//This is the first of two 'lore' blogs i'll be posting in the near future. The other blog should be posted either today, or tomorrow.
No one ever said the road to becoming a wizard would be easy, but then again no one ever thought it was. For the longest time you were either born magically gifted, or you weren't worth a teachers time. Equestria had a funny way of telling unicorns "you can do anything!" only to disregard them if they weren't born gifted. That wasn't the case anymore. With the rise of technology, and how accessible things were now young unicorns had access to all the resources they needed to develop their magic capabilities.
Golda Mithrum had dreamed of becoming a wizard ever since she was a foal. Their mastery of the arcane, and knowledge of all things magical raptured young Golda. So much so that she even told her parents she wanted to attend magic school. Unfortunately for the aspiring wizard her parents had other plans. Being the daughter of a casino owner, and stay at home mother made her chances of becoming a wizard slim to none.
"A wizard?! Sweetie, ya gotta think of a more practical career choice! Like an accountant, or business administrator! You wanna get somewhere in this world, you gotta make money. You ain't gonna do that by runnin' around in your 'Bunions, and Flagons' fantasy!" Golda had known from a young age what her father wanted from her. He wanted her to take over his business when he grew old, but Golda wasn't keen on owning a casino that was affiliated with a local mafia.
Her mother was just as appalled. "Golda you aren't serious about this are you? Magic is a dying field. Equestria doesn't need any of these fancy wizard ponies you talk about. You should listen to your father. We don't want you to end up poor on the streets!"
Golda wasn't convinced. Nor was she going to give up on becoming a wizard. Magic was not dying. It was flourishing. If anything technology was making magic more important. Her 5th grade teacher had taught her this, and by the time she was in 7th grade she had made up her mind.
"GOLDA CORINTH MITHRUM! YOU GET YOUR FLANK BACK INSIDE THIS HOUSE RIGHT NOW!" Leaving her parents wasn't all that easy for Golda. They had done so much for her as she grew up, but if they weren't going to let her follow her dream she was going to find someone who would. She can still remember how her mother wailed, and pleaded for her to stay. Fortunately for Golda she had someone who was willing to set her on the path to wizardry.
Haens Magica helped Arcana enroll in the Las Pegasus School of Magic, and even sheltered, and cared for her during her time there. To Golda Haens had become a father figure. More so than her actual father. It was Haens that gave her new name. "Arcana" he called her. "The name of a future great wizard." With Haens' support, and guidance Arcana excelled in her studies, and was accepted into the Conjuration course at the Canterlot College of Magic. It almost seemed like a dream to Arcana. The acceptance rate of the Canterlot Magic College was incredibly low, and only around 5% of the applicants were actually accepted.
College was the most grueling 6 years of Arcana's life. Through rigorous study, hard work, and tireless devotion she managed to survive those six years, but she didn't do it alone. Johnathan Fritz was far from the perfect bachelor. Meek, clumsy, and somewhat brooding, but Arcana quickly found out that there was more to this stallion than he let on. Johnathan was kind, compassionate, and fiercely loyal. Even if he showed up to classes late, and got on the professors nerves Arcana knew he was trying his hardest.
The two began dating during Arcana's second year in college. Without his support, and love Arcana wasn't sure she'd be able to complete the course she enrolled in. After she had graduated Arcana had become a Professor's Assistant, and found herself working even more than she had as a student. Lesson plans needed to be made, events scheduled, and equipment inspected. Even through all of this Johnathan was there whenever she needed him. It came as no surprise to her when Johnathan popped the question to her a year later.
The two were happily married a year after Arcana became a PA. Only then did Johnathan reveal his true nature. Johnathan was a necromancer. He practiced a forbidden art that could be used to create undead, and summon ghouls and ghosts. Despite this Arcana reaffirmed her vows. She knew Johnathan had too big of a heart to use his powers to harm others. Johnathan used necromancy to help. To spare the dying. To root out the evils that lurk below the surface. He wanted to show the world that necromancy could be used for good, and so did Arcana.
Through persuasion, and a lot of luck Johnathan got his chance. He was given a class in the basement of the Canterlot College of Magic to teach low level necromancy. Should word of his class reach anyone outside of the class itself he would surely be imprisoned for the rest of his life. Johnathan knew this. Arcana knew this. Even the Dean of the college knew this, but they proceeded regardless.
When the professor of Conjuration retired Arcana took up his position, and began teaching the course herself. With stable jobs, a roof above their heads, and a bright future Arcana and Johnathan began to shift their thoughts on the future. Maybe they could start a family, and finally settle down.
