Finally, sunlight had broken through. The winter had dragged on a few weeks longer than it should have, and the general temperature in Equestria was still cold, in a mildly unpleasant way. Fortunately for those who had longed to venture out but who had stayed in because of the temperature, the addition of sunlight provided a welcome change. Along with several other ponies who had chosen to stay indoors at the Royal Library in Canterlot, a green Earth Pony stallion left his book at a table and trotted outside to take a study break in the sunlight. He blinked after stepping out, as his blue-grey eyes adjusted for the sun. After a moment he gave a goofy grin, seeing the clear air, and decided to 'make a break' for a small café two blocks away from the library. With spare bits jingling in a bag, he could practically already taste the pleasantly bitter taste of black coffee and smell the pastries that seemed regularly prepared.
The morning was bright and joyful in Canterlot's home for orphans, as a white coated unicorn lined up fillies and colts in rows to take role. The winter weather had kept the little ones inside, so they were eager to get out and venture into Canterlot's streets. One by one she checked off names as they replied back with a simple “Good morning.” up until now all was good, until she got to little Mary’s name. She shook with fear as she called her name and certainly could not be found, So she told the others to stay put, until another leader came to look after them. She put on a light coat, and got out as fast as she could, for she already had an idea were the young filly could be up at this hour.
The green stallion trotted down the road of greyish-white cobblestone, his hooves making a distinct click. That clicking added to the sound of other hooves in the now-crowded street, and along with the sound of mingled voices and the occasional happy shout from a filly or colt made for a vibrant and joyful atmosphere. The cold breeze that intermittently blew through and interrupted the warmth of the sun carried with it the scents of various foods being prepared for lunch-time, and the smell of both sawdust from woodwork and hot steel and iron from forges mingled. Some sort of repairs must be underway, probably from winter's ice and snow damage. As the Earth Pony looked about and neared the café, he paused at the sight of an uncharacteristically frantic-looking Unicorn, who seemed to be calling out in distress. His stomach rumbled and he took another step towards what should have been his snack and coffee, but curiosity tempted him to pause and look on, just in case something serious was ahoof.
Pushing through crowds and listening for young voices panicking for the life of the young filly, the white mare kept looking, her hooves were now coated with mud, as she would look under wagons and in between allies, as well as in toy and candy shops. She kept calling out her name, but at the same time not trying to cause so much of a scene, she would stop to ask strangers if maybe they have scene the light peach and brown maned filly, but no luck.
The stallion looked back and forth between the café and the Unicorn mare, who was clearly panicking. He sighed, gave a slightly annoyed groan under his breath, and made his way towards her. As he drew closer, he waved to try to get her attention. Somepony behind her looked at him, smiled, and waved back, so he smiled in return, then laughed to himself and tried to push through the crowd. Soon enough, he came sidled up to her and attempted to put on an expression of care, to show his sincerity. "Hey, is something wrong, Miss?"
The green stallion nodded, and looked from side to side for a moment, to make sure that he wasn't missing anything close. When he didn't see a filly, he turned back. "Alright, miss... so you know who I am, I'm Celtic Cross. Breathe for a moment... relax. What are her colors?" He looked around again, this time to determine whether there might be any of the Royal Guards on patrol. He scrunched his nose upon not seeing any, and turned back to the Unicorn once more.
The mare out of breath, listened trying to cover her face with her mane, as her eyes filled with tears. “Her name is Mary, her coat color is a light peach, her mane is brow, h-her eyes are brown…” She began to sob, and turn her head left and right trying to see if she might catch a glimpse of her.
She looked back at him, she was still shaken up, but she did as she was told, wiped her tears and took more than one deep breath. “She likes to talk and eat and… and play on the parks swings, and pick flowers, oh how she loves to pick flowers, she also likes being told stories, my little Mary…” she quivers as a small breeze passes by.
By now the mare was exhausted, her head ached, and her legs shaked, she saw the stallion coming towards her, and at first she found it odd, but then she had a thought maybe he had seen little Mary. She stopped in her tracks, to pay close attention to what he was saying, She got the message and nodded in agreement. “Hello, and yes, a little filly around this hight” she shows him her height, with her hoof. “She's out here somewhere, and i can't find her anywhere!” The mares eyes began to water.
Celtic raised a hoof in front of the white mare's face, and tried to make eye contact with her. Nothing productive was going to happen if everypony lost their proverbial marbles, so the first thing he thought should be done is to calm her down. "Hey, hey now... slow down. Take a breath, clear your head, okay?" He took a breath himself, and gave s quick sigh before speaking further. "I find it hard to believe that anypony'd hurt... uhh, Mary. So she ran off someplace... it's only natural with the sun finally out. What are some of her favorite things to do?" He kept his blue-grey eyes fixed on the mare this time, hoping her answer would lead logically to a certain location.
