His polite smile tightens—just a fraction—then softens again into something almost wistful. “Ah… well now, sugar,” he sighs, voice low and warm as candlelit bourbon. “Looks like I’m gonna have to withdraw the offer after all, and I surely do hate to do it.” He eases down from the stool with the careful dignity of a stallion who’s never once let the world rush him, settles the heavy bit-sack across his withers, and walks straight to the nearer kirin. Tiny hoof polished to a mirror sheen, he reaches up and lightly presses the lapel of his black suit against the kirin’s foreleg, as if measuring the weave against those shimmering scales. “Y’all are magnificent,” he murmurs, sincere as sunrise. “Truly. Sturdy as they come, and twice as beautiful. In your line of work—modelin’, runways, flashbulbs—I reckon standin’ out is the whole point. Gotta let ‘em know you’re the real thing the second you walk in the room.” He turns back to the mare, dark eyes soft with genuine regret. “But my situation’s… different. Too many of my guards have died just for bein’ noticeable. Assassins like to make a statement—take out the big, bright target first, put the fear in me by hurtin’ what’s mine. I’ve buried good ponies who were only standin’ beside me because they caught the eye before I did.” Big Lick steps closer, lifts one delicate hoof, and rests it atop hers—light as a moth, warm as forgiveness. “I’m sorry, darlin’. Truly. If you had changelings, or plain-coated ponies who could fade into a crowd, I’d sign the papers right here in the street. But these beauties?” He glances up at the kirins again, and a single tear catches the light in the corner of his eye. “Kirin horn fetches hundreds on the black market, and that’s before they even know it came off somebody brave enough to guard a bite-size stallion. I won’t hang that price on their heads. I won’t.” He gives her hoof the gentlest squeeze. “Not for all the bits in my bags.”
