Long ago, a family bore their first child. A prospect of which the new parents had excitedly prepared for many years in advance.
However, when their child was born unto them, excitement, and joy, turned to resentment, and fear.
The Eye of the Voidwatcher. A curse, long forgotten by the world, but not by this family. A curse, which had plagued their family for many generations. Though it was rare, a curse is still a curse. With their firstborn daughter bearing the eye, it spelled disaster for any potential siblings. This once happy family, would never be able to live the life they'd so dreamed of.
The parents named their firstborn daughter "Deena", which means "Unwanted." Though they resented, and even reviled their firstborn daughter for her curse, they still provided for her, though, only what could be considered the bare minimum. Despite the ill portents of their firstborn, the parents pressed forwards with their attempt to raise a happy family. Unto them, were born two more children. Another daughter, and a youngest son. For these two, their parents bent over backwards to ensure their success, and happiness. All the while, their eldest sister was left alone, to bear her curse until the day the parents could finally be rid of her.
Despite her curse, Deena attended school much as her siblings did. Though, while they made friends, and became beloved by their teachers, Deena was mocked, and ridiculed by her peers, and mentors alike. When word of the nature of her curse spread, her peers opinions of her siblings began to deteriorate, and soon, they too were outcasts. They blamed their eldest sister for their misfortune.
Throughout her adolescence, Deena retreated further, and further into seclusion. Social life was but a long-distant dream for the cursed child, and life brought nothing but scorn, and hatred from all who met her.
Until, a fateful day.
One day, in her second year of middle school, Deena met a boy. He was bright, cheerful, and did not avoid her. Instead, the boy actively sought her company, and did his best to bring light into her dreary, dark life. For a time, Deena found happiness in this boy's company. The two became inseparable friends, and soon, his family welcomed Deena into theirs.
Their friendship was strong, but not 2 years later, the two were separated when they were moved to different high schools. Despite this, the two kept in touch throughout their high school years. When they could find the time the two would meet in person, but for the most part, they were stuck communicating through texts, and video calls.
When Deena turned 18, in her senior year of high school, her parents unceremoniously kicked her out of their house, and turned their backs on her for good. With nowhere to go, Deena reached out to the only person who had ever showed her kindness. He was quick to act, and before long, Deena found herself the guest of a loving family. She moved to the same high school as her friend, and soon, became a part of his small, but closely knit friend group.
One day, as the two walked home from extracurricular school activities, Deena stopped the boy. At first, the two simply stared at each other. Deena's heart raced, but her mouth would not move to say the words she so desperately wished to tell him. The two shuffled back and forth, each attempting to build up the courage to say what they both wanted to.
In the end, he spoke first, and confessed his feelings for Deena as more than a friend. In turn, Deena confessed her feelings, and the two embraced.
For the next 3 years, Deena's life took a drastic turn in a positive direction.
After high school, the friends all moved north, to Vanhoover, and Deena accompanied them. There, she and her partner blossomed into a deep, and loving relationship. Though her curse was far from her mind, Deena was not free of it, and soon enough, her ignorance would have dire consequences.
