View MoreIt had been about two days since the encounter with Hex Mistress, and since Lilith’s disappearance. Carmine, of course, inserted himself in the investigation as both a favor to the police department, and so they had a more direct source regarding the good doctor’s whereabouts. As a direct result, he had begun getting in to his ‘overworking’ phase, the one that nearly sparks his downfall whenever someone close to him winds up huff. He stood at Berry’s smoothie bar, his deep, dark bags beneath his eyes suggesting that he hadn’t been spending much quality time with his his mattress. Alarmingly, Berry also had not heard a peep out of Lorne since… so, she gave her temporary roommate a task: call up Gray, get everyone here. Seven has obviously made his move and everyone needs to stick together so that they could not only plan what next to do, but to prevent any more of them for being snatched. She gave herself the duty of ringing up Lorne’s residence in the hopes that she might get some insight to his whereabouts. Carmine was the first to arrive. Right off work, too. He carried a grim expression as he walked through the door’s chime. Berry trickled in from the upstairs with a similarly hopeless look on her face. “He isn’t answering his phone, like, at all,” Berry whimpered. “I just called his mom and apparently she thought he was staying with one of us… I don’t know where he could be!” The worry was clear as day on her tired face. Still, he wasn’t the only one among them missing. Her head tilted up to meet Carmine’s gaze. “Any word on Bonesy?“ The detective shook his head. “No… not a thing. We just took a glance around her apartment, though… I’m pretty sure she’s still alive. We just got word back from the lab: the blood they found in her apartment isn’t hers— it belonged to… well, someone we knew.” Berry perked up. “Who?” “The Loan Shark. Bull,” Carmine answered. “They… found his head in the dumpster at Sawbones’s building. DNA matched right down to the last drop.” #rp

View MoreThat little gag with the shirt was all the motivation Trip required to really get things going. They were prepared, they were armed and well protected. Now all they needed to do was to allow Lorne to get his special tools and to reunite with the other pair of idiots for the showdown. Speaking of which… —————— Carmine had done most of the preparing, whereas Gray spent most of his own time following him and imitating whatever choices the other had made. They repassed a few gun safety rules beforehand, then the actor equipped the spare in his belt. Now, he wasn’t as quick a draw as an experienced shooter was, but it was way better than to show up empty handed. For once, Carmine was the talkative one. Gray had mostly kept to himself. It was incredible really, how the somnolent detective managed to pull himself by his bootstraps despite the lack of sleep… even to the point where he was able to jest about missing his spear. Meanwhile, Gray sure wished he had downed some of that golden liquid bravery in his cabinet before he had taken the driver’s seat. The thought hadn’t even crossed his mind at the time; they were in such a hurry. Now that he was thinking about it, when was even the last time he had smoked a cigarette? He could use one for the nerves. The actor was doing his damn hardest not to let the panic show, and it was wonderful acting for the most part! You know, if one could ignore his iron grip on the wheel and the downward angle his ears were tilted at. It was Carmine’s hand prying his off the wheel, which finally seemed to snap him out of it. Gray’s eyes immediately fell to his hand, then followed a straight path to meet Carmine’s gaze. “W…what’s that supposed to mean!? As if I could hide, idiot. We’re partners, I’ve told you it! My only rightful place is at your side—a- and if we both get skewed by that guy’s creepy chain arm, then that’s it; That’s how we go! I’m not falling back, Carmine…” he grumbled. Despite the outburst, Gray squeezed that hand and brought it to his face to gently place a kiss right on its back. “I’m not saying that something will happen but… if something does happen…” Gray cleared his throat, “I just want you to know that you’re the best thing that has ever happened to me, probably for all my life.” He sighed, allowing his fears and frustrations to flow along with the air he released. “…I love you.”

