of concussive energy towards the bandits, sending them sprawling across the ground and gasping for air and, like all opportunist predators, quickly ran back into the wilderness once they realized that they prey was not so helpless. Her father was unconscious by the time the bandits fled and had received several broken ribs and a moderate concussion but nothing life-threatening. Whenever he woke he was not grateful for his daughter's actions, as Zevana hoped he would, but instead expressed his disappointment in her for succumbing to her violent urges and brought herself to the same level as the bandits that attacked him.

Heartbroken and furious Zevana remained silent while her father, who without her intervention would have probably been beaten to death, had the nerve to say she was as immoral as the bandits for defending this life. Later that night Zevana collected her few belongs and while the rest of the family was asleep she slipped away and headed towards Canterlot where she applied to the Royal Guards, a decision which would horrify her whole family to the core and began a new life.
