To her, it just felt like she woke up from a long nap… which, technically she did.... View MoreIt’s been about two weeks since Strawberry had come in to the world of the living once more. She expected… something? To her, it just felt like she woke up from a long nap… which, technically she did. Everything seemed the same, though. The only proof she had that the events during her slumber had even happened were the secondhand accounts of her trusted friends and family. That freak, Psycho Hermes, had spent the entire time trying to track her down for a finisher. A finale. And Trip used her as bait to get him out of hiding… Well, it didn’t matter. He’s dead, she’s alive. That’s all that matters in the end. The store had also been handled in her absence , thank the stars, though she would have to have a word with Trip Wire for changing her song without permission. He may have been wise to undo his booby traps, but he was sloppy when it came to changing his old person music… or, as Berry constantly called it, Butt Rock. The name should need no explanation. Over a month unconscious and two weeks of physical therapy. She still wasn’t at one hundred percent… actually, she was hardly at 60. Sawbones had done her good by giving her… whatever the hell was in those vials. Apparently it’s been speeding up the process. The fact she eas even walking on her own now was nothing short of a medical— and alchemical— miracle. She did find herself taking a few more sit down breaks lately… But for now, she was having a decent day. She was back in her shop. Her domain. Her kingdom, where she’s in charge… it’s a pretty nice way to spend and afternoon; cutting fruit whilst humming and swaying her tail to the ever present, sickly sweet bubblegum J-Pop. Her mind was idle, her cutting methodical… but, she did slip. The knife had cut too deep through one of the mangos, and had accidentally brought the knife’s edge down on her finger. “Ow!” she was quick to exclaim and bring her damaged fingertip to examine it. It wasn’t bad, just a surface level cut that’s stop bleeding, but… but the steel in her skin brought back unpleasant memories of the night she was hospitalized. The night she fully believed to be her last day on planet earth. The pain in her fingertip began to echo and a sharp pain resonated through her whole body. That single, inconsequential droplet of blood may as well have been the pool of blood she was lying in last month. Her chest tightened. Like someone put a belt around her lungs and squeezed it until she popped. “Breathe, Berry… breathe. It’s just a cut… it’s just a cut.” She’s been through worse. She can handle it. While still trying to keep her breathing going, she dropped the mangoes in with the rest of her chopped bounty and turned the blender on. The fruit just… fell to pieces. She never noticed how helpless it was to the sharp blades at the bottom of the glass. The whirring, though, the god awful whirring… was it always so loud? Her eyes closed just a bit too long and she saw herself in the factory again. Tied up, helpless, and heading straight for certain doom. The wound in her finger screamed for her attention once more, which only made the god awful blended louder. She leaned against the counter and tried to visualize herself elsewhere. Literally anywhere but in that factory. A demonic whisper scratched the back of her mind. “Stop!” Berry cried out, and practically leapt on the blender in order to cease its function and the needless onslaught of that poor mango. The scratching continued louder, scraping the sides of her ear. “I’m not helpless! Shut up! God— I thought you’d have choked and **died** by now!” It whispered in her other ear. Berry held herself in some attempt to calm. “I’m not… it was a fluke! It isn’t going to happen again…” even though she recanted the voice’s accusation, she couldn’t have been one hundred percent sure herself. She needed to prove it. But how could she if she was hardly able to move? She can’t run out of her store… hell, she can hardly walk. If the next boss came in, she’d be completely powerless to stop them. “I need out. I need to get out,” she whispered to herself only. Her crutches were near the receiving area, totally out of view from any customers who might judge their barista for being crippled and weak. With quickened, panicked breaths, she tried to quickly hustle her way to her equipment, only to end up tripping one underused leg over the other. She fell flat on her belly with her damned, damaged legs practically tangled in knots… Berry gave up. She tried to drag herself over the tile, but her arms were just as weak as the rest of her. She fought back tears… “I’m not… weak…” she choked out. In the end, the hardest person to convince was herself.

