Not knowing her tolerances, she thought it better to let Camille have a little free reign. Once she's reached her bounds she's sure Camille will have some sort of tell. Foals her age all do. Camille talked a big game. Tree jumping, high flying, adventuring... An uncharacteristic break. After half a second of silence Seafoam went ahead to remove her wing from the filly's head, scarcely hiding a knowing frown. She didn't need Camille to finish that thought to know what it all meant. Heck, she didn't need to know who this 'Alex' character was either. No doubt a stallion capable of wrangling Rosa -- who believed herself not attracted to stallions mind you -- was a dangerous, lethal pony as well. Thinking back to Rosa's departure, she clearly worried about this stallion of her's. Would the proud old mare worry about your average stallion living their average routines? Rosa did not fret over small details like shopping lists, social gossip, rude strangers or 'being away with your friends all night'. Huntresses fret over security, being followed, other ponies taking fights they couldn't handle, losing parts of their souls... Even more telling, Rosa displayed a nervous tick. Flapping her wings, not as though a flight pre-check, nor any aching muscles... Pegasi are known for emoting through their wings, more versatile than hooves for conveying their thoughts. Your average pegasi could flap to display everything from irritation to joy, but powerful pegasi like the Huntress' feel pressure to keep their wings in check, just as bodybuilders restrain their steely forelegs. It takes a deeper trigger to make their wings stir. Rosa felt such a trigger when speaking of Alex... Lastly, there was a certain cadence to her wingbeat. Agitation. Likely a repeated infraction. What pony would dare to agitate Rosa unless they saw themselves as equal? Equally capable of taking risks, of being stubborn. Equally dangerous. Which brought Seafoam back to the present. Camille a little lost in her sentence. Seafoam guessed it as a memory being repeated... And likely, some instruction on how to cope with it. She must be reciting the entire thing in her young mind. As quickly as their reveries started, Camille broke them by piping up again. It felt like time resuming over the pair. Seafoam didn't have much more time to think before she'd have to respond to the filly and her requests. That frown held while she spoke. "Your 'mousey song'?" She winced with an effort to stand upright, which at least removed the frown from her muzzle. Though she may not have realized the expression were there at all...

Many descriptors could be said of Seafoam, but a weak constitution was not one of them. Cultivated by a proud species, the old warrior's mind could withstand magic manipulation, physical ailments, emotinal stressors, among many other things. Thus it was with great pain that Seafoam endured a self-inflicted hunger fast, to find her limits as a reborn vampire. Immense was her suffering, for her mind is sharp enough to comprehend her pain, even in such an agonizing state. Sol hung in the sky at the 3 o'clock position, but Seafoam cared not to tell. Her shadow held no meaning to her, nor did anything else her eyes might see. Lost of the strength to hold her eyes open, they gracefully closed until all The Huntress could see was void. Her physical pain distressed her more now, but there was no changing her hunger at this stage. She cold only bear through the pain. Eventually her eyes opened to the most unbelievable sight. A grey-furred thestral now sat beside her. 'Nopony comes to this hill.' Seafoam could barely hear her internal voice. She felt so tiny against the desert of destitution she had to endure. Performing internal thought was too exhausting, Seafoam will just let instinct inform her actions now. So all she did was study the grey bat pony, the fog of her vision slowly clearing to let her see more of the mare's details. Now she could finally discern the color of her mane: pink and uncurled, waving gently in the breeze. The sight of pink against the clouds in the sky almost tricked Seafoam into believing dusk was around the corner, and her seventh day of suffering could end. After deciding the mare did not mean sunset was approaching, Seafoam's mind finally decided to figure out who this pony might be. Looking at her red irises and slit black pupils finally unlocked recognition in The Huntress. It was Rosa Cavalier. No, this didn't make any sense. The last time she saw Rosa was over a year ago, when the duty of Huntress became hers to bear. A year was much too short to be allowed to see her again... 'It's uh... She's... This is a...' Hallucination was far to big a word to think of now. And this made more sense than seeing the real mare. Rosa didn't care that much about Seafoam to see her in a state like this. Believing there to be no point in communicating with it, Seafoam gazed silently upon Rosa, also believing the mare would disappear after awhile. In fact they held eye contact for an unmeasured amount of time before Seafoam finally relented. "Rosa." Her dry, aching throat managed to croak. "Seafoam." Her mentor replied. Her voice was kinder, and warmer than Seafoam last knew. It must be the light-headedness. "It's-- n-not as bad as it looks."

