Inside, however, light comes from bulbs strewn a... View MoreNight begins to fall outside. Stars come back into view in the dying sun, and the moon shares a shadow of the sun's light. Frogs come out, one by one. Inside, however, light comes from bulbs strewn across the ceiling. While this may be much less awe-inspiring than the night sky, certainly it seemed enough for the patrons. Each and every eye in the tavern was focused on a strange little creature in a red cloak, a small frog nestled into their mane and a gleam in their eyes. "And it was then, as I plummeted down the side of that cliff, that I spotted the crescent holes in each leaf of a striped tree. With both hooves lashed together around the artifact, my only option was to twist about and hook my tail around a root..." And they lowered their voice, leaning a little closer to the crowd. Fluffy tail swaying to and fro, they paused, letting the room fall into an uneasy hush. "I missed. Suddenly the root was above me, and I was still falling, about to crash into the rocks below and bite it. No solution stuck out, nor did any other branches to catch onto." A gasp rose up from the audience. Bee, for that was their name, gave a wolfish grin. To and fro went the tail, and then it was curled into the air and still. Another moment of silence passed as if the tavern had become a graveyard. "It was just then that Scuff climbed from my bag, carrying my lasso. This was my last shot to make it out alive - I threw it as hard as I could, 𝒶𝓃𝒹 𝒾𝓉 𝒸𝒶𝓊𝑔𝒽𝓉. So there I was, hooves tied, holding the rope with only my teeth." "Scuff hid in my hood for safety as I pushed against the air with my tail to gather momentum," Bee's tail swished to one side and then the other in a demonstration as they spoke, "and now I was dangling from a swinging rope. I crashed against the cliff side and caught a hoof-hold with my front hooves, still tied around the artifact, and ever so slowly.. I began to climb." By now, even the bartender was leaning forward to the counter on which this odd creature stood. "I was getting close to the tree, and then I saw the first of the dreaded blissing beetles, the very ones I was here to capture. Scuff pulled the folds of my hood over his ears. Every painstaking centimeter brought me closer to those things. Although I had already plugged my ears, I was painfully aware that at any moment, it might become apparent that somehow that wouldn't be enough. A single gap could spell death for both of us." Bee looked down with wide eyes, their voice growing quiet and serious once again. "Even one blissing beetle is enough to kill a full grown stallion. They are said to create a song so beautiful and deadly that their victims are found dead with a smile on their face." One pony actually gasped at that. Murmurs rippled through the crowd, but a hush came over them once more when Bee's mouth opened to speak again. "Finally, I was close enough to wrap my tail about the branch and release my hold on the rope. I removed the lid of the artifact as a small swarm of the beetles gathered, and carefully- very carefully- I swung the artifact through them and shut the lid tight as quick as a flash. I would have to hope I'd caught some." "It took three hours to climb down the cliff-side with my hooves tied like that. Any longer, and I would have been late on my delivery!" Nervous laughter rippled through the crowd. Some shouted questions while others asked for another story, but Bee just laughed and hopped off the counter. "I'd better have some tea before I tell any more stories. Black tea if you have it, please," they glanced at the bartender and offered a dazzling smile. The little frog clambered down to their satchel only to return with a small bag of bits. "And a round of drinks for all these lovely folks, if you don't mind." Bee winked back at the audience and received a loud cheer in return. For journeying to an unknown town to deliver blissing beetles to an unknown buyer, the short adventurer thought this had gone over quite well. #rp
