I love the season. The weather is perfect, the trees are pretty, it hosts my birthday and all my favorite holidays. But every square inch of my property is covered by trees. The amount of leaves I have to clean up is insane. I get up every single leaf, make everything neat and tidy, spending hours on the process. Only for the yard to be even worse the next day and I have to do it all over again until every leaf has fallen. What gets me to leave things be - to choose my battles, if you will - is the realization that perfect is fundamentally flawed. It's nebulous at best, and only exists in your head. Yours. Not mine, not your parents or your teachers, not Joe the plumber or even the world leaders. Perfection exists only in your head because what you consider to be perfect is solely based on your perception and experience. The mouse for my computer is perfectly sat on my desk. 9 out of 10 people would disagree, however. Why? I'm left-handed. Where I like my mouse would annoy most other people. It's not even perfect for me because it's designed to fit in my right hand. It bothers me sometimes. So perfection is a lie, right? Nope! Next, you have to realize that adequacy is perfection. When you work on something, the point at which it becomes good enough for service without causing any major issue is perfection. Joe the plumber is soldering copper pipe for the water lines in a new development house. The welds aren't particularly pretty as he has a tendency to use too much paste and solder wire. But he is certain that his every joint weld will not leak water into the walls and the couplings are strong. It's perfectly servicable. The way I have found to be content with mediocrity is... complicated. I could probably write a book with every facet of it. But to condense it as best as I can in a way I think you'd most easily digest; learning to pick your battles is key and determining if going beyond adequate will ultimately matter is rule number one. I find that attaining perfection is only best when I'm trying to impress someone or if the extra effort will make my life easier. Keeping a perfectly organized closet or fridge is nice because, for a week, I will know exactly where everything is and it only takes me a second to grab it, and doing the prep work for both only takes a few extra minutes. I hang my pictures with a level because crooked pictures are generally universally irritating. But I don't rake my lawn anymore, I just mow it. Mowers are effectively just vacuums for your yard and it mulches what it picks up, too. It's also faster than a rake. Won't pick up everything, but it does an adequate job. Eventually, the leaves will stop falling. Eventually, the last one gets picked up by the mower. I only have so many hours in a day, and I don't want to spend half of them on something that I only ever look at when I'm leaving for work or just get home. It doesn't affect me to have a perfect lawn. I just prefer to be able to see it. Does it benefit me or anyone else to go beyond adequate? That's the question I ask myself constantly now. It's actually kind of annoying, but it does occasionally save me some time and trouble. It works for me, though. Could work for you, maybe. Compromise looks different for everyone, so just experiment. Find out what's good enough and go from there. You'll find your happy middle-ground.
