Alright, I figured it out.
First, the world must be open by the world owner.
Then players must go to "Single Player", and select "Join LAN World", and enter the code(which is different every time the world owner turns on LAN).

yes, wait for me to be on. but how my friends do it, is by pressing multiplayer then direct connect. it didn't work for you cuz obviously you tried RIGHT as I left the world.
