View MoreAfter an admittedly uncomfortable night's sleep, new Appaloosa resident Makabe, and his family are awoken by a knock at their door. Taking a quick look outside of his bedroom window shows Makabe that the sun has only just begun to rise over the horizon. It must be at most 6 AM. Who could be knocking at this hour? Makabe slips into his boots, and shuffles out to his front door, where he sluggishly opens it. He is met by the familiar face of one of the local rangers, Dusty, and another, older man who he doesn't recognize. "Mornin' Mr. Makabe. Sorry tah wake yah so early, but mah uncle said we gotta get an early start if we want tah get the most important fixes done 'fer nightfall." This is followed by the older man sticking out his hand, though his gruff scowl doesn't change. "Name's Sturdy Woods. This knucklehead here is mah nephew." Makabe manages to shake the man's hand, but before he can say anything else, Sturdy turns around. "C'mon boy! Ain't no sense in wastin' time!" Turns out, Dusty's uncle was the local carpenter, and a pretty good one at that. Throughout the morning, and afternoon, Sturdy, Dusty, and Makabe work on fixing up the house. They patch a hole in the bedroom wall, a few smaller holes in the ceiling, and even manage to replace the planks in the living room floor. Throughout the day, Johnny helps out where he can, and Zevanah make sure the four are well hydrated, and fed. During the afternoon, Sturdy, and Dusty stand atop the house's roof while they align a board. Below, Makabe holds the ladder, and Johnny stands beside him with nails in hand, and an open tool box beside him. "Hand me a hammer, and a few nails, will yah Mr. Makabe?" Sturdy calls from the roof. "Of course!" Comes the response. Little Johnny hands his father one of the hammers from the toolbox, followed by a handful of nails. These are then passed up to Sturdy, who gets into position to hammer a nail into the board. From below, Makabe hears Sturdy bring the hammer down onto wood. This is followed shortly by the sound of the hammer hitting a nail, quickly followed by the hammer hitting wood again. "Con sarn it boy! Hold the dang board still!" Sturdy's sudden outburst causes Johnny to jump slightly. "Ain't mah fault you can't hammer worth a scrap! Ah didn't even move the board on the first whack!" Dusty's response sounds as though he's trying not to burst into laughter. "Boy!" Makabe sees a hammer raised into the air. "I ought tah smack you upside the head with this hammer!" This elicits a few stiffed chuckles from Dusty. "You'd best wipe that grin off yer face, boy!" Judging by the laughter now coming from Dusty, he did not in fact, wipe that grin off his face. It's then that Zevanah appears from inside. "Boys, it's getting quite hot out. Perhaps you should come inside for a while, and eat some lunch." As Sturdy comes down the ladder to head inside, Makabe hears him grumble up to Dusty. "Yer every bit a jokester as yer father was. It's like the goofball ain't never left." This is met with another chuckle from Dusty. "Well, somebody's gotta keep yah on yer toes!" "Boy. If you weren't mah nephew, ah'd be in jail fer murder." #rp
