She lays them out in a careful cir... View MoreAs evening falls, Rowen prepares a ritual. First the candles, each a deep blue which seems to glitter when tilted just so, as if the ocean itself had been condensed. She lays them out in a careful circle of five. Next is a little pouch apparently fashioned of a pale leather. She loosens the drawstring that holds it closed just a little, and at a measured, steady pace, she pours out a finely ground powder of salt and… something else, not quite white. With this, she creates a circular border inside the candles, and another outside. Each candle receives its own circle as well. As she tilts the pouch back to halt the flow, the sun dips beneath the horizon. Rowen remains placid, lighting the candles each in turn and whispering something to each. A secret, perhaps, or some Latin chant. The last candle lit, she steps back and watches in a moment of silence. Shadows dance away from the light of the flames. Her little gazebo takes on an eerie green glow. Good. Rowen raises her head high. “To those caught between planes, the messengers of the intangible, I give a message to relay. Pass it on, if you will, and I will show my gratitude with offerings.” She waits as if for an answer. One by one, the green flames grow large and crackling, but never crossing the lines laid on the stone floor of the gazebo. This seems to be what she wants - the snowy white pegasus claps her hooves together. A mad grin crosses her features She tosses forth one white feather, watching as the currents of the air cause it to dance between the flames. At long last, it passes a breath too close to a candle, catching and falling to cinders in the passing of one more. The candles fade, all but one growing dim and small. Rowen is still and silent for minutes, then hours, watching that candle until the moon is bright and full in the sky, and until it too softens to a gentle paintbrush of a flame. The candles go out all at once. A cloud hides the moon. Darkness floods the place, but Rowen remains calm and quiet until a heavy presence settles in the center of the two circles. “So… you up for a game of checkers?” A deep sigh. “You really need to get out more, Rowen.” “…I’ve got a deck of cards? We could play poker.” “No way. I heard what happened to Frankincense last month.” “Go fish? OG? Uno, final offer. Wait, where are you going? I’ve got, like, three souls to wager! Come back!” The moon is out again. There’s nothing in the circle except for a little frowny face scorched into the stone. “…Damn.” #rp
