It is time.
Gray woke up that morning with a single conviction: The guest room. Despite the size of his house, the actor’s massive mansion had but two bedrooms, the one that Gray used and the spare. Truth be told, he had only been to the spare room once since acquiring the property. After which he decided to lock it under suspicion that there might be an angry poltergeist of a washed-out celebrity that committed suicide there decades ago, and who was now a permanent resident. A character so shady that nobody in all of Manhattan could remember. Legends said that if anybody were to pronounce this entity’s name again, then maybe their spirit could finally rest in peace.
Either way, Gray was half sure that he had completely made up that story in his mind. But now the idea of it was deeply rooted into his subconscious. Finding the keys to that room took all morning. Eventually, the actor stumbled across them inside the downstairs bathroom’s medicine cabinet by accident, as he was looking for a band aid for one of his hooves after he had tried to punch the door down. Now there he was, standing in front of the dreaded door, keys in hoof. Gray takes a deep breath and unlocks the door. It creaks and he’s met with the tiny corridor uniting the main sleeping area and the bathroom connected to it. There were large deep yet discolored blue curtains, shielding the room from the sunlight outside. Only a few stray sunrays creeped through and illuminated the dust floating inside this eerie place which had been locked and removed from the world for months. The actor immerses into this scene, if only for a few seconds, and then flips the light switch on.
The very first thing he did was removing the curtains. He had to bring a ladder to reach the high ceiling but other than that, this step proved to be relatively easy. Those were tossed into the wash machine, as were the sheets and the duvet from the bed. Next came the closet… Inside of it were discarded pieces of old garments from Gray’s theatrical days, and other stage paraphernalia that he was allowed to keep to himself. There were a couple of photo albums, letters and even video tapes. It all went straight to the basement without a second thought.
The cleaning of the room became much more intensive from this point on. Gray used the remainder of the day to deeply clean the bathroom, the floors and the windows, and also to take out the furniture in order to make space for his new roommate’s stuff. Once the room had been completely emptied, he called a medium and an exorcist and had them perform a cleansing, with him actively taking part. They had scented candles, salt circles, incense and even wore fancy robes. The whole thing! And it wasn’t until that was over at around 3:00 am that Gray deemed the place inhabitable again.
As he was about to lock the door again, the actor peeked inside and gazed at his arduous work with awe and pride. Without the sun to illuminate this place in the middle of the night, the actor felt though as if the dark void was staring back at him. His heart skipped a beat and he immediately slammed the door closed. He attributed it to feeling exhausted and decided to get back to the main hall, n-not because he was scared of course! But because he needed a bubble bath and a drink, obviously. Such hard work does things to the mind…