Gray had promised not to be a hero, but by the looks of it, they did need one. “Okay, okay, okay! Then get out of the way!” the actor waved a hand dismissively and took a deep sharp breath. He wasn’t sure that he could get out of the way that fast, but being an actor, he was the closest thing to a rodeo clown they had. Yet again. However… “How long are you going to hold onto that narrative…?” a scoffing, -or maybe he was coughing- Trip jeered as he rolled onto his side. While he wasn’t quite out of the board yet, he couldn’t even bring himself to stand. “Even during your wake… you refuse to let go of that pathetic lie…” the tinkerer began to provoke him again. Good…!? Gray didn’t know what to do at first, if he made it too obvious that he was the target, Sabbath would know better than to hit him… He took advantage of Trip’s distraction and stealthily made his way behind the armored giant, pretending like he was going to attempt and cut the line. He didn’t have the instruments to do it, but that wasn’t the objective! He only needed to present himself as a threat. He was still trying to think of a clever phrase to bring attention to himself. Trip -who was completely unaware of the plan- took notice of Gray’s silent approach; to him it looked as though the actor was walking the green mile. What was that idiot doing!? “Gray back off!!!” the tinkerer urged in a desperate growl. Gray stopped in his tracks, surprised. It wasn’t entirely an act since he didn’t think Trip would call him out like that, but it certainly should work in their favor right!? It had to bring attention to himself! The actor made sure to stand directly in front of the targeted box, ready to jump out of the way, were Sabbath to turn around suddenly.

Up until the man of the hour turned to face him. The actor shot his hands up next to his chest, they were indeed empty. He then began to slowly back away in a straight line, closing the distance between himself and the box. It was too bad that Trip’s call also awakened Carmine and Berry. Their pleas weighted heavy in Gray’s ears; he couldn’t blurt out the plan to them to ease their concerns. Even as Carmine’s voice tore with despair and anguish, and Berry had found the strength to stand up. Gray simply bit his lower lip and continued to backstep, slowly… Two birds one stone… did that make *him* the stone? Hah… stone. A stoner, maybe! Gray was more or less built like a twig, he was sure Meeks could snap him in half with those gigantic forearms. The actor sniggered nervously; he was having second thoughts. “I... I’m sorry that things didn’t work out in your favor Meeks. You had good intentions…” he bargained, but really, he was just winning time. “I always thought that it was nothing but a corny film-industry thing--- you know, t-the whole ‘Hero lives long enough to become the Villain’ thing?” Gray could babble all he wanted; in the end the chains were still actioned against him. The actor relied on gravity, he dropped and rolled! On the way down a chain did indeed make brief contact, but it only damaged his haircut! Gray rolled about 3 feet then kept his head shielded between his arms against the concrete. If the chains had indeed headed straight for his chest, then they should have followed that very same route into the box, hopefully!? Gray had obscured his own sight to prioritize his own safety. Trip’s eyes grew wide, it wasn’t until Gray’s slim frame was out of the picture that he took notice of Sawbones and the sigil she had drawn on that box. That’s right! Gray was only the pawn luring Bloodbath Sabbath to the real piece at play there: Sawbones.

View More“Rewriting it,” Berry echoed with a light tone to Trip’s mirroring. “I like that.” Then, Trip name dropped the most enticing mystery of them all: Doctor Sawbones. Or, Lily Demeter, as their months long adventure had revealed her to be… the mysterious woman who wears a mask for no reason other than her own security. And apparently, she was involved with the Eights up to a certain point… Could she forgive her? There was no reliable answer behind that. Not right now. Lilith was still a friend, but learning about her dark backstory behind her ‘dead’ daughter and the role she played in Meeks and Berry’s tragic downfall was no less than something horrible… “We’ll see,” Berry replied. “I still have a long, long list of things to do… and dealing with Bonesy is very, very low on that list. She’s been through enough… I’ll talk to her when we’re both ready.” The elevator dinged, and the pair was spat out to the ground floor. Off to the side was their friends, Carmine, Lorne, Lilith and Gray, surrounding… well, who else? Their eyes all turned to see Berry and Trip. Surprise, surprise, the lump on the ground was still breathing… barely. “He asked us to wait for you,” Carmine solemnly stated. Meeks wasn’t dead… but it’s obvious that he doesn’t have long. The pool forming in the back of his head was growing larger than the dusty dirt could soak it up, and his right eye had stopped moving all together. “Hey,” Berry said. “Hey yourself…” Meeks sputtered. His one movable eye had exchanged a glance with her pair of unblemished baby blues. A single locked stare took the place of a million apologies… Without needing to be signaled, Berry laid down beside him and took hold of his shattered hand and wrist. “I… really lost it, didn’t I…?” Meeks wryly laughed. “I don’t think anyone here’s totally in her own mind,” the