View MoreIn all his years, Carmine never would have thought it'd come to this. Days ago, he shared an interesting conversation with an old man who dropped a folder into his office like he'd found the dig-site for the Holy Grail. Photos of blurry night-time imagery, of... driftwood? A funky shaped tree protruding from the water? A fat swan? The poor photography skills combined with the clearly ancient camera made it hard to see just exactly what he was supposed to be focusing on. Thankfully, the old man was there to correct him, as well as provide a map to this creature’s supposed dwelling— a half-submerged cave off the coast that connected the oceans and rivers— all based purely on some marine biologist mumbo jumbo couldn’t quite get. Something about the currents, the fish population pointing toward a predator and then like. In short: a monster. A water monster, no less. No hydras or kappas or anything of the like, but a seapony that *wasn't* a seapony. A lady in the water, changed and mutated either by radiation or nature's cruel, warped sense of humor. ...At least, that was what the old man explained. If anyone else were in the room with Gumshoe, they'd clearly see a look of doubt plastered on his whiskers and brow. But... the old man had a hefty sum. One worth scoping out the joint for a couple nights since the old man's front-fee was enough to cover a hotel not too far from that very cave. A couple miles at best. Finding Nimue would rattle the scientific community, my dear boy! Think: a common link between ponies and fish that have gone undiscovered for possibly millennium! If you find proof of her, I can justify sending a team to capture her. Then, we become gods of science!... The memory of the other day played fresh in his mind while he stared into the mouth of the water-home of this supposed "Nimue" with a bucket of fish chum protectively at his side. The fetid stench of minced up fish nearly him puke with each inhale, but he had a strong stomach. He had to in order to stick with some of the more unpleasant aspects of his career. The haunting echo of his footsteps left little ease in his tired mind. Shadows moved to taunt him. Further back, he could see water, likely where this “Nimue” swam. All of this for documentation, to prove he were doing all that was necessary. Much like congratulating Saturn on his soon-to-be stage of fatherhood, searching for "Nimue" was the most lost of causes. At least he could look forward to a shower and bed rest after.

The sun had slowly begun to set, and soon would the day end to be replaced with the night with the moon's rise. View MoreThe sun had slowly begun to set, and soon would the day end to be replaced with the night with the moon's rise. A large black silhouette swam through the many pitch-black tunnels deep under of the half-sunken cave. The only light source came from the bioluminescence emitted from the orange parts of the creature's body and eyes. Left. Right. Down. Curve. Up. Many directions were taken until the arrival to one of many hidden locations the creature had recently discovered. Usually, the creature wouldn't think of visiting the surface, but boredom finally caught up to it after many, many years of solitude. Curiosity overtook its mind, begging to be sated. Thus, for the past couple of months, the anomaly roamed across Equus, eventually finding herself in the seas of Equestria. Of course, it wouldn't know the name of the land. Using the many waterways that either connect to large lakes or oceans, the creature would use them to observe the land dwellers and their civilization secretly, but only during the night to avoid being spotted. The last thing it wanted to was to attract unwanted attention and cause panic. After all, the creature wasn't sure how friendly these ponies were. Its large golden orbs soon found the open clearing that would lead out of the waters and into the cave's cavernous humid room. However, the creature stopped in its tracks and turned its head towards a specific direction. The anomaly saw nothing but the many glowing crystals that lit up the room and some stalagmites hanging on the ceiling. It knows something, or someone was there. The question was, why? There have been none so far to make their way here. How very peculiar. Wondering what to do, the creature decided to take a chance to make its first contact with the land walker. Whoever it was, they would see a large shadow coming from beneath waters as it soon rose its head out. A veil of water would mask the creature's head and neck temporarily. Once the cover of water finished cascading, the beast saw something red standing there— a red pony with also a mane of red. It would stare at the hornless and wingless one momentarily before its nose caught the scent of something familiar. A variety of fish could be smelt, though not very fresh, and it seemed to be coming from the round container they were holding. The beast would tilt its head to the side slightly as it wondered why they had a small container of dead fish. Were they here to fish, or perhaps it was their food? Regardless the creature shifted its attention back to the red one waiting for their reaction.

View MoreFor a good while, the creature would remain unnoticed by Carmine, the one too distracted by his own mild irritance to even notice the fresh set of eyes watching him. Those who believe they aren’t being watch act the most like themselves. No need for masks or façades; it’s not as if the cave will gossip and jeer. The way the red earth pony walked was unnatural. Not like any others who he shared the surface with— no, this stallion walked with a subtle limp originating from his back hind. The right one. Normally he could keep it under control, but the balancing act of keeping the bucket upheld and walking over the rough and seemingly unpredictable terrain did play his toll on a prior injury. This was even more obvious when he tripped and fell over a tiny pocket on the floor, a cavernous pothole that caused him to trip and fall flat on his face just inches away from where the water began to deepen. And where Namielle watched on with her curious gaze. Rather than get up, as most normally would do, Carmine just laid there. Motionless. Defeated even. He felt something squirmy touch his leg and... the bucket. Some of the fish-goop spilled over and painted a Da Vinci of meat on his back hind. Disgusting. A heavy sigh escaped him while he pondered his next move. Should he even move? Either way, it seemed he was content on laying there for a good second. “Stupid doctor and his stupid, stitched up face and his dumb Nimue theory and his idiotic—...” Another sigh. This one served a different function, to calm him down for a clearer head. “Just dump the chum, stick around for five minutes, then say ‘Sorry, Doc. Watched all night and I didn’t see head nor tails of her. Saw a candy bar floatin’ in the water if you...” As he went on his little tirade, his amber eyes looked around the cave and its various systems. The enchanting bioluminescence of the various sea life coupled with the occasional drips of water mirrored back numerous times thanks to the curse of the nymph Echo, all made it seem so relaxing and kind of hidden. The sea monster watching him was just icing on the cake! ... The what? Yes, he initially looked past her at first, but eventually he settled back onto her. From that point on, the world’s most interesting thing could be happening just a few feet beside her, but he wouldn’t dare look away. In fact he couldn’t. He just stood there, frozen in fear like a deer in carriage lights. Clearly from the look on his face, he was preparing to scream.

