To her, it just felt like she woke up from a long nap… which, technically she did.... View MoreIt’s been about two weeks since Strawberry had come in to the world of the living once more. She expected… something? To her, it just felt like she woke up from a long nap… which, technically she did. Everything seemed the same, though. The only proof she had that the events during her slumber had even happened were the secondhand accounts of her trusted friends and family. That freak, Psycho Hermes, had spent the entire time trying to track her down for a finisher. A finale. And Trip used her as bait to get him out of hiding… Well, it didn’t matter. He’s dead, she’s alive. That’s all that matters in the end. The store had also been handled in her absence , thank the stars, though she would have to have a word with Trip Wire for changing her song without permission. He may have been wise to undo his booby traps, but he was sloppy when it came to changing his old person music… or, as Berry constantly called it, Butt Rock. The name should need no explanation. Over a month unconscious and two weeks of physical therapy. She still wasn’t at one hundred percent… actually, she was hardly at 60. Sawbones had done her good by giving her… whatever the hell was in those vials. Apparently it’s been speeding up the process. The fact she eas even walking on her own now was nothing short of a medical— and alchemical— miracle. She did find herself taking a few more sit down breaks lately… But for now, she was having a decent day. She was back in her shop. Her domain. Her kingdom, where she’s in charge… it’s a pretty nice way to spend and afternoon; cutting fruit whilst humming and swaying her tail to the ever present, sickly sweet bubblegum J-Pop. Her mind was idle, her cutting methodical… but, she did slip. The knife had cut too deep through one of the mangos, and had accidentally brought the knife’s edge down on her finger. “Ow!” she was quick to exclaim and bring her damaged fingertip to examine it. It wasn’t bad, just a surface level cut that’s stop bleeding, but… but the steel in her skin brought back unpleasant memories of the night she was hospitalized. The night she fully believed to be her last day on planet earth. The pain in her fingertip began to echo and a sharp pain resonated through her whole body. That single, inconsequential droplet of blood may as well have been the pool of blood she was lying in last month. Her chest tightened. Like someone put a belt around her lungs and squeezed it until she popped. “Breathe, Berry… breathe. It’s just a cut… it’s just a cut.” She’s been through worse. She can handle it. While still trying to keep her breathing going, she dropped the mangoes in with the rest of her chopped bounty and turned the blender on. The fruit just… fell to pieces. She never noticed how helpless it was to the sharp blades at the bottom of the glass. The whirring, though, the god awful whirring… was it always so loud? Her eyes closed just a bit too long and she saw herself in the factory again. Tied up, helpless, and heading straight for certain doom. The wound in her finger screamed for her attention once more, which only made the god awful blended louder. She leaned against the counter and tried to visualize herself elsewhere. Literally anywhere but in that factory. A demonic whisper scratched the back of her mind. “Stop!” Berry cried out, and practically leapt on the blender in order to cease its function and the needless onslaught of that poor mango. The scratching continued louder, scraping the sides of her ear. “I’m not helpless! Shut up! God— I thought you’d have choked and **died** by now!” It whispered in her other ear. Berry held herself in some attempt to calm. “I’m not… it was a fluke! It isn’t going to happen again…” even though she recanted the voice’s accusation, she couldn’t have been one hundred percent sure herself. She needed to prove it. But how could she if she was hardly able to move? She can’t run out of her store… hell, she can hardly walk. If the next boss came in, she’d be completely powerless to stop them. “I need out. I need to get out,” she whispered to herself only. Her crutches were near the receiving area, totally out of view from any customers who might judge their barista for being crippled and weak. With quickened, panicked breaths, she tried to quickly hustle her way to her equipment, only to end up tripping one underused leg over the other. She fell flat on her belly with her damned, damaged legs practically tangled in knots… Berry gave up. She tried to drag herself over the tile, but her arms were just as weak as the rest of her. She fought back tears… “I’m not… weak…” she choked out. In the end, the hardest person to convince was herself.