Being a projection of her own mind, how could it? "You are so fragile, my dear." Fragile? Her? The accusation made Seafoam pay closer attention... What did Rosa mean by that? Just another vague insult to get a ruse out of her? "Where is your strength? Has it abandoned you at this hour? How is The Huntress, protector of this world, supposed to fight in this state?" "Mmph. I could-- I could get up when I want to." Speaking taxed heavily, her dry throat giving way to embarrassing bouts of choking coughs. Rosa was shaking her head once her eyes opened again. "You don't know that. You only know how to lay on this hill until Luna offers her strength. Her moon will shine full this night, are you dumb to how it will trigger your Blood Rage?" And Rosa might actually be right. What if the full moon's influence was enough to allow the darker vampiric instincts through? She'd pose a terror to all ponies around her until the frenzy subsides... Rosa waited for Seafoam's response, but none came. Her student was too deep in the wasteland of her own choosing. "You hope to gain experience through this? Isn't it wise to learn from the mistakes of others, not yourself?" "You-- you know why I'm doing this." The Huntress battled another onslaught of coughing fits, determined not to waste her breath. "It's because I... because I can do it. I can get through, Rosa." Seafoam paused to collect herself, determination coming back to her eyes. "Have to know I'm strong enough. St-strong enough to fight." Again, her mentor shook her head. "My dear, gentle Seafoam. You are strong enough to fight. I know it true to my heart." Rosa gently put a hoof to her grey chest, and allowed a small grin to show on her face. "Since the day my blade chose you, I have seen your strength, your valor. You cherish the family life brought you, and you have a deep love for this world. This is all a mare needs to keep it safe. This is why you were chosen, Seafoam." A tear rolled over the bridge of Seafoam's muzzle, gently absorbed by the lush grass she lay upon. She didn't know she'd begun crying, but now she couldn't make it stop. More tears poured from her eyes, even once she closed them to sob. How Seafoam longed to hear Rosa's voice again. To be congratulated, and loved by her. The chasm of hunger still hurt, but did not overwhelm her mind anymore. For in her crying she felt such relief to hear those words from her mentor. No devistation could dry the well of Seafoam's heart.

Even tossing his weapon aside did nothing to demonstrate his absolute lack of desire for hostility against her, thinking to himself that she was either deaf or just plain stupid or naïve herself. In just a moment, came to the conclusion that she had no idea what she was talking about, and it was her delirium that fueled her already existing and unreasonable disdain for him. "Me?" he queried almost innocently while pointing to himself, looking around as if seeking another opinion from another on the matter, though it was more a gesture to accentuate his word. 'Now you wish to destroy me while weakened?' she asked, to which the stallion took immediate insult. 'You cannot challenge me' she added in what seemed to be an attempt to make herself out to be far more than what she currently appeared to be. "Wrong." he plainly stated as if it was absolute truth. "Are you associated with the Order of the Black Rose?" he would ask in return. Initially, he had no ill intention against her. Even so far as already having in mind to help her, if she needed it. Seafoam appeared to be in terrible shape, her evident laborious attempts to just keep standing and to speak seemed taxing enough on the starved mare. To him, she had no place, nor right, to accuse him of such intentions. "I can confidently say that you are not. You have the power to easily kill me, yet here I am since that day. You are no enemy, so it would be wise that you stop acting like it." he demanded, emphasizing the word 'acting'. "I can challenge you, but that would be wrong." he continued, picking his words carefully enough to put as much reason into them as he could, all the while leaving room enough to let her know that he is not to be taken lightly otherwise. "I did not come here to torment you." he pointed, using the gesture to the conversation back to her. "Nor should you dare imply I even knew you were here to begin with, it would be foolish of you." He had no intentions on harming her, or performing any form of aggression against her. She was in no shape for such conflict, and Hawk knew this. Ideas and thoughts ran through his head like simulation scenarios in a computer, calculated and deliberate, he shot a glance back to his saddlebags with an idea in mind. It required her cooperation, however, as no matter how much he would want something for any given situation, he would never have the right, nor the inclination, to force it upon others. Even if they were just as stubborn as her and refused it out of some misguided attempt at being tough. Again he would turn his gaze back to her, keeping an eye closely on every move she made. Now that it was safe to look her in the eye now, he would do so as he watched her struggle to keep standing with sheer will and the seemingly unreasonable contempt she held against him. For all intents and purposes, he had more a heart to help her instead of hurt. Just looking at her form alone triggered his desire to do good, to the best of his capabilities, even if he still gets flak for it. So it was that he went back to his pack to pull out another portion of what rations he had, as well as a fresher bottle of water he had stashed in there. "You can despise and hate me all you like." he said. "But unless you kill me, you will not stop me from doing what I can to help others who need it." Hawk cared not about trying to walk on eggshells, nor speaking in a manner to attempt to placate her. He spoke with purposeful and voluntary intent. He knew what he was doing and saying, with no fear for what may result of this exchange. All his worries were specifically on helping and doing the right thing. Something she seemed to know nothing about, given his memory of her answer to that question. If she truly believed the answer she gave, he wondered why she still lived. Who knows? he thought, perhaps something to address and touch on later if he has the chance.