View MoreGray needed clarity; his own stomach was twisting anxiously as he tried to figure out how he should tackle the situation. He had hoped that Berry or Sawbones would catch up to him, that they’d have a better idea on how to act. Alas, as seconds accumulated nobody else made an appearance. Looks like it was up to him to make the call. The only other comparable decision he’d made to this point was back at that alley… He had nearly gotten Valor’s younger brother killed in his impetus to save Carmine. And while the PI was gracious and forgiving of him, who knows what their destiny would’ve been if the brother had actually been harmed. Gray feared a repeat of the event. Most than anything though, he feared Carmine losing himself. He only needed to see part of the gruesome scene to figure out that they couldn’t wait any longer. The actor threw the heavy doors open, grunting a bit as the metal dragged into the concrete. Why were they so heavy…? It’s as if every part of this dream was specially crafted to make the detective’s escape difficult. Only once the doors were opened, Gray could truly witness the deranged scene before him. He brought his hands to cover his muzzle, “…Oh my god…” he whispered in a shaky breath as his eyes, wide as plates, examined the corpse Carmine was dragging behind. Gray’s eyes sparkled tearfully, he inhaled sharply and thrusted himself forward. He knew what to do! Without mediating word with young Carmine, he ran past him to take position by Valor’s scorched body. At first, he had wanted to pick him up, to pick the pace! But… well, the armor was still burning hot. “Nng!” When the actor tried to wrap his arms around the Pegasus’ desecrate figure, he felt the heat and was forced to abandon his course of action. Quickly, he turned his head all around. There had to be another method… Right? How does one drag a molten mass of gold out!? No dice. Gray began to hop on one foot to remove his shoe, then repeated the action for the second one. He placed one on each hand and then tried again. “They’re all waiting upstairs, then everyone can help!” he reassured, but he didn’t know that to be true. Valor’s odds of survival were in negative numbers.

He didn’t precisely have infinite stamina, and it was beginning to run low. He turned to his right rather than continuing forward, instead tracing a circular perimeter just beyond the forestry horizon. The engineer feared running further into the forest and getting lost or running out of energy to dash back towards the center. While he had carefully planned how they’d break Hex’s spirit, he had not anticipated what to do once the first barrier had been broken. He was beginning to gasp for air, and his steps were slowing through no fault of his own, but his muscles which were beginning to cramp. “No, I do know…! Actually…” Trip laughed breathily, “You’ll never fill that void he left, Hex. There was a one in a million chance you’d find someone in the first place.” It…. Hah… it is nothing short of a miracle that you landed that guy—it ain’t going to happen twice!” “…From the bottom of my heart I recommend you to just accept that… Just drop dead, Hex. There’s nothing left for you but your memories, and they’re beginning to grow hazy, aren’t they?” Trip continued to mock and flinch. God, he was really beginning to have to drag himself, his legs were burning. “Bet you can’t even remember his face at this point!” —————— Beads of sweat were beginning to form from Gray’s forehead as they were lowered into the fire, his eyes were stuck to the fire beneath them. He was staring with a certain emptiness to himself, perhaps he was already losing faith, perhaps he was only tired? However, it might’ve been… the actor’s defeat was palpable. At least until Carmine nudged him. …It was enough for Gray to turn his head and face his beloved detective. “…?” Carmine was gazing somewhere into that sky above them, which prompted Gray to tilt his head up too and take a look. Just as Carmine had announced, there was a tear forming right above them. Gray’s eyes peeled wide open again, mouth hanging open with a light gasp. “Ah… it’s like…” he muttered, “Like the door from your nightmare, Carmine!” “It was hazy… I was worried it would distort beyond recognition and disappear.” Gray frowned and bit his lip. “I think this world might be dying… and us with it.” He tried to keep his cool, but now that he had spoken those words loud enough for his own ears to hear himself? It was too much. His lips quivered. He didn’t want to die in a place like this! In typical Gray fashion, he burst into a sea of regretful tears. “Aaaagh! It was all for nothing!!! We’ve spent all this time surviving and it was all for nothing!!!” cried the actor disconsolately.

