View MorePressed nearer to the wall with each collision, too uncomfortable to speak up, Bubblegum reflected on the decisions that had led her back to the roller-rink today. She had hoped coming here at an entirely different time would stop her run-ins with the bat pony. Just one time, she would have liked to skate in peace. The next crash saw the rink's edge bite into her shoulder. It smarted like something that intended to bruise later. Bubblegum grimaced. She watched the stranger skate away again. She failed to speak up again. It was time to go. Before the next lap, Bubblegum fumbled along the wall to the little gate and stepped onto the carpet, legs a little wobbly - she hadn't really managed to figure out the whole being-on-wheels thing. Tedious though the task was, she made it to a table stained by the remnants of liquid nacho cheese, awkwardly placed herself on the minute portion of a bench that wasn't sticky with spilled soda, and started trying to untie the laces of her skates with all the coordination of a pumpkin toadlet. Teeth really were awful tools for this sort of thing. Who had thought it was a good idea to force horses to tie knots? Overhead, the loudspeaker crackled to life. Then came the dread voice of the DJ, to speak of what cruel fate had been narrowly escaped by only a precious few.The doors of the rink shut hard, a set of concussive slams that align in one unified clap like thunder. Locks clicked into place with eerie finality. Bubblegum raised her head to stare, in horror, through the thick plastic panels who mocked both windows and empty space with scratched, cloudy transparency. She loathed to watch, yet could not bring herself to tear away her gaze from the wretched scene now unfolding. Children screamed. Parents tried desperately to calm them into an organized line in the center of the rink. Individual skaters clustered into the same line; hesitant, searching one another for reassurance that this was normal. A hush fell; the clamor for answers abated. One uniformed pony skated forward to stand before them all. His eyes were hollow. His face told of countless nights of rounding up strangers and cajoling them into following simple instructions. She had only barely made it out before it was too late, Bubblegum realized. Her eyes scanned the line-up, searched for the stranger that had inadvertently saved her from a fate they would suffer yet still. She wondered if perhaps they had known what was coming. If it had been a kindness, to remove her before that hateful condemnation had been issued from the loudspeakers. There - still inside, damned with the others. All knew, now, what awaited them. It was time... to do the hokey-pokey.