Fight alongside or against her kin? What audacity had he to tell her yes or no? Obviously he desired to take advantage of her state. He should have taken his cue to leave... But here he was, gesturing and boasting to make his peace. Even while devoting such effort to stand, she perceived he wasn't here to fight her. Things were... off. He wasn't tense like her, or sneering, or moving to retrieve his weapon after dropping it during his initial surprise. Even so, she steeled herself and continued glaring. He made this talk about her not trying to kill him, foolish to assume his intentions. Of course she assumed his intentions, one must be a step ahead of ponies like him! Dangerous, bumbling fool! Maybe she should take him out of his misery and kill him right here... And by the Sisters, how delicious his blood would be. Healthy blood from the opposite sex was the greatest savory sort. Her literature described the how's and why's, and from two pony's blood she's sampled as a vampire, Chiller Sway held most intoxicating. Lemon's blood was... well not the same. Oh Hawk would be delectable... Yes her mouth and fangs knew it. They rung desperate anew, becoming cold and metallic within her muzzle. The only thing that could appease them would be to drink this stallion half dry~ The muscles in her legs seized to iron chords, wound tight, aching to be unleashed. The same intensity bunched up her wings, priming them through sheer confidence and hunger. A chill blitzed through her spine, seizing her every extremedy the same way. It would be easy. In this moment she felt she could tear the stallion apart before he knew what hit him. He'd take a wide look with that stupid one eye of his before meeting his destruction. Yes, yes he'd be utterly destroyed by her. Then she would feed. Feed. Feed. All at once, Seafoam realized that her fangs felt white-hot, and her vision hazy. Bloodlust had rapidly consumed what was left of her self-control. It ate the fury she felt for the stallion before feasting on her instinct. Muscles tight, fangs searing, wings shivering, her gut left to roil between her vampiric temptation or her mind's resilience. She cannot allow lesser instinct to rule! They inform her decisions, not make them! "You should not assume things about vampires." Seafoam uttered darkly while he studied her. She closed her eyes and concentrated on her breathing to work her muscles back down. It clearly took alot of effort on her behalf... whatever exactly she was doing, Hawk probably didn't realize she saw him as a tasty meal right now. How could he know without being a vampire himself to understand the desire? Regardless, she slowly got her act together. Her ears, wings, and the intensity in her legs slowly eased to more relaxed states. When she opened her eyes she nearly collapsed from utter mental fatigue, but stubbornly managed to catch herself and remain upright. She caught her breath for a moment before looking at Hawk again, now able to perceive his water bottle and food rations. Now able to think a little, this sight puzzled her. Did he really intend on giving those to her right now? Confusion betrayed her face. After all the effort it took to reign back her instincts she scarcely understand how he wanted to offer her something. She couldn't tell if it really was for her or not, her vampiric haze made her feel a bit out of the moment. Was Hawk... not trying to fight her??

No..too cliche he thought, though it was a good subtle staple. Perhaps chocolate chip, he thought. "Nah.." he muttered under his breath before taking out a bar of blueberry granola. During which time he was doing this, Seafoam was contemplating on his destruction, borderline relishing in the the thought even. Most of her preconceptions and assumptions about him regarding herself were indeed partially true. What *did* he know about her or her life and what she has done? The answer was simple, nothing. The very fantasy of what she wanted to do was palpable even for the likes of himself, resulting in his eye burning and itching with a sense of wanting to retaliate as a response. He shoved those feelings down with a callous cruelty to the point where he rubbed his eye through the eyepatch to establish his own dominance over himself. She spoke once, giving him advice to not claim to know anything about her or her condition. True advice, he would acknowledge privately within himself. He would never deny that, but he did want to respond to it nonetheless. Initially turning his head to the right, then correcting himself after realizing he can't see from his right side, he turned his head back and to the left to address her once again, without stopping his procurement of food and water "You are not the first." he boldly said. The first time and second time, sure, they were educated guesses based soley off just her eyes alone, as well as her unnatural strength and speed even for a pegasus. This time, it was officially confirmed, straight from the horse's mouth, albeit indirectly. Hawk took in a deep breath while sparing a moment to think of something else. She indeed was a vampire, and her starved appearance along with that lust for blood she seemed to give off as mere aura alone gave him an idea. It was a risk, raising a foreleg up a little and looking down at it, inspecting it for some reason, he looked back to his bag to pull something else out. He thought about it for a moment as he ran through many possibilities in his head, many didn't end well and others not so much but still had potential for him to not come out of it unscathed in some way. But he felt it was something that must be done, or else. He pulled out a clean and neatly folded handkerchief. To which he, at first, rejected in favor of looking for something else of a better use. Another short moment passed and he didn't find anything better, how disappointing, he thought. Now for the hard part, as he looked over at his weapon on the ground before getting up to pick it up. First, he looked around the ground to find a flat place to set down the granola bars he'd gathered, one of each flavor, and the bottle of water. Secondly, he turned his back to her while he would bring the blade to the flesh of one of his forelegs. Having wiped it on his shoulder of debris before so, it was easy, clean and smooth. He felt nothing for a split second, then a searing sting that could not be ignored went into his skin, and almost into muscle as he sliced himself. Drawing some blood by squeezing his foreleg, all the while with his back turned to her, he pressed the clean cloth to the wound to soak up the crimson flow that was encouraged by message. He hissed with an inhale and a wince as he did so, until the purely white fabric became soaked with that scarlet wine. Draping it over his wing, having it situated half-unfolded to do so, he dug through his belongings to pick out another cloth and tied it around that big cut. Preparations were done, putting the rest of his things away, and returning his weapon back into its scabbard that was situated on lower back, just under his wings, he stood to grab the food once again. The water too, gathering them clustered together to be carried with one hoof, close to the chest, and the other took hold once again of the steeped fabric as he rose to the air just enough to not touch the ground, made his way to her with his wings. He kept his distance, of course, he was dealing with a starved vampire and who knows what would happen. Alas, he couldn't do anything from being ten fee away from her at this point. So he made it a display to hold up the handkerchief toward her as an offering, holding it with his hoof underneath it to keep it from dripping too much. Taking a stop at a spot just five feet in front of her, carefully setting the snacks and water down in a way that would keep them fresh and clean, still holding the fabric of his blood out with his unscathed foreleg. It was here he could see her visible confusion. This perplexed him, made him wonder. Has nopony ever shown her kindness before?

