Nebby was one of Eve's students LONG ago and was the first and only to graduate, as his fellow students were murdered not long after his graduation. Once he heard that they had been killed and Eve imprisoned he became withdrawn and lost emotionally. Those girls were his friends, his sisters and he grew to love Eve as a mother.
