Born in Canterlot to a pegasus father and unicorn mother, Ember had been blind since her first breath. As a result, her parents were very protective of her. Everywhere she went, her parents had a trusted pony keeping tabs on her. She hated it, but what could she do? As a filly, she was followed around by at least one pony. Everywhere she went, her parents had a trusted pony keeping tabs on her. She hated it, but what could she do? As a filly, she was followed around by at least one pony. When the other fillies noticed, they stayed far away from her as rumours spread that her parents were ex-mafia from Manehattan. Of course, this was untrue. They just had the money to make sure someone could watch their filly at all times. She was homeschooled by her parents as a result of her blindness, and it mostly consisted of her father reading books to her. Anything she wanted to learn was read to her from a book. And one specific event would influence her to learn what would become her favourite subject.

One afternoon, Ember was becoming even more annoyed by the pony following her. She was able to distinguish them by the sound of their hooves. After all, she relied on her senses of touch and hearing in order to get around. So, without warning, she ran off into a crowd, using her hearing to avoid crashing into folks. The problem was that As she ran, folks began to stomp their hooves. Unsure of what was happening, she continued to run until she bumped into something.

She heard a crowd gasp and the clunking of armour, and the blind unicorn turned her head, trying to figure out what was going on. Then she heard a kind voice voice address her.

"Are you alright, little filly?" The voice would ask. She'd turn her head to the source of the voice, before nodding. "Yes.. I'm alright. Apologies miss.." She'd say, before standing. She'd been knocked to a sitting position when she bumped into the mare, after all. The mare, which was Princess Celestia herself, shook her head. Ember didn't recognize the voice of the Princess, as she'd never been allowed to go to any festivals. The Princess had already noticed that the filly couldn't see a thing, as her clouded eyes was the telltale sign of blindness. "No, it's alright.
