Most of it only battered i... View MoreClouds cluttered the sky, open wounds weeping into the trees and earth beneath them. Mirror could not remember when last the weather had shifted with such violent intensity. Most of it only battered in fits against the canopy above her, and yet enough rain cut through that it still soaked through her fur and skin, still lashed against her with claws that wanted at her marrow. She pulled a drenched cloak a little tighter around her shoulders as if it might have some secret untapped warmth left to offer. Despite her glass-like mane having plastered itself in thick strands against her, the unicorn sought out no shelter besides the limbs of the trees, curled ineffectually overhead. She dared not risk that the bramble wall in which her gaze was tangled would be enough to conceal her movement if she did. Twice now had her attentively pricked ears caught the sound of her own name spoken by the strangers beyond the barrier. Their porcelain and metal armor, the exact making of which was long enough kept by time to be secret, made too distinctive a sound to let her wonder whence or why they had come. Had any doubt remained, the other name they repeated would at once have banished it. To herself repeat it, even in the supposed privacy of her own mind, felt too much alike to calling the owner closer for comfort. She should not have left her sword in the cottage. The fear of their finding some way through its shell to the innards of the forest, finding some way to reach where she stood frozen, made Mirror's heart beat against her ribs with a painful vengeance. It was worse when she heard them speak again that name she could not bring herself to loathe. That reminded her of the only comfort that had been reliable for most of the years she had lived. Made her miss it. Lightning cracked across the sky as if to warn her away from the memory. Every muscle tensed. Thunder rolled through her bones. Mirror wondered if she could have done something different somewhere along the way. If she could have changed herself at some point. If there was some version of her Faith would still have been in love with. If there could still be some version of her that Faith would love. If it would be easier- better to live in a prison of glass and gold. To be useful. Was there any place for her closer to being loved than that? Closer than being useful? Mirror felt suddenly too fatigued to keep herself standing. She half-fell, half-knelt to the soggy moss beneath her hooves, the sound of voices and rain too distant to hold her attention. Breathing took too much effort to focus on anything else. It was hard to tell whether she was crying, or if the rain was landing on her face more often. Her skin felt like a foreign layer, numb, unattached to her senses. Her legs looked very strange. Far away. Too close. Wrong. She closed her eyes, and pinned back her ears, and breathed in intermittent, ragged bursts. The outside world was too loud, too vast, too much. Inside needed to be quiet enough for her to retreat to until she had another refuge. #rp