Hunger is a poignant pain. Hunger gnaws and corrodes into a chasm of emptiness if unattended. Every creature is hungry now and then. In Equestria there is often plenty to go around, even for the magical and tenacious creatures of the Everfree Forest. Thus, few creatures experience hunger. Those who live at the far edges outside society, or the diamond dogs for example, who do not sufficiently plan to build an efficient one themselves. Even for these, the least in hierarchy's tall ladder, hunger can be appeased before the walls are eroded completely. But some creatures learned to harness the chasm of misery. How to lean into the empty space and find peace within that darkness. They who practice the little-known art of meditative fasting...

It was time to feed. It had been for about a week. The grasping, choking pits in her gut yearned for relief from famine and decay.
Seafoam was becoming exhausted. Fasting was not new to the Huntress, she could withstand a week's withdrawal and yet perform her duties. This was a hearken back to her warrior days to train head and shoulders above the best. Not even the Royal Guard measured to her resilience and skill. Certainly there were none who would voluntarily starve for a week, just for the meditation. Nay, neither would Seafoam. Normally a fast held a few days, enough for hunger pangs to settle deep and draw your full focus. Give the mind an anchor point to align with the body. But this is different. The Huntress has been testing herself. Even half vampires don't strictly need food. Yes it has much the same value to them as it does to ponies, but like four walls, you really only need a roof and a foundation for a home. Blood was such for the vampire. Leaves, grains, and stalk remain great for satisfaction, but conditions without mammal blood are dire. Half vampires such as The Huntress tacitly desire blood after 18 days. By day 25 they crave richly. Day 36 is the limit, sparking the a blind frenzy. In a Blood Frenzy it does not matter how many perish, or what quantities they drink. Only time, blood, and the mind's constitution can the end their trance. Tragically a vampire doesn't die if they don't find any blood to drink despite their frenzy. They only become dull and tired. Every starved breath in agony. Every wayward vessel, a target for their grief. Every vampire's craving for blood is a biological need. Our millennia's Huntress held silent atop her preferred meditation hill. It overlooked almost everything a good view could need: a freshwater stream, pristine meadows, huge trees that shook distantly in the breeze, and fluffy white clouds gliding above. Here the aqua pegasus could be far from civilized distractions, even most wild creatures. At this hilltop she could melt as one with her world. Nothing disturbed her deepest meditations here. But she was in so much pain. Unique pain she sought in order to study of her vampirism. Hunger pains were nominal experiences, she understood and utilized that pain. It's the vampiric craving that dries her, pulling the very willpower from her mind. Seafoam elected to fast from pony foods 7 days ago, knowing the vampiric craving would reach its fever pitch as well. Dated calendars allow her to keep track of her last feeding, so conceptually she understood her limits. Seeking to experience them at full power for herself, she took her leave from Ponyville and came out here to focus on her state. It took 5 days before her state became agonizing. She balanced on the brink of control all through the day and night. It was here she learned the new pangs of vampiric thirst. Dry and sandy pangs drilled through her stomach, her throat burned and swelled, and most painful of all her fangs felt hollow and sensitive. Muscles along the roof of her mouth burned and held tense, sometimes throbbing against her gums, desperate to feel fur or flesh for the fangs to pull fresh blood from. It felt no wonder a Blood Frenzy was inevitable, just as death for starvation. Cognizant of all hunger meditation's cycles, she grit her teeth and bore such pain until noon the sixth day. For her efforts she was awarded a dull peace, and her most earnest meditation began. A time she could focus on her body, and take notes to its state. paradoxically, she felt incredibly alive. But now it is the seventh day. Seafoam knew there was no more peace to be found in her meditation. It could only go downhill from here...

