There's really no harm with playing a character at different ages. RP is basic story telling, and a story could be about someone now, then, and later. At least, that's how I view it.

There's always a way, just most times it's not simple. Could always have some sort of indication to hint which is going on. Some may not pick up on it, but one could be past tense and the other present tense.

First off, I feel the "unrealistic made up age" is a shot at the age of a made up character. That's basically over thinking it in the first place. Second, age is just a number. Maybe things change, maybe they don't. That'd be for you to figure out and decide. Like I said, I was just giving ideas.
