This might end up being more than one blog simply on the area of length.
I wanted to express my headcanon for the magic in the show and use in roleplay from my point of view, this is by no means a hard rule that I expect everyone to abide by when they RP with me, but it is the line of thinking that I follow whenever I make a pony who has a basis around magic.
On the forefront there inherently are two kinds of magic, active and passive. Passive magic is the type of magic that isn't cast or actively used via horn, crystals, tomes, etc. Active magic is performed by a pony, such as levitation, teleportation, conjuring light, etc.
Passive magic is the easiest to summarise, every pegasus has passive magic in the form of flight, weather control and the ability to stand on clouds, while some of the earthpony population is blessed with... extra physical strength and a heightened connection to the environment. Passive magic takes no direct energy expenditure to take advantage of as it comes naturally. The amount of passive magic one has, for example, can affect how well a pegasus can fly or control the weather. Nine times out of ten, you'll see active magic being used by a unicorn as they are the most common users of said magic, however as stated above, really anyone can use active magic with the use of third-party items. They incorporating the usage of levitation or short-distance light teleportation into their everyday lives.
Unicorns do have somewhat of a disadvantage with magic. Unicorns have a pool of magic they can pull from, some unicorns having a large amount of magic potential and some smaller. Ponies also have different capabilities with how much magic they can draw from at once. For most unicorns, such a thing isn't a problem, however, in rare cases, a unicorn can pull from more magic than their horn can handle, damaging the horn. Adversely more often than useful, unicorn magic can be inhibited with some enchanted or carefully crafted items, dampening or completely shutting down the use of magic. The most common form of this is a ring that goes on a horn, however, enough load can break through the flow-stopping effects if one horn doesn't turn into confetti first.
Do you know what is jazzy? Enchanted objects. Rings, bracelets, armour, etc, all have the potential for enchanting, different materials have different upper and lower limits for the magic imbued into them. Leather will be less attuned to magic holding than silver or gold, however, boosting the enchantment can be as simple as forging in magic crystals (Or not that common since scarcity is a thing). Magic crystals tend to be a soft hue of magenta, a powerful crystal is obvious to unicorns as it gives a tingly sensation to the body (Kinda like when your arm gets 'static-y') and lets out a low and quiet hum. Size is less important than the purity of the crystal formation, having a big lump of rock made into your gear can be cumbersome, so typically smaller and more powerful is simply better.
Thanks all I can think of putting my say on for the time being. Happy to answer questions and might make a part 2.

The element of magic is purple therefore I see the general basis of magic as purple. However every pony has their own magic colour/signature

I thought that all of this was just how /everyone/ has magic as, aside from the magentaness?

This didn't answer my confusion
I didn't realize any of this was unique, this is what I've gone off as the basic magical theory my whole time Rping.
Muladhara is red, that is at the base of your spine and it represents your most physical nature. Each energy center going up your body shifts in hue like the rainbow and becomes less physical and more spiritual until you reach the top of your head which is violet. On a color spectrum, magenta is the... View More

@icy creation (cant tag you) it isn’t unique more than a headcanon being what I go off of. If I was to dissect deeper into how I go about it I am sure there would be differences. People can have similar headcanons.