He might have celebrated too early though, because God… even Berry’s cheesy pop song couldn’t muffle away the loud thumping of her mother’s steps. Trip turned around, instantly adopting a ‘fight or flight’ stance. What was it!? Where was it!? How big was it…!? The mechanic didn’t have to search for the beast for long, because it was hard to miss! Its gigantic structure breaking in right through the rink’s front door. Trip’s face paled at the sight “Ah, shiiiiiit…!” The very first thought that ran through his head…? He shouldn’t have assigned Gray to deal with her! His eyes quickly searched the other corner to find Gray, Lorne and the two berries still stuck in place. Though they were beginning to scramble to their feet. Trip then quickly looked back at the boombox machine. While it was fixed for now, he didn’t truly know if it’d remain like that. Should he wait by??? ------------------- Gray’s ears dropped at the sight of Berry’s mother. “T-that ain’t Mrs. Sakura…!” the panicked actor stuttered and pointed. “Berry what the hell!? Is that really how you see your mom!? Have you even met her!?” The real Sakura was so… so physically different! I mean, Gray thought he might keep her distracted with a chat or something—he didn’t expect a gigantic sumo wrestled with horns to show up! But there wasn’t much time for him to complain…! The monster had its sights on Berry and Gray couldn’t let them be targeted. The actor quickly jumped to the front of Lorne and both Berries, he began to wave his arms around. “Hey! Mom! Mom look!” Shit… what should he do to get her attention!? Mrs. Sakura was all about prudence, wasn’t she…? Well, Gray only knew a thing or two about prude parents… The actor took one deep breath, ‘this is for Berry’ he thought to himself as he proceeded to take his top off. “Look mom! No shirt!!!” He threw his arms in the air and began to do a little hip dance. Trip was observing with his jaw dropped. “Good Lord…” he smeared his palm against his face and grunted from the secondhand embarrassment Gray was dishing out.

Gray was close behind, he saw the signal and slowed down until he had completely stopped running too. The landscape before them was a distortion but it appeared to take shape once they focused more on their surroundings. Almost like it was manifesting itself around them as they advanced through the nightmare. “Where---” Gray tried to speak, only for Trip to shush him. This elicited a grunt out the frustrated actor, who was quickly tiring of having Trip as some sort of leader of the pack. Not that the other was aware, and even if he were, he was unlikely to care. Trip’s ears shifted backwards as Berry’s voice echoed from behind the group. He was the first one to turn around. “There.” Gray gasped, “Berry!? Oh, thank God! For a second there I thought--- wait… where’s the other one? Just… one Berry?” he frowned in confusion. Trip rolled his eyes. “This is our Berry. There is no other one.” He clarified even though he had assumed that it was a very easy assumption to make. Gray once again squinted his eyes at him and snorted, “I wasn’t asking you.” Those two could argue for eternity, but Gray wasn’t interested. They all had made it out in one piece, even Berry! That was all he cared about… Now there was much bigger matter pressing for attention. Trip was completely lost. He only knew the characters in this novel on a superficial level, this could’ve been anybody’s fever dream for all he knew and cared. …But Gray? Oh, he did recognize where they were. And he didn’t take long to inform the others. “…Wait, I’ve been here before. I’m sure.” The actor pointed out, he lifted a finger and signaled the path towards the opened door. “This place reminds me of Sawbones’ apartment. It had the same yellow lights… and those trees… and the street sign…” “…Dr. Sawbones’?” Trip inquired, arching his eyebrows curiously. “…You’ve been to her place?” “…Once.” Gray briefly explained and frowned. They all quickly grew quiet as the voices started. Gray’s eyes shifted between those few illuminated windows and remembered so many details about Sawbones’ home… How she kept everything locked at all times… how she kept an assortment of makeshift weapons all over the place. But in this dream? The door was ajar. “Something happened to her, maybe this has something to do with it?” the actor proposed. “…What happened?” Trip questioned. “Well, I don’t know. I’m only guessing. She has some weird habits and… Well, I don’t think that they’re normal. As in… something must have happened to her.” Gray didn’t really know how else to explain what was in his mind, he simply shrugged his shoulders. “We should see what’s going on in there.”

View MoreGray maintained rhythm with Carmine, he couldn’t afford going too far from him just to have him trip at the last second. If either of them fell, they were falling together and getting up together! At least that’s the heroic version of the story the actor had made up in his head. Everyone else was out, so it was just them! The walls began to crumble way faster than Gray thought they would. Unlike Carmine, he didn’t know exactly when nor what would be happening next. He couldn’t tell that it was more violent, nor that it was happening quicker than before. All he knew was that Carmine had survived the very same explosion plenty of times, and that he always made it to the door. “We’ll make it!!!” They weren’t there yet, so he assumed they’d have those extra seconds. He was wrong. Carmine’s scream was the only warning he had before he was tackled to the ground. “PUAH!” Gray couldn’t tell just what had happened. From one moment to another he was belly up on the concrete, crushed beneath young Carmine’s armor. The metal pressed to his face, to his ribs… Both of his legs and arms were squeezed beneath Carmine’s body, leaving no part exposed to the falling debris. His head still spun from the impact, he couldn’t see due to the cloud of dust and smoke. Breathing it only caused for him to break into a coughing fit. But he knew he had heard Carmine cry above him. Blindly, Gray began to feel around with his arms and to push away rock and dust that had accumulated on top of them. The heat was sucked back into the factory… At any moment he knew that Carmine would be taken back inside as well. Except… “…Carmine?” Gray called nervously when his weight didn’t lift from him. Hands searching Carmine’s form frantically. No, no, no… this was wrong! All wrong! Why wasn’t Carmine taken back!? Did they mess it up!? Did *he* mess things up!? “Carmine!? …Help!” Gray cried to the rest of them, beginning to enter a state of panic. “Carmine’s hurt!”

