In the day's warm light this would melt into morning dew that glistened. This thin layer of ice crunched very softly under Mirror's hooves as she moved beneath the canopy. Her eyes had only just begun to adjust to the near pitch dark, but she knew her forest and moved through it with confidence. More than the darkness it was the quiet that unsettled her - it never had before bothered her, for she had never before noticed just how big and empty the forest really was. She could hear each breath she drew. She could hear her frantic pulse. She could hear the crunch of frost beneath her hooves. But there was nothing else out there in the oily night, no one waiting for her, and by the time she had reached her clearing, she was well and truly frightened. Still... she did not want to return to her empty cottage. It had so many rooms. The cold stung and nipped at her, but at least that was familiar. At least she was moving, instead of simply lying without purpose on a wooden floor, or on her own bed. Everything in the cottage reminded her of Faith. The clearing did, too, standing here and staring at the spot Faith had once occupied. When she sighed, it coiled out into the night and dissipated. She looked up at the sky through the hole in the cover, and at the stars which lay so very far away, and it made her dizzy, so she looked back down at the ground. Mirror set down the basket she had brought with her beside the crystalline water, and set her cloak in it, too. The icy cold water silently made room for her, sending shocks through her bones. She kept moving until it reached her chest, then her neck, and for just a single moment, she wondered if drowning hurt. Then she closed her eyes, and thought of nothing instead. Nothing, empty space, tiny specks of light that might only be the dying shrieks of distant stars that no longer were, echoing out through the universe... That wasn't better. Mirror opened her eyes again, and stared off at the edge of the clearing. The ache of cold that had clawed deep into her core was beginning to fade as she grew more used to the cold. She took a couple steps until the water only reached her chest again, and there she stood, her expression so vacant that she might have been a lifeless doll. Would it help if she screamed? If she screamed as loud and as long as she could, breaking apart that awful silence? No. She could not scream forever. And when she ran out of breath in her lungs, the silence would return, only worsened by her meaningless attempt to fight it. #rp
