View MorePressed nearer to the wall with each collision, too uncomfortable to speak up, Bubblegum reflected on the decisions that had led her back to the roller-rink today. She had hoped coming here at an entirely different time would stop her run-ins with the bat pony. Just one time, she would have liked to skate in peace. The next crash saw the rink's edge bite into her shoulder. It smarted like something that intended to bruise later. Bubblegum grimaced. She watched the stranger skate away again. She failed to speak up again. It was time to go. Before the next lap, Bubblegum fumbled along the wall to the little gate and stepped onto the carpet, legs a little wobbly - she hadn't really managed to figure out the whole being-on-wheels thing. Tedious though the task was, she made it to a table stained by the remnants of liquid nacho cheese, awkwardly placed herself on the minute portion of a bench that wasn't sticky with spilled soda, and started trying to untie the laces of her skates with all the coordination of a pumpkin toadlet. Teeth really were awful tools for this sort of thing. Who had thought it was a good idea to force horses to tie knots? Overhead, the loudspeaker crackled to life. Then came the dread voice of the DJ, to speak of what cruel fate had been narrowly escaped by only a precious few.The doors of the rink shut hard, a set of concussive slams that align in one unified clap like thunder. Locks clicked into place with eerie finality. Bubblegum raised her head to stare, in horror, through the thick plastic panels who mocked both windows and empty space with scratched, cloudy transparency. She loathed to watch, yet could not bring herself to tear away her gaze from the wretched scene now unfolding. Children screamed. Parents tried desperately to calm them into an organized line in the center of the rink. Individual skaters clustered into the same line; hesitant, searching one another for reassurance that this was normal. A hush fell; the clamor for answers abated. One uniformed pony skated forward to stand before them all. His eyes were hollow. His face told of countless nights of rounding up strangers and cajoling them into following simple instructions. She had only barely made it out before it was too late, Bubblegum realized. Her eyes scanned the line-up, searched for the stranger that had inadvertently saved her from a fate they would suffer yet still. She wondered if perhaps they had known what was coming. If it had been a kindness, to remove her before that hateful condemnation had been issued from the loudspeakers. There - still inside, damned with the others. All knew, now, what awaited them. It was time... to do the hokey-pokey.

Dark like the chilled, drying, dying branches. She had been so sure of her escape, in those few fleeting moments of safety. The realization hit her like a sack of damp salt to the stomach. Grey, not mauve. She had mistaken Winter for Autumn, and it was time, now, to pay the price of that fatal error. Bubblegum cried out in vain as she was dragged back out onto the uneven flooring, half tied skates scrabbling pointlessly for purchase. The fetid air snatched away her cries with sick delight. She'd never stood a chance. She couldn't skate to save her life, let alone to escape a rink turned dance floor. No. It wasn't fair! She had been safe. Surrounded by the stench of stale food in a mass produced carpet, with her ears throbbing from music played too loud to distinguish, but still, safe from this torturous rite..! "...You put your right hoof in, and you shake it all about..." Bubblegum tunelessly croaked out words to a song she could have sworn she didn't know, through a shaking voice choked by tears. A child yelled the wrong line, out of sync, with all the enthusiasm of someone who didn't yet know better. Someone threw a sweaty shirt on the floor. The wheels of a weathered old skate squeaked rhythmically to protest the continuing dirge. "You do the hokey-pokey and you turn yourself around..." The emergency exit caught her eye just long enough to realize it was guarded. As skaters either struggled or failed to turn themselves around, as two collided and one parent stifled sobs, Bubblegum gnawed at the laces on her rental skates, tried to ignore the discoloration, the patches where a green-yellow crust had formed. If she could just get them off- just the front two, at least! The employee would have to stop, or escort her off; it was strictly against the rules to be on the rink without skates. She gagged at the rancid flavor. Left hooves went in, shook about, and a set of wheels clubbed her in the cheek for daring to dream of a life before. What cruelty fate had wrought. She could have been anywhere else... But would it have mattered, really? Could the unrelenting drone ever truly be escaped? "...You stomp your whole self in... You stomp your whole self out...." This- this was the hokey-pokey. Nothing else meant anything. Eventually, it all came back here, to this, to the cheap lights disguising stained walls, to the child smearing what might have been cheese or snot or both across the wooden floors, grinding and smoothing it in, like part of the finish, as they performed the haunting motions... of the hokey-pokey. Everything she'd ever done had led here. No more did she gnaw for her freedom. The dance claimed them all. It mattered not what tears or blood were shed; nothing mattered save the completion of ancient steps recorded for the ages by those who no longer hokey-pokeyed among the living. Perhaps their spirits were among the skaters now, watching over them with ghoulish, hateful grins curling up their cheeks. Perhaps that was why the child now fell into the same monotone as those who'd come before, the same tears tracing tracks in the fur of their cheeks. Their foalish whimsy was gone, for the realization must now have set upon them, too: that their destiny had been here. That all they would do after was nothing, in the face of what they did now. Civilizations had risen. Clashed. Fallen. Revived, rebuilt, clashed; survived, faced plague and famine, drought and war, all for the macabre reasons that were chanted over again in drear tones. They did the hokey-pokey. That was what it was all about.
