In theory, it should be possible to provide Pegasus and Earth ponies with an implement allowing them to do magic.

I wouldn't encourage it.

"Clear example of science going too far. I'm just saying it would be possible. It probably wouldn't be ethical, and I'm certain ponies would die as a result."

"Uh. Maybe later?"

Emery glares and bluntly responds, "You're interrupting Science, Magic and Cambia."
Adrian Coalhopper
"W-we'll talk later!"
E
Nods their head and responds, "Comrade."

Unicorn Horns. How do they work? There are no stupid answers.

Psionic Energy

"Is that something that can be measured?"

Yes...
Plex Viridian (Project Aurora)
its called IQ
E
"As far as I know, IQ tests don't measure psionic aptitude, but it would be interesting to know if there's a correlation!"
Aveon
I am unsure of how to directly link the Psionic energy to the ponies or how to properly quantify it as well Just that it would typically go in the order of Alicorns-Unicorns-Pegasi-Earth Ponies
Inigo
Unihorse has unique arcane thingy and horn thingy is conduit for unique arcane thingy. It's why mud pony thingy or birb horse thingy can't just make a wand thingy out of unicorn horn. They have their own unique arcane thingy with mud horse thingy good with earth and nature while birb horse thingy ca...View More
E
"That's, uh." Emery pauses. "Accurate. Have you ever wondered why Unicorns have a unique arcane ability? There should be a way to find out."
Inigo
Mud horses and birb horses just have passive magic. Magic that just works the way it works. Unihorses have more control and their arcane abilities is really a blank canvas unlike the other horses that already have their abilities laid out and limited. Other horses could probably find a way to have f...View More

I always felt that the magic didn't come from the Unicorn. The magic energy comes from the world around them. Their horns act as a conduit that allows them to gather and control the magical energy. The stronger the connection the Unicorn has to their surroundings, the more magical energy they can har...View More

"That's an interesting hypothesis, and it would be a groundbreaking discovery to make! However, I have one question. What do you mean by, 'a stronger connection to their surroundings?'"

When Tirek came and decided to rip the magic away from horses, he sucked magic from horses and left them powerless. No magic, no flight, no nothing. He didn't suck magic from the surrendering area. High possibility that horses may have mana pools
Able
I have a pretty long winded answer for that actually, if you'd care to hear it.
Inigo
SURE.
E
"Yes, please."
Maxh Vezpyre
"I heard by my friend purple smart, of my universe of course, that Horns works the same way as wands for other magicians, sounds logical to me, even though I'm only a muscle wizard and can cast kick."
E
"I've only seen wands in sleight of hand tricks. Are you saying that unicorn horns are useless?"
Maxh Vezpyre
"I'm certain you need the horn likely wizards needs their wands, so of course it's not useless, a tool to channel magic through is required for the magician. I can't do magic, I only have these." Flex

psionic emanation in science fiction might be real so that might be how it works

I bet I can make you change your opinion on stupid answers <3
E
"How do you think unicorn horns work?"
Inigo
I guess another example of evidence to unicorns having a mana pool is that when unicorns lifted both the sun and moon, they burned themselves out permanently. They couldn't just gain more arcane stuff from the world around and only got their magic back when Tia and Luna gave them a refill.
E
"I'm not sure what mana is, but it sounds relevant to the CJAT. Do you have some resources for the University to look into?
Maxh Vezpyre
"If you loot a spell book from a monster, you can give it to some Unicorn to eat it, and learn the spell, or press it on their cheeks and say LEARN, and presto, spell learnt."
E
"I've never learned a spell like that before. Big if true."
Prince Artemis
"Unicorn horns work because the Unicorn is born of a couple of parents, whether they, themselves, are Unicorns aren't entirely relevant. Magic would run in the family, as does a flight gene if one parent, or grandparent, had either wings or a horn." Artemis started before coughing slightly, continu...View More

I think we should start with the absolute basics. Levitation. How do you think it works? In theory could non-unicorn / non-alicorn ponies do levitation somehow? Are there limits on the size, and do t...View More

I for one have always believed that unicorn magic has always been possible for the other races; in this case, the reason other ponies aren't normally seen practicing magic in this manner is because of the components of a spell; namely, that most (not all) spells require a spoken incantation, an unco...View More

Since all ponies have gotten accustomed to horned ponies being the only ones capable of firing magical blasts or levitation, it is unlikely that ponykind knows spellcasting is possible for other races. I'm going into theorycrafting for all of this, but I've always imagined that the use of a horn not...View More
E
Hmmm. Maybe starting with levitation is actually a bit too much of a step. It's important to understand the essence of magic. What is magic and why can we perform it in the first place?
Star Catcher
As for limitations, observation has shown that there are two major factors in how strenuous a levitation spell is - the weight of the objects being controlled, and the number of objects that can be levitated at once. Most unicorns are seen carrying one or two objects at most, only in the case of the...View More
E
I agree that weight is probably one of the main limitations. If you see my response below, I implied that weight may could be a factor. In theory if we could go to other planets, we could easily test if it's a function of weight, or whether it's function of mass.
PB
PB: As far as i know of it levitation lifts objects of any size granted that the pony has enough magic or magic capabilities. For example a pencil could be heavy to one when using levitation whereas somepony else could handle up to an ursa minor. Could this be applied to those without a horn? Probab...View More
E
That's a very good point. I'm not very well-versed in anatomy, but it would be interesting to know what anatomical structures allow for magic in horned-creatures.
E
Levitation may be basic and easy to perform, but it raises some interesting questions about properties of the physical universe and the world we live in. I have a hypothesis that there are other life-sustaining worlds similar to ours that have different properties. If levitation requires an actual p...View More