View MoreIt would seem the pony had not noticed the new presence that had emerged from the depths of the deep blue. Perhaps the red one was too preoccupied in their thoughts to pay heed to the surroundings. Namielle remained unmoving, her eyes fixated on the red male(?) before her. One particular oddity that struck her was the way they seemed to move. It reminded her of something she's witnessed plenty of times. Perhaps they were old, affected by the passing sands of time, or injured by someone or something. The latter she would know. It may be scarce, but there were occasions where she would encounter dangerous dwellers of the deep who could pose a threat. Now even more curious, she would ponder the purpose he had for being in this cavern, especially when the pathway can be rather dangerous if one doesn't watch their foot– He fell. His face-planting on the wet stone floor, just like she imagined might could happen. Instead of trying to get back onto his hooves, he just laid there unmoving. The bucket of churned fish meat also spilled over, covering a portion of his leg. How unfortunate. Two of Namielle's main hair feelers slowly slithered their way from below waters and towards the red pony from the ground. She wanted to provide him some assistance but stopped when she heard him let out a breath of defeat and started talking to himself. The unknown seapony of sorts picked up words about a doctor, Nimue, and chum. Dump chum? What is chum? Is chum the dead gloop of fish he carried? Why would he dump this chum here? Her thoughts were interrupted when the pony started looking around the room, his eyes even passing her a few times. Did the pony still not see her, or did they not care? Namielle did not recall possessing any means of invisibility. Maybe they were just here to dump chum and leave without paying heed to anything else– oh, wait, he's locking eyes onto hers. Jiiii. Stare— the staredown between the unknown monster of the seas VS the chum-covered red stallion. Yes, he finally noticed her, and going by the movement of his facial muscles, something was building up within him. Now, where has she witness such an expression before? It's been such a long time. Fear. Ah, yes, she remembers! It's the expression of fear and horror she received when she visited a nearby village by the sea. Memories of the villagers running away to their houses and brave ax, spear, and spell-wielding warriors stood before her resurfaced from the depths of her mind. What are her options? Namielle knows any second now he would scream and cause a very unwelcome disturbance. The stallion doesn't seem to have noticed the two hair feelers remaining stationary on the ground by him. She could wrap them around his mouth to keep them shut, or perhaps... The beast had another idea. As the stallion would open his mouth to let out a bloodcurdling scream, a third feeler suddenly shot out of the water like a missile with great speed and precision right into his mouth. The tentacle didn't remain there for long, but it did leave a live fish Namielle held onto as a snack for later. Her golden orbs would watch the tail end of the fish wiggle and struggle to escape the stallion's mouthly prison. The beast would then retract her feelers but brought one close to her lips as she shhhhh'ed him. The corners of her mouth would eventually curl upwards some, and she would chuckle in mild amusement.

View More"AAAAAAAA--HNFFF!" Before he could even think of a reaction, there was something writhing and wriggling between his lips. Some poor fish jetted into his mouth, propelled by the flexible hair tendrils of the mysterious one he knew was 'Nimue.' The lady of the lake herself seemed entertained by her own actions, evident by that twisted grin and that shush. Many thoughts ran through the detective's mind. What the hell was she? Why did she plug his mouth-hole with a fish? Why the shush? Is this some sort of ritual she partakes in before she eats them? Is this the same behavior she exhibits on the hunt beneath the ocean? So many questions and so very, very few answers. Eventually, he managed to spit the poor sap out with a heavy thrust of his neck and a quite powerful self-induced gag. Shot right out like a pitching machine, bounced off a rock and plooped straight in the water. Poor guy was probably okay. Probably. There was still the very real threat of the creature in front, if only he could stop coughing and choking. The fish... did not taste good. Not at all. He spent maybe a minute sputtering, trying to kick-start his lungs to re-correct his usual breathing cycle, and put up some kind of form of defense. She was bigger than him, and most likely incredibly strong if she swims all the time. Plus, those feelers... realistically, Carmine didn't stand a chance-- he couldn't even run away unless she was slower on land. This very well may be the end for Carmine Gumshoe. Killed by something that doesn't exist... yet he had one way out: his charm. She laughed and smiled, she looked like a pony so was it a stretch to believe she may be just as intelligent as one, or at least exhibit some level of compassion for one who looks like her? Maybe she'd think he's too pathetic to eat. Or worse, he may be triggering some sort of King Kong scenario if he wasn't careful. While backing away slowly until his rump hit a large rock-growth, Carmine tried to return the smile back. "H-Hey! Hey there, fish... Nimue. Nimue! I-- That's what I know you... uh..." Celestia, what if she wasn't as intelligent as a pony? Perhaps conveying his thoughts into simpler words was key here. "Me, Carmine," said the detective as he pointed at his chest. "Me... Not good for eat. Very not tasty. Years of alcohol abuse. Liver big poison. No eat me."
