Late and with the fine chill of night just beginning to settle across the city, yet too early to call the day over, too early to retreat into a back room and sleep until the next day comes. A soft fog that diffuses streetlights is becoming a drizzle. It promises real rain, later. The kind that beats on the windows to be let in and stings your skin if you stand in it. Bubblegum doesn't bother to lock the door to her shop as she shuts it. Who would break in to a store that only sells gum? Few enough bother to enter when it's open. The soft click of her hooves on the worn stone of the street is muffled into nothing by the fog and drowned out by the whisper of raindrops. It's the kind of night someone could disappear into without a soul noticing. Bubblegum reaches a front hoof absently towards the bow clipping her mane out of her face, but stops just shy of actually taking it out. No one's around to think she's trying too hard. She hasn't done anything to justify the discomfort she feels. She's just walking to the nearby cafe. She's done this a thousand times or more, now. There's no reason for the unease crawling up her shoulders and prickling in her throat. Wait. This - this is new. An alleyway she doesn't remember. Dark. Darker than the evening of the city, colder, and the rain is building from whispers to the murmur of a crowd. It's starting to bite through her fluffy coat where the fur won't grow, all around the old scars on her back. It's trickling down her sides like icy fingers. Bubblegum turns to leave this strange place, only to find another unfamiliar road behind her, another place she doesn't remember being in the city. She turns her face towards the strange alleyway, then back to the road behind her, and then tilts it back to look at the lone streetlight flickering overhead. None of this is right. She shouldn't have left the shop. Bubblegum reaches up and tugs the ribbon from her mane. Her face is warm in spite of the cold air around her, flushing with nerves that wriggle between her stomach and lungs. What did she do wrong? All of the same steps, the same path, the same destination in mind, the same starting point, and yet somehow she's walked into a place that shouldn't even exist. The rain snaps against the pavement. It feels like laughter. Bubblegum bites the insides of her lips, taking tiny steps until she's pressed her side against the cold metal of the streetlight. Her sensitive ears swivel for the source of a clattering sound in the distance. All she has on her is a coin purse, made to look like a frog, with the opening as its mouth. It made her happy when she bought it, but she feels guilty looking at it now. She tucks it back into the loop of a braid in the underside of her mane. It won't help her situation. But... what will? She can't read the language on the sign that should have told her the name of this street. There isn't a pattern to the symbols. They look like someone tried to replicate the idea of a street name without understanding any written language, or why it would be put on a sign. Bubblegum shivers. The rain has soaked through her fur. Bits of hail strike the stone all around her, bouncing off her coat and landing in her mane just long enough to melt. She gazes around for anything familiar. Anything alive. Her voice fails to cut through the weather when she calls out into a night that should not yet have fallen. #rp
