You gotta' talk to em'.
As far as talking to new users go. If I find their post to be interesting, I reply. I'm not going to force myself to respond just to say I didn't just go for the popular guy.

I reply to something if a reply pops into my head when I read it. :P Which I'm sure goes for most other people. The 'popular' people are 'popular' because they know how to get attention and make an appealing post, imo.