Energy had become a sparse resource. Apathy had set. This practice had one final purpose before she was allowed to eat. Pain. Tests are most challenging at their conclusion, and here she lay in the grass, succumbed to her misery. Sleep was no easy way out anymore. She'd fallen asleep after her meditative session across the sixth day and no longer desired rest. There were no ways to skip her self-imposed torment, only endure to the other side. Somehow she had to make it to the eighth day of her fast. Despite every shallow breath a tormentous effort, her every extremity dull with neglect, and everything from her mouth to her stomach in dire pain, The Huntress had to pull through. With the willpower to endure this, she could survive anything.

Part 3

Seafoam and I did not linger in the forest clearing for long. Other than to further scrutinize her being here, we've shared little by way of conversation. In a short sentence we agreed to return home, and have been flying at each other's side in silence. We've no need to discuss anything because we are identical ponies. There is nothing unknown to tell me. No memories we need to revive for each other, no bouts of physical strength, not a scar, nor feather's difference. Our first encounter together wrapped a bond which nopony compares to. She and I are one. I smile and look at her again. I do not actually know what expression she might have, though I have a guess to her thoughts. Were I in her place, I'd either be wondering what my role in this is, while feeling the lesser of us. Or I would be basking in our shared identity. What I do not know is how quickly she's moved from the first thought to the second, though I know she will heavily consider both. Yet I know for certain she will understand what I'm thinking about. Even I admit, my smile is an unlikely sight, especially as Huntress. I know even if she did not share my thoughts, she will decipher them in perfect clarity. Seafoam was still looking for geographic landmarks below us, as I had been a moment ago. While our sense of direction would be the envy of many explorers, we will study our environment [anyways]. She sensed my gaze and turned her head, a curious expression on her face at first. Of course, her motion was magnificent, a smooth adjustment of her neck, ears, and head. I felt a sense of pride wash through me at the sight of our precision, the same as I pride my mirror's reflection. However she holds stunning eyes that my mirror could never replicate. Bright, deep orange, gentle flickers of which chill other ponies to their core. Watching them aim upon me is a mixture of comfort and weariness.... As expected, her face doesn't mirror mine. It's easy read her thoughts over her place in all this, asking herself how to handle meeting Sway face-to-face. A version of her son, but he won't think of her as his mother. Not without convincing. I watch as her mind changes focus from herself, working out what my expression and timing means. After a short moment to clear her head, she gives me a warm nod. Only just a nod, and it's worrying me that she doesn't share my feelings. I thought she would come around quickly to it, but she's worried, not relaxed. Patience is a virtue. Only a featherfull of seconds later returned my smile, and by all my abilities to observe shared my sentiment fully. Still, the hint of worry hides in her eyes. "You're worried about your world moving without you?" Seafoam gave me a nod in response, and our expressions moved as one toward concern. "I fear the Warped you just killed may exist in my world." "It was very weak. You read that they cannot survive in the daylight?" Again she nodded, and this would be the last time I compare our knowledge. I wish not to alienate her as an outsider. This Equestria is not her home, but there is no difference outside Rovina's soul bind. I wouldn't wish to be cast as an outsider if placed in her hooves. I think she wanted to speak again, but fell silent after that exchange. We will reach the same conclusions about her Equestria in her absence, so there is nothing to ask nor tell of the matter. And the silence in each other's company is... soothing. She and I are one.