batter snickered. Her eyes searched Lorne, who took the hint to lay down at Meeks’ other side. The three were locked hand-in-hand while the middle continued to bleed. “I’m sorry.” “I’m sorry, too,” the villain sighed. “I still… I’m still angry. I still blame you… Berry, why’d you go after him like that? Why’d you— *cough*— why’d you… agree to go along with it? I don’t understand…” Berry fell silent whilst she gathered her thoughts. Her straight line lips curled into a soft, almost ghost of a smile. “Same reason you saved my life. For love that couldn’t possibly be reciprocated… Meeks. I’m sorry that I didn’t love you like you wanted… I’d hoped my friendship was enough…” “And it was. Or… it should’ve been,” he quickly corrected. “I just… I kept thinking about your smile. Every beating, every under-salted meal, every cold winter night without a blanket or pillow, the only thing that kept me going was… thinking about you. How you won your innocence. What kind of life you’d be living… but as the days kept going without a word from you, that smile in my head it kept growing more and more sinister. I couldn’t get you out of my head, even when I was begging you to leave…” Berry’s voice trembled. Her hand grew tighter in his. “I’m sorry… I was just—“ “You don’t need to answer… we’ll have plenty of things to talk about in Hell.” Lorne chimed in, his voice quiet and meek. “It’s— it’s not too late… I can call an ambulance; we can save you!” Meeks was the first to shut it down, though. “No… I lost, Lorne. It’s over. It’d be a shitty final boss if he just decided to resurrect himself with no consequence? Besides… I’m…” his voice had lost a lot of its luster. “I’m… really, really tired…” Lorne didn’t like to hear it, but Berry understood. She bit her lip, and leaned in to plant a final goodbye in his burnt cheek. “It’s time for you to rest…” “One… more thing— *cough*— just… I know & don’t have the right to ask but… don’t… don’t tell Mettle. I didn’t know he was involved. It should stay that way…. And my mom… and… dad… don’t… don’t… let them… forget who I…. was….” Meeks breathed out one last time… and he did not suck in another breath. It took a while for the remainder of the party to pry themselves off of their fallen friend, but they were eventually convinced by the persuasive comfort of those still living. Carmine offered a simple phrase to Lilith, whose green eyes averted his gaze every step of the way. A simple phrase of understanding… and for her to come to him when she was ready. Trip was given the shit job of disposing of Meeks’ corpse, and of helping construct an additional narrative to satisfy the media hawks. The next day, all in Manehattan had received the news: the prolific serial killer known as Blood Bath Sabbath had apparently been killed by one of his would-be victims, a doctor who refused to be identified in any way. Opportunity arose, and she was able to neutralize her attacker by burning her captivity to cinders and trapping him inside. Though a body was recovered, it was completely charred beyond recognition… Of course, the media spent hours of research trying to uncover the identity of the mass murderer, but like all news stories the interest was destined to fade and it became business as usual. Those involved moved on. Carmine and Gray were finally in talks with a proper realtor on buying a house. A small, dingy looking home, but they had the means, the time and the know-how to fix up their home proper. At least for this purchase they were able to save a little more money in account of losing a bedroom. Lilith returned to both her jobs when she was ready. Her last fortune for the night was read for her favorite customer, the young Persephone. She came in, asking questions about her mother beyond the grave. What would she think of her? Lilith smiled, she didn’t need to converse with the spirits in order to relay her mother’s answer. “She would be so proud of the young woman you’ve become…” Lorne, meanwhile, had just sold his newest best-seller: The Man With Two Hearts. It was a children’s book, obviously, relaying the story of a brave young man who fell victim to a dark wizard’s curse. This man was given a happier ending, with the wizard losing the battle of souls and the man reclaimed his heart. Days turned to weeks and the conflict had all but faded from the minds of Berry’s crew. She had even reopened her store and resumed business as usual while keeping up with her newest side hustle. The store’s last hours were winding down to a close. Berry’s busy day ended with washing dishes to the tune of her favorite song… And then the door jingled. Her young zebra friend, Dot, stood in the frame with her arms crossed. “Ma’am. Got a lead on that girl you’ve been asking about.” “Good work… Number One,” Berry teasingly giggled. “How’s it feel being on top now?” The zebra scoffed, but shot back Berry’s wide grin. “Pretty damn good. I’ll text you the deets later, Ms. Eight.” After letting her smile fall, Dot vacated the building. Berry brought out her prized possession, her aluminum bat, now scuffed with damage from metal and bone… “One more job,” she cooed. Her hands stroked along the fat end of the bat like it was a whimpering dog. “We’ve got to go find Cryssy…” After locking up her kingdom and twirling around the key, Berry hung the bat over her shoulder and hummed the final notes to her song. Maybe it’s about time to update the playlist. Whenever she gets back…