She was running through the woods while doing no more than growling curses beneath her raggedy, exasperated breaths. He couldn’t have possibly foreseen this, but there was another. Another man who shared in her agony— a soul who loved her and promised her plenty of food. The very same who sent her on this mission, with the promise that they would finally be rid of the pests and retry a quiet life elsewhere. Even now, she spoke his name in the back of her overloaded mind. Blood Bath Sabbath… what will he think of her failure? The world was dying. The hole in the sky kept getting bigger. Now, it was unmistakable that the world was ripping apart at the seams. The Hex with Berry looked up at the sky, and screeched. “NO! NO, WE’RE NOT DONE HERE! NOT YE—” but her frantic desire left her wide open for an attack. Berry delivered possibly the sickest roundhouse of her whole life right in to the bug’s skull, sending her straight in to the ground. The tear became wider, and it spread at a more rapid rate. Berry stood proud, and watched for Hex’s last words. “I… never asked… for forgiveness. Never…” The area around them all became blindingly white. Carmine, Lorne, Lilith, none of them knew what the transition might hold. Everyone in movies talks about a heavenly light, right…? Well, someone passed in to the great beyond. When the brightness was at its peak, all could hear the dying screech of a mare long exhausted. —————— The light faded, and all would wake up in the very position they departed this world in to. Carmine and Gray had been snuggling on the couch, while Dr. Sawbones, the puppeteer and the bubblegum slugger had their own seats they crawled out of. Everyone would’ve woken up groggy, but the effect wouldn’t last long. The phone inside the booth rang. Normally, its purpose was to simply ask those in the booth if they’d like to extend their hour, but when Berry hopped out of her wheelchair to answer it, she’d just get a message from the front desk. “Hello! I am sorry, but there has been an incident. We are asking all guests to vacate the building so as not to crowd emergency services. If you still have some time on your hour, please call our customer service hotline so we can work in a way that benefits you. Thank you for singing with us!” Strawberry looked at the clock… their reserved hour had just ended. Damn. “Hey,” Lorne began, raising his arms in to a stretch. “Is… everyone okay?”

Trip allowed himself to stop running as the sky shattered and the blinding light forced him to shield his face during Hex’s last moments. Was it really right for them to torment her to the very end? It seemed cruel, yet it was completely justified, right? Trip couldn’t have foreseen, not in a million years, that somebody was expecting her to return. To him this was a victimless crime—er… in the sense that Hex had been a pig for slaughter and her death was an unavoidable given. Now as the world shattered around them, he could finally try to catch his breath. To his surprise, there was nothing to catch. Only the sensation of awakening from a deep slumber as he first regained his consciousness in the waking world. His eyebrows furrowed whilst his eyes still were closed, he squinted them open only to be blinded by the booth’s neon lights and the Karaoke’s blue screen. He… he was awake, right? If anything, the heavy burden of his body was real. The stallion pushed himself to sit up and looked around himself… Berry, Carmine, Sawbones, Lorne and Gray… They were all there. Really? Did they just… pass out? Trip turned to the clock curiously whilst the rest of them slowly rose from their own sleep. Gray’s eyes slowly opened next, relieved to find his head still nested against Carmine’s chest. Unfortunately, his cheeks still burned with that bourbon from before. “Where…!?” the actor murmured in disarray, bringing himself up to look all over. Similarly, to Trip, he saw the rest of them awakening too. Carmine right beside him… *HIS* Carmine… the one he knew! No rat people on sight… no… gigantic figures, no shadows…! “Oh, thank god!” the actor exclaimed in relief. Right at that moment, the phone rang. Berry was the one to pick up, leaving the rest to observe and listen attentively. “…Ah, looks like our party ended.” Trip commented after the fact, then turned to Lorne and nodded. He felt fine… if anything he had somewhat of a headache. “I think I’m going to be sick…” Gray complained. Otherwise, he also looked perfectly fine! “…That… That whole thing, what was that!? D-did that really happen!?” Trip arched his eyebrows, “Well, if it did… Berry and I just got rid of someone by the mere power of our minds!” he smirked, searching for his crime fellow! “Now that’s worthy of writing down on our resumes, don’t you think? Hahaha!”

