As the day fell into night, a certain someone reached to turn on her lamp, only to find... it was dead. She'd have to make that trip to the store she'd been dreading if she was to make any headway on this case. So, resolutely, she tugged on her coat and cast one more glance at the cork-boards she'd been using to organize her thoughts, and- Oh. Her blood ran cold. She turned on her heel and bolted for the door, hardly able to unfasten her locks quick enough. The door shut hard behind her, she turned the key, tugged it out, and began a speedy walk into town. If she could just get to somewhere public, somewhere with lots of ponies.. The air felt thick in her lungs, like heavy paws of a big cat reaching for her, tugging her back, and she wished to break into a run and not stop until she got to the tavern she frequented. No. That would be stupid. Beyond stupid. If she kept her head down and moved swiftly, she would be okay. After all, he only targeted ponies in their own homes. Never in public, not unless it was a shadowed nook where the body would lie for days undiscovered, long enough for him to create his gruesome scenes.. Under no circumstances would she be put in one of those scenes. As she turned the corner and opened the tavern door, a wave of relief flooded over her. She tipped her head to the bartender and slid into her usual seat in a booth at the corner of the building. Moments later, a drink was placed in front of her. When the place wasn't so busy, the bartender might've sat down and they would have a conversation, chat about the daily goings on, but not today. There were dozens of ponies here. It was perfect. Silently, she scanned the room, picking out details of other patrons. Took a sip of her drink. She was safe. She had to be. Maybe she should have contacted an acquaintance, asked them to meet her here.. but she hadn't. So if she disappeared that night? No-pony would notice for at least a couple weeks. Maybe even months, given how much she tended to stay in and work cases. The cork-boards seemed to appear behind her eyelids with each blink, those photos and notes connected by red, yellow, and blue strings.. Evening Primrose sighed and sipped her drink. The sun sank below the horizon. It was quiet.