Lilith didn’t know much of changeling magic, but she understood the domain of dreams… more or less. “Using her own twisted realm against her,” the doctor mused. “Ingenious. I wonder how close our nightmare’s seams actually were…” Lorne straightened his back. “So, uh… what ended up happening to her?” Berry shrugged in response. “Dunno. Hopefully she won’t be bothering us again, which means we— Trip and I— are one step closer to stopping these freaks for good. Just leaves Blood Bath Sabbath and Crazy Eight himself. Two on two seems pretty fair!” The only one who hadn’t spoke up thus far was none other than Carmine, who finally took his turn to say his own two cents. A simple message that all likely felt: “I wanna go home.” To call it a fun celebration would be giving the evening too much credit. It was a celebration that happened this evening, and not many of the partygoers could say that they were better off for it. After a moments worth of clamor, they all descended back down the stairs where they witnessed the scene that the telephone had warned them about. EMTs had just covered the source of the alarm and wheeled them out on a gurney, but a bump over the threshold forced the patient’s hand to fall from her side and through the white cloth. Chitinous exoskeleton, with a red fuzzy ring around the joint where the hand meets the wrist. Heart attack, she heard some gossipers say. No one among them was aware that their coworker was a changeling. Berry simply whistled nonchalantly and moved on. None would have any issues getting home, nor would they encounter any blockades that would interrupt their sleep. Berry gave Trip her couch for the night, along with a blanket and the promise for some breakfast sandwiches the following morning. Carmine didn’t let go of Gray the entire time, all the way up until they were in bed. While he missed Valor greatly, and he’d do anything within his power to bring him back… he looked at Gray’s peaceful, snoozing face and felt his heart skip every other beat. Could he really say that he’d trade this moment for anything in the world…? —————— Lilith had just finished rinsing the night’s ick off of her body. Clothed in only a towel, the doctor wrung her hazel curtain dry, and flung it over her shoulder. Everyone else may be relaxed, but Lilith knew more than to let her guard down… especially now that her secret was out there. Sure… if she had to pick a handful of losers to understand her predicament, she was thankful that it was among her favored idiots. That didn’t make the anxiety go away. The doctor breathed a sigh whilst staring into her mask— her bird-shaped prison that she’d let sit on the toilet’s lid. “I feel I’ve earned some ice cream,” Lilith spoke aloud. A habit she’s picked up from lonely, lonely nights. It seems the entire cast shares similar guilty pleasures. With a forced smile, she abandoned her towel to change in to her night gown and reached for a tub she’s been saving for a night such as this… well, not exactly like this, but a rough one. Just as she took the first spoonful, she heard something beat against the door. It wasn’t a knock, but it was like something had simply fallen. After tonight, though, she wasn’t taking any chances. She reached for her nearest weapon: a collapsible baton she had taped beneath the kitchen counter, and swung the device in order to fully prime it. The doctor crept very, very carefully toward the peephole in her front door, but… what was she looking at? It took her a moment to discern an eyeball— someone’s whole face was pressed up against the door. But why? “I’m not seeking visitors. Go away,” she called back. The eye in the peephole did not speak… they didn’t even blink. “Please…!” A voice cried out on the other side of the door. “Please, I’m hurt… you’re a doctor! I— we live in the same building! Doctor, help, a madman’s after me!” Of course, she was posed with a big moral dilemma. As a survivor, she wanted to leave him, but as a doctor, she had no choice but to let him in. No more deaths on her conscience, she declared. She breathed a shaky sigh and began to unbolt the latches, the chains and locks, and as soon as she did, the door swung open and knocked her back on her ass. What stood in the frame was not the injured stallion, but a tall, tall muscular man in a metal mask that held a severed head in his right hand at the peephole’s level. The corpse had went well past its usefulness, and was discarded like it was nothing but trash. “Damn…” the large man seethed. “Haha… I really didn’t think that’d actually work.” The police were called when they heard Lilith’s shrill scream, but by the time they got there, the apartment was empty. The only thing hint they had was the same calling card that’s confused authorities since it’s incursion. A single message written in smeared blood whose origins remain a mystery: Bloody Sunday
