View MoreCrushed thoroughly, the leaves are set into another glass container, this one a little more odd in shape and connected by tubes to other chambers of glass and crystal in a metal stand. Mirror murmurs a few words, and a little flame leaps up beneath the glass holding the leaves. Distillation, apparently. Mirror startles like she might jump out of her skin at the physical contact. It takes her a moment to process the interaction, then another to actually return to her process - this time, she cleans her hooves and reapplies the protective paste to them, apparently not wanting to mix the plant she had just been touching with whatever next ingredient she's using. Odd, given that she intends on creating a single mixture, but she seems to know what she's doing. "The forest was not always as it is now." Her voice softens slightly, suggesting that she is slightly touched by his statements. Or affected by the memory of what once had been. It's... hard to tell. She does not wear emotion quite correctly. "It means well, though it is ignorant to suffering which does not bleed or rot. What is tiring to those who dwell here is kindness, safety, to the trees. At least until they realize their survival is anathema to preservation." She... doesn't know what else to say. The kindness of strangers is unfamiliar. Silent again, she runs a hoof over the surface of a wide pan of grey-green plant matter. The water beneath it ripples, but when her hoof comes away with a coating of the plant, the remaining layer rearranges as if it had never been disturbed. Onto the underside of a strip of fuzzy bark it goes. A soft, dangerous glow lights up the contact points, a sickly sort of violet. Mirror quickly opens a container, removes something that looks suspiciously like preserved meat, and presses the glowing bark to the soft piece of... something. The flame beneath the glass container has brought the silvery blood of the plant to a high enough temperature now to steam, slowly wafting up into the chamber above.

Spirit's answer gave her that sense, adding a layer of quiet sadness to her exhaustion. She'd meant to reassure her... but the words she'd spoken? They were ones she might have found reassuring when she'd taken on more than she could bear to protect Faith. She knew not how to shift them to reassure another, nor what exactly had been disquieting in them, what damage to mend. Staying silent felt safer. It was too comfortable to stay like this. ... Was that why the forest had let Spirit in? To placate her awhile longer, lure her back into the safety it thought could be found sleeping in its heart? A little flicker of anger at the thought sparked inside her, that the forest itself might imprison an innocent woman with a life to live outside of it - that it thought Mirror would not object. The feeling struggled to sustain itself while she remained tucked against the other unicorn, empty promises of peace and calm murmured into her ears if she would only stop trying so hard to slog through thoughts. She should have noticed the effect it was having on her companion. It was something else that jolted her into the realization that her head had nodded and her eyes had closed: a streak of falling feathers in the sky, a bird that had crossed over the trees and been snared for it. The soft rustle as it crashed into leaves somewhere. Mirror raised her head by fractions of a degree, not yet willing to pull away from Spirit, but with a spike of adrenaline enough for her to remember the danger of comfort. She tried to figure out where the bird would have landed. It had looked like a dove. She wanted it to have been anything else. But she also wanted to linger where she was - it seemed rare that what was wanted and what was reasonable deigned to overlap. "Time passes wrong if you sleep here," she tried to say, and hoped she had done so aloud. It couldn't have been much more than a whisper. "It is unsafe for you-" Mirror hesitated, and then corrected herself, "-us to stay outside. Easier to stay awake where the trees can't reach."