"Who are you?" Immediately, I chide myself for such a useless question. It was the first sentence I thought to speak once I'd turned to examine her. The question is too easy, she knows what to say as a changeling or a genuine replica. But I asked it anyway, and this still can give me some useful information. "I am Seafoam Noticus Wake." Her response included a quick and gentle curtsy, as I often perform. "I-- take it we share the name?" "Y-yes..." Our eyes hold for awhile, watching one another for tells, any foreign nervous ticks. Nothing of her behavior strikes me as unusual. Nothing of mine would be. With this moment to think, I realize there is some useful information from my question. Nothing concrete, but consider the fact that I asked first. She did not speak first, neither had we spoke at once. Were I precisely in her place I would have a clear reason to hold my tongue. Rovina is the key. We appear identical, but one of us cannot summon the blade. Once demonstrated the second Seafoam has a valid soul-bind, it should be clear who takes charge, no? Of course, other explanations exist. A changeling would hesitate. A pony impersonating me could use the time to better evaluate me. Making me go first would give her that advantage. I didn't realize I'd tilt my head until she performed likewise. Even her ears follow the motion. This wasn't random, the moment timed perfectly with my change in thoughts. I want to narrow the possibilities. I've made two valid hypotheses. The most likely explanation is still a changeling... Perfect mimicry is not impossible for their kind. The silence held. It must have been 5, 6 seconds unbroken now. No question left my lips, because the answer is in her eyes. This way she's looking at me... I do not mistake the almost imperceptible change in her face. Her mental focus arrived at a pinpoint all at once, and I think her expression has changed once again as my mine betrays a similar focus. I had thought to ask "Are you a changeling?" to read her response, after all I know how I would respond if I were asked. It was in the moments before I wanted to speak that this look appeared. She knew what I was thinking, it made me hesitate. For a moment I almost see humor in this. That my own face is so easy to read... But this brings its own list of observations. We know what I wanted to ask, and why I hesitated. And now we continue the silent study, I see the internal contemplation across her face. This time it is amusing, because she must understand my contemplation face too. It's important that she stayed silent. With her knowing my unspoken question, I've no need to say it aloud. And because I know her answer, she needs not respond. It's easy to say 'no' just to clear the air, but leaving the unspoken answer to my discretion is significant. She hasn't an ounce of hesitation on her face, for we know we've reached the same conclusion. What is the next question to ask? If you respond 'no' to impersonating somepony, it's imperative to deliver proof. Proof in the form of: 'Tell me something only Seafoam would know.' This is not an impossible deduction to make, but I am further curious what path she takes to arrive there. What I want her to do is realize there are no more tells on my face, for I have no thought process to interrupt. Then she must not audibly ask 'Do you want me to tell you something only Seafoam would know?' What she says next must be that knowledge. No leadup, I only want the truth. In predictable timing she straightened her posture and spoke. "Arrow Path, Pearly White, Palm Spirit, Feather Stride. Those are their names, in order." One nod of the head sealed her response. She held perfect confidence that her answer would persuade me. It was well placed. Only I could have known those names. Those details I never shared with anypony. Rovina dimmed to her magnificent alloy. I think she read my emotional state and concluded I didn't need her glow any longer. What I needed she couldn't provide: what to do next. It took me a moment to realize I was being tested as well. The information she gave was incomplete, something key she left out for me to say, and prove that I am genuine. I make the same motion of straightening myself before speaking in return. "Palm Spirit. He was the only one." I hoped my response was satisfactory. Yes, we were both dancing around the topic, but a Seafoam would understand our aversion. We speak only what we dare to acknowledge as history. Thankfully we only held eye contact for a little while, then I offer a final test, a simple one. Holding out Rovina I ask: "What is she called in your world?" She didn't have to think long before responding. "La Rovina Delle Stelle. That is the name Rosa gave her." I nod at this. Our stories check out. "If Sway were here, he'd suggest we are from alternate timelines, right?" She offered the joke with a smirk, and I couldn't help but share a smile. "He would say something like that." "There's no other explanation." We said as one.

Posited alongside many conspiracy theories, armchair speculations, and scientific inquiries, the phenomena of "rogue" or "freak" waves could explain the mystery of the Bermuda Triangle. Where the random patterns of ocean waves, storm fronts, and drafted winds intersect, might they coincide every now and then? To chain their forces together at just the right velocities? Prologue

