200 years. 200 years since colors filled the sky, blessing it with beauty and magnificence, but cursing the land with devastation and entropy. Meteorites rained down on the earth with enough force to level entire cities upon impact, sealing the fates of the few who suffered a direct hit. As if heeding one last silent call of defiance, the elements of harmony redirect the remaining meteors away from the atmosphere , just barely saving everything from total destruction. The day was (mostly) saved, or so it seems...
The meteors that did make landfall, emitted transparent mists of color shortly after impact, showing every part of the rainbow, and then some. Dancing through the air alongside Aurora Borealis-esque streaks of faint light, the colors grew more vibrant and plentiful during this time of year, in this part of the country, and localized entirely within the vicinity of the Crystal Elements. These colors appeared to not only commune with the Elements, but with the very magic in the surrounding land. This energy found itself being absorbed back into the meteors, leaving the Elements themselves dull and empty.
What followed immediately after was a massive shockwave, shaking the entire planet to its core, giving rise to dramatic changes, and no aspect of life remained innocent to its touch. Unicorns found themselves no longer the sole proprietors of magical channeling, and some even becoming unable to dispel magic at all. The rules that shaped such magic had been flipped upside down, with ponies; other species becoming able to manifest them in a variety of different ways. Magical powers, strange new abilities and unexplained mutations were experienced across the land. These ranged from the ability to manipulate solid rock as if it were water, or growing plants with the wave of a hoof. Others reported growing new horns or additional appendages, and some even morphed into different beings entirely. Regardless of its effects, they all seemed to be random and unconnected in any way. A little over half of ponies (hereafter including other species), remained unaffected. But amidst these events, normality becomes an oddity, and equestrian society plunged into absolute chaos. To those directly affected, their changes would go generally go undocumented. Those that were documented, their information, or even themselves, would be kept away from the general public.
Fast forward to our present day society, it has managed to rebuild itself in despite of this chaos, albeit a far cry from the harmony and peace of yesteryear. For over two centuries, those meteors have laid dormant, standing silent where they had fallen. But some have become hubs of prosperity and growth. New cities and settlements being built around the giant impact craters. This seems to be largely contributed to the fact that the meteors, despite largely believed to completely inert, still bled enough magic to affect those in relatively close proximity to their sites. These effects include enhancing one’s newly found abilities, and helped alleviate any difficulties faced from having such powers. But not all of these places would be equal, as each city had its own host of chaotic changes, giving rise to primitive monarchal kingdoms, massive modern metropolises, and everything in between.
This is where you come in. Who are you? What will you do with the powers you're given, if you even have one? What mark will you leave upon the ashes of rainbow apocalypse?
(Yay title mention!)
(My brain fried half-way through so lets assume the Elements of Harmony softened the impact of a few of those pesky meteors)