View MoreIndeed, it seemed that all went back to its relative norm. Carmine wrapped his arms around his beloved like the sky might swallow him up again, and break their reunion. Lilith didn’t know much of changeling magic, but she understood the domain of dreams… more or less. “Using her own twisted realm against her,” the doctor mused. “Ingenious. I wonder how close our nightmare’s seams actually were…” Lorne straightened his back. “So, uh… what ended up happening to her?” Berry shrugged in response. “Dunno. Hopefully she won’t be bothering us again, which means we— Trip and I— are one step closer to stopping these freaks for good. Just leaves Blood Bath Sabbath and Crazy Eight himself. Two on two seems pretty fair!” The only one who hadn’t spoke up thus far was none other than Carmine, who finally took his turn to say his own two cents. A simple message that all likely felt: “I wanna go home.” To call it a fun celebration would be giving the evening too much credit. It was a celebration that happened this evening, and not many of the partygoers could say that they were better off for it. After a moments worth of clamor, they all descended back down the stairs where they witnessed the scene that the telephone had warned them about. EMTs had just covered the source of the alarm and wheeled them out on a gurney, but a bump over the threshold forced the patient’s hand to fall from her side and through the white cloth. Chitinous exoskeleton, with a red fuzzy ring around the joint where the hand meets the wrist. Heart attack, she heard some gossipers say. No one among them was aware that their coworker was a changeling. Berry simply whistled nonchalantly and moved on. None would have any issues getting home, nor would they encounter any blockades that would interrupt their sleep. Berry gave Trip her couch for the night, along with a blanket and the promise for some breakfast sandwiches the following morning. Carmine didn’t let go of Gray the entire time, all the way up until they were in bed. While he missed Valor greatly, and he’d do anything within his power to bring him back… he looked at Gray’s peaceful, snoozing face and felt his heart skip every other beat. Could he really say that he’d trade this moment for anything in the world…? —————— Lilith had just finished rinsing the night’s ick off of her body. Clothed in only a towel, the doctor wrung her hazel curtain dry, and flung it over her shoulder. Everyone else may be relaxed, but Lilith knew more than to let her guard down… especially now that her secret was out there. Sure… if she had to pick a handful of losers to understand her predicament, she was thankful that it was among her favored idiots. That didn’t make the anxiety go away. The doctor breathed a sigh whilst staring into her mask— her bird-shaped prison that she’d let sit on the toilet’s lid. “I feel I’ve earned some ice cream,” Lilith spoke aloud. A habit she’s picked up from lonely, lonely nights. It seems the entire cast shares similar guilty pleasures. With a forced smile, she abandoned her towel to change in to her night gown and reached for a tub she’s been saving for a night such as this… well, not exactly like this, but a rough one. Just as she took the first spoonful, she heard something beat against the door. It wasn’t a knock, but it was like something had simply fallen. After tonight, though, she wasn’t taking any chances. She reached for her nearest weapon: a collapsible baton she had taped beneath the kitchen counter, and swung the device in order to fully prime it. The doctor crept very, very carefully toward the peephole in her front door, but… what was she looking at? It took her a moment to discern an eyeball— someone’s whole face was pressed up against the door. But why? “I’m not seeking visitors. Go away,” she called back. The eye in the peephole did not speak… they didn’t even blink. “Please…!” A voice cried out on the other side of the door. “Please, I’m hurt… you’re a doctor! I— we live in the same building! Doctor, help, a madman’s after me!” Of course, she was posed with a big moral dilemma. As a survivor, she wanted to leave him, but as a doctor, she had no choice but to let him in. No more deaths on her conscience, she declared. She breathed a shaky sigh and began to unbolt the latches, the chains and locks, and as soon as she did, the door swung open and knocked her back on her ass. What stood in the frame was not the injured stallion, but a tall, tall muscular man in a metal mask that held a severed head in his right hand at the peephole’s level. The corpse had went well past its usefulness, and was discarded like it was nothing but trash. “Damn…” the large man seethed. “Haha… I really didn’t think that’d actually work.” The police were called when they heard Lilith’s shrill scream, but by the time they got there, the apartment was empty. The only thing hint they had was the same calling card that’s confused authorities since it’s incursion. A single message written in smeared blood whose origins remain a mystery: Bloody Sunday