Equestria is vast. So much larger than you can imagine. None of our little ponies will ever see all that this nation has to offer, even oncefold. The Appleoosans won't appreciate the late thrum of Baltimare's nightclubs. Those in Cloudsdale may never climb the precarious trails along the Crystal Mountains. Fillies reared in Canterlot might never set hoof in their own city's royal palace. And our friends in Ponyville may never lay their eyes upon Neighagra Falls past the printout of a polaroid. In a single night, I was bestowed a unique appreciation for all places unreachable. My dear mentor, Rosa, surrendered her Huntress title after she could no longer bear the strain. The past she'd buried never slept, and time just dug her wounds. The transfer of power was not easy. My ripped patch of bedroom carpet serves material proof of that. Compounding, Rosa's evening was not idly spent. One of the last things she said to me was that she had to 'face her demons alone'. "La Rovina Delle Stelle" - that is the name Rosa gave this sword I am soul-bound to - explained everything to me after the transfer of responsibilities. At first I was angry by the things it revealed, secrets Rosa had kept and never intended for me to know. Why she kept me in the dark, why she gave a short goodbye, and why we would not be allowed to speak for some time... I think I'll keep some of the secrets to myself for now. I apologize, this should not be a critique of an imperfect pony. It is the start of my journey. That night the sword also explained what my new and untapped understanding meant. How I sensed the entire world, but it all lay outside immediate thought. Hereon, I'll see where my enemy is throughout these lands. Not just Equestria, not just the dragon lands. Everywhere. And in recent Rosa had sacrificed greatly to banish them while I gain my bearings as Huntress, an unexpected silent gift from my predecessor. But this will not last forever. The moment any Warped appear, however weak initially, I will know with perfect clarity their whereabouts. I'm not allowed to tap into this vast knowledge of the entire world because it would collapse my mind to think so much at once. The knowledge will have to remain as an untenable tug at the back of my mind. Thankfully I can manage it from occupying my present thoughts. This exchange went both ways. While we are soul bound, Rovina (as I prefer to call her) wished to familiarize herself with me just as she had with Rosa. But this conversation was strange. It was not like anything I've had with a pony. We did not share words, nor did we telepathically converse in structured sentences. Our first hours together tumbled and flowed like memories. Or... no how shall I describe it... Sharing together was akin to surfacing a recent memory. I was conversing with my own mind, but it was the soul of Rovina I learned from. And she likewise from me. I cannot explain it better than that. When will the first Warped appear? I am a terribly anxious mare, I have to ask these things. It has been a month without activity from my kind's perpetual enemy. Rovina assures me it will not be too long. No more than five months before the weakest of aggressors crawl into Equestria, desperate to take her from me. She's the only weapon that can harm them, and I am the only pony allowed to wield her. Their main way of destroying Equestria is lost for a time, but they will come. They will always come for me.

Chapter 1 4 months later

I prefer Luna's quiet nights. I can remember a time where I thanked Celestia for maintaining the quieter sides of the day, but something about Luna's reign feels right to me. In so many ways, she contrasts the sun princess' yellow/red days, hot with the energy which drives the world forward. Luna's pale moonlight allows a time of gentle reprieve. Her smooth lullabies blanket the land, the grass, trees, all of us nocturnal creatures in such a way, when you listen closely, time can stand still. Such grace and power her sister never had. This is to say nothing of the brilliant skies her moon does not obscure. Sway tells me it's the difference in the refractive water of our atmosphere, but I am a simple mare. Science cheats the internal experience. Luna is just more beautiful. The grey canvas she provides, punctured by distant Stars, becomes my territory. From aground, few ponies can discern the night Huntress from the backdrop of vast space. A way for me to be everywhere, over everypony, and unknown. I hunt through the night to guard their existence, seldom receiving any thanks. The thought draws a smile on my lips, with the clouds and Stars as my only witnesses. I have always been a guardian to what I hold dear. Those who helped me in desperate times, or my assignments, anypony in my vicinity. I guard my lessons and the knowledge I've been taught. I guard most fearfully what defines myself as I see it. My pride, my usefulness, my determination, and my loved ones. Slowly the smile fades as I think about the things I can't save. Won't be able to save. What I know shouldn't last forever. I can battle eternity, hard to find a pony's will more reinforced than my own. I can fight for a hundred years, two hundred! I cannot be tackled in six hundred years, even a thousand, I will muster the strength to never surrender, it is Seafoam's power to overcome. I'm about to enter my usual reverie, talking myself over the fence of accepting that I will outlive everything external to me. But something new enters my mind. Something I've never experienced before, but I understand it perfectly. A single Warped has just defiled my world, making its sorry attempt to destroy all I hold dear. I know with perfect clarity where it is, and like the path through a familiar room, exactly how to reach it. My body instantly halts in place, like I'd hit a wall up here in the clouds. I can't continue my aimless, tireless night of flying. I have to turn southeast, to Equestria's borders. In the span of a wingbeat I decide it must not have enough energy to invade Equestria yet, it can only appear at the outskirts. By the third wingbeat I've turned south, the fifth and sixth propel me forward, and in just a few more I reach unnaturally high speed. Now I hunt. Adrenaline starts to spike within me as I narrow my eyes into tight slits. I wish I had somepony to share my excitement with here and now, but I think telling my family once they wake up in the morning will do. And right now, I need to fulfill my responsibility to send that creature back where it belongs: Dead from this world. I chose to fly instead of shadow walk toward my prey. It's different when you shadow walk, the world doesn't look or feel the same, and I want the memories from all of my senses tonight. When I reflect on this moment, the night of my first hunt, I want it to be in appreciation of everything around me. Of the cool air, the rushing wind, trees houses and hills sweeping my acute vision, and my pumping excitement. I won't make the conscious efforts to calm myself... Even I can take enjoyment in my work.

