Below is a letter, found by castle staff while sorting letters to the castle. It sports a wax seal of the Ridgewell family. The age of the letter is unknown.
"Darkness enshrouds the good people of the Ridgewell Estate. Through deceit, and trickery, a great evil has wormed it's way into my estate. It took the form of a prince, using magic so powerful, neither myself, nor my estate mage could detect it. Unable to see through it's ruse, I allowed the evil to take refuge in the one great castle upon the grounds. There, it festered, and corrupted the land around it. By the time we noticed, it was far too late. Only then, did it finally reveal to us, it's true form.
The General of Shadow. A servant of the vile Queen Umbra. I do not know why it has chosen my estate as it's target, but I am to believe it must have the aim of striking at Canterlot. I have done everything within my power to stop the evil, but alas, I have failed.
It cast a spell over the estate. Now, none may leave. Trapped within the grounds, the good people of the estate are now the helpless victims of the shadows that stalk the night. They live each night in fear that the shadows will come for them next. Families huddle together in their homes, praying for deliverance. The evil has trapped me within my own study. Try as I might, I cannot break the seal. I am forced to watch from my manor, as my people are dragged from their homes, and cast into darkness. The evil has ensured I am able to hear the cries of my charges as they plead for my help. Alas, try as I might, the evil's spell is much too strong. I cannot save my charges. I have failed my duties, as lord, and protector.
May the moon have mercy on my people. For the evil does not.
-Lord Amadeus Ridgewell II
I have failed."
