View More((gentle warning that this is a little bit on the long side, so you may not want to open the whole post if you're just here to scroll through the void <3)) Pat-pat. Pat. Pat-pat. Pat. Each step left just the slightest indentation on the compact earth beneath Mirror's hooves. She held one hoof steady, never bending it or letting the polished surface meet the path. It gave her a limp. Pat-pat. Pat. A half-formed thought meandered through her mind. Something about walking... Why was she walking? Perhaps she was going somewhere. Somewhere important? No, that wasn't right. There was nowhere of much importance left to her. It seemed odd, then, that she would keep walking. Her legs were sore. Each step sent a sharp ache jolting up, like her bones were rebelling against her flesh, and she was quite tired. Tired... But she felt compelled to keep going. Keep moving. If she stopped now, she would not have the will to start up again. Getting to wherever she was going was urgent. She needed to be there. And not long after, there she was. She stopped so abruptly that she stumbled. Sunlight poured in through the break in the trees and ripped away the comfort of the dark. Mirror blinked several times. No. No, no, this couldn't be right. This couldn't be where she was meant to go so urgently. There was nothing and no one here, hadn't been for months now. She felt her heart stutter. Her breathing hitched. Golden-orange light danced through lush green grass and played on the petals of flowers. Crystalline water glittered, tumbling from stone to stone to pond, bubbling and then becoming so still and flawless that the smooth, black stones that lay along the bottom were perfectly visible. A bee flew by. Mirror could not even find the will to cry. She stared at Faith's clearing without registering its beauty - not seeing that perfect, fairytale world. She could only see it through the memories she'd built there. It was angry, it was hateful, it was the only place she felt safe. She was walking again. Her steps were muffled by the grass, warmed in the sun and damp with the remnants of dew. She crossed the clearing and took a step into the water, cold shocking her in waves that matched the ripples she sent skidding across that serene surface. She waded in, further and further until the water was at her throat. She raised her chin to keep it above the water, and she stopped there, the water lapping at her fur and tasting at her skin. For minutes she stood, shivering, blinking, still. Her mind was blessedly silent save for a dull buzz in the background. Tentatively, almost curiously, she took another step. The water came up just past her jaw. She had to breathe through her nose, slow and steady. A deadly calm settled over her mind. It would be so easy. So simple. Mirror shut her eyes, standing as still as she possibly could. After a time, she stopped shivering, her body accustomed to the temperature of the water. The cold. "Perhaps I acted too rashly," she murmured, voice as soft as the breeze that stirred only the lightest leaves of the foliage. "Was it really so terrible?" Silence met her words, as had it always. "I was always alone, yet I never felt lonesome. It is worse, I think, than being afraid. It is being afraid on all sides, frightened of shadows and of light, and it is exhausting. I feel as though I have been locked away in a cupboard to wait." The water brushed her lower lip. Her apparently serene expression compressed into a small frown, though she still did not open her eyes. Just a little louder, she asked no one the question that had been burning within her and eating away at her. "What is it I am waiting for?" #rp