On future occasions, I will shadow walk. While breaking the sound barrier caused me no harm, it may have disturbed a few families living in the rural spaces of Equestria. I wish to apologize to those families, but it would be a waste of my time. Is this how I operate now? Reckless and unbound by fate's consequence? No, shrug the concern aside. Tonight is supposed to be remembered fondly. In addition, I know the answer is 'no'. It was an oversight, a victimless accident of sound. I would still avoid that mistake going forward... Still best to hold myself responsible for my mishaps. I will be the only pony able to. When I aim my pitch below the horizon line, it's to follow the defined path in my seventh sense - maybe better named "Huntress' Compass" - into my target. I can't see it yet, but the maneuver comes easily to my instincts. It would waste time to fly directly over the fiend before descending, just as landing nearby and walking the distance. No, I will intersect perfectly with its path. It will be splendid. I can already picture the unimpeded descent immediately into its sight. My decelerating speed in fractions of a second before the wind and noise shake the trees around it, kicking loose premature leaves and fickle branches. What creature could withstand such a display? The sheer might and terror I, the hunter, will bear down on its final moments in my land. Its movements are already so desperate and sporadic it may keel over at the sight of me. Everything about my arrival goes according to plan. My wide wings flare to brace my speed, and in moments I've slowed to a flyer's pace I would have considered normal before my vampiric strength. These strengthened wings fair better than the surrounding treeline mere feet below me. They shake, bend, and surrender their weaker leaves and branches in my downdraft. I must not smile this time, it's not appropriate for my image to be smiling of delight. Although a smirk might get the better of my self control~ Trajectory points 20 feet ahead of the invader, where I fully pivot and flare my wings a final time to kill my inertia 3 feet above the grass. I'm just about to finish the airtight flying with an intentional smirk at my foe, but I spot somepony already next to the creature. This can't be right, nopony is supposed to be near the Warped right now, and nopony would intentionally approach them. Their frightening appearance aside, this is the edge of Equestria. Who is this blue pony standing to its right? I can't focus on my original target now, only the iridescent yellow eyes of the pegasus before me. While I know they're 22 feet away, it's as if for a moment our eye contact is engulfing each other's vision. The unmistakable shimmer around her vertically narrow pupils, they betray her focus around my face, ears, wings, and shoulders. Following her cue, I survey her once over as well. Female, her face surrendering just as much confusion as my own... I know this face perfectly, but I double check the finer details, I have to be sure. I go through a list of structures over her face and body. Eyebrows, jaw, snout, eye spacing... I check her ears, dark blue tufts against her aqua coat. The Warped shrills weakly, but I don't want to think about it right now. This can't be happening, the mare standing over there... Pegasus? Indeed, wide feathery wings stretch across her sides, ready to aid her maneuvers. My eyes drift down to her left leg, and I know my enhanced night vision will let me spot my target. It's there. A ragged, distinct, painful scar running down her left leg. A wound gained from a bear claw many moons ago... I realize that this mare wasn't looking at my shoulders earlier. At my angle above her, the eyeline from her to my own left leg would be the same as my shoulders. She has all the same features, colors, and instincts as me. The same careful and observant look in our confused expressions, We're looking at two perfectly identical mares. We hold eye contact for several seconds after my realization. I first attempt to explain this with a changeling angle, but there are already some problems. Why would a changeling be disguised as me, at the outskirts of Equestria's borders, and facing down a Star Spawn with no fear? The Star Spawn, the Warped, yes, it's still here. We've spent too long staring at one another instead of our original purpose. As one we turn our gaze to the black, misty creature, closer to her than I. Why hasn't she killed it already? Being in such a weak state, this Warped can't take the shape of our fears tonight. If it had, I've often thought of it taking the form of my son, Chiller Sway. Perhaps injured or enraged in varieties of ways. How many times in the future are they going to force me to cut down those I love? And by thinking this, have I created the fear they'll weaponize against me? Thankfully I do not have the answer to that question tonight. It is just an angry, harmless cloud of dark mist. So again I ask, why is it still alive? I turn to the mare, and she's already looking at me, expecting something. It is bizarre, for I'm making the same expression to her. 'Where's your sword?' We ask without words. The perfect non-verbal communication nearly drives me to shudder. Instead I answer her with my outstretched hoof and call Rovina, who appears in my hoof without delay. She ignites in brilliant red flame across her breadth at my suggestion too. I continue to ask my question to the mare, but she doesn't seem to know right now. Though the act of summoning the Huntress' blade has put her at ease, for she cast her gaze to the Warped creature that brought us both here. 'What a first hunt.' I think privately to myself, not loud enough for Rovina to hear. Truthfully I no longer care for it, I want to know what this other mare, this apparent other Seafoam, is doing at my site. So there is no ceremony as I close the space to my target, and La Rovina Delle Stelle takes her first kill under my name. I take a moment to thank and congratulate her, then ask her to stay a moment longer. We need to investigate this copy of me, this Seafoam without a blade.
