Not in his panicked state… That left only one thing to do. “Gray. Stay where you are, I’m callin’ 911. I ain’t far from home, as soon as I’m done, I’m headin’ there. We’ll go to the hospital together. Okay? Please, please don’t apologize… I know you don’t want to hang up, but I have to go. Just— just hang out a little longer.” This could very well be the last time they talked. Carmine knew it, Gray probably knew it. The detective heaved a sigh and fought back a teary sob once that familiar, yet nameless feeling rose up from his chest and mind… He can’t let anything go unsaid. “I’ll be there in five minutes. Ain’t that far of a walk… if I’m late, hold it against me at the festival, okay? Don’t apologize, you did great. You did fantastic… he’s still none closer to her.” It was so, so hard to stop from joining him in crying, but he couldn’t let the actor’s rock see beneath the mask. “I— I love you. I do… I love you so much and I’m sorry I had so much trouble sayin’ it. Please… please, just hang on.” In a way, he felt like putting the phone down consigned Gray to his fate. But he still had to be there. He set the phone down. And right away, he knew Trip needed no context. “I have to go home. Look— I’ll do anything you say. Anything. Whatever it takes, but I… I gotta go. Call 911, tell them a man’s been stabbed at Dismal Rentals. Blood type B. Just— my number’s on the desk, call me later. Lock the door on your way out!” And with that, Carmine made a mad dash for the door. Carmine lied, the run was far, far longer than five minutes, and his leg hindered it, but damn did he try. The first few blocks were okay. He had control over his breathing, and his legs were responsive. He broke through numerous pedestrians, hardly issuing a “Sorry” when he knocked a few ponies to the ground. He was making good time! Between alley shortcuts, Jay walking, and the occasional crowd, he was actually doing decent until poor timing at a crosswalk forced him to tumble over the hood of a car. He fell, as anyone would’ve guessed, and skinned his cheek and hands against the cement. His bum leg stung something hollow, like it was sprained, but even then he just stood up and hobbled the remainder way. He even managed to beat the medics there. Seeing the building granted him a second wind to power walk up the stairs and barrel through. “Gray! Gray, I’m here!”

There had to be something that he could do for himself, he attempted to press on the wound just like Carmine had instructed him to do. However, as soon as it stung, he stopped and returned to sobbing helplessly. To think that Berry had gone through something that was like it, only 1000 times more painful… It would honestly be ridiculous if all it took was one measly knife to the rib for himself. Yet the oddly comical contrast felt like a very real possibility, life could be that cruel. He didn’t doubt it for one second. But Carmine would have it even worse, Gray couldn’t imagine what was going through his beloved’s head. Imagine losing the love of your life, and then another… And just when their story had just begun. It was too sad. There was no need for Gray to torture himself with that, but there was nothing else that he could think about. Just that morning he had promised Carmine that he’d take care of himself. By the time Carmine broke into the apartment, a horrendous scene was waiting for him. Traces of the fight could be seen all over. For starters, the last 2 bullets Gray had blown through their front door. The broken window… and on the inside? A few chairs were knocked over from when Gray ran into Carmine’s room. The door was still open, and the kitchen had blood trails left by Hermes’ bleeding foot. Then there were the bullet marks on the floor and ceiling, and on the walls. Gray was a tight ball, slumped against a wall by the corridor leading to Carmine’s room, and curled over his stomach. He was no longer crying in despair, instead he was silent and catatonic with his gaze lost somewhere along the wooden flooring. The gun not far from him. His shirt and pants were soaking in red. Fortunately nothing vitals and no arteries were damaged! Carmine’s voice managed to bring him from the shock, long enough for him to turn his eyes at him and fill with tears again. He tried to roll over to open his arms, giving up nearly immediately since it had hurt to move. Those kicks he had received were also beginning to turn blue. “…I didn’t se the knives.” The actor frowned.
