Then, the hillside on the edge of Appaloosa was full of townsfolk, there to mourn those buried on it. In front of 23 graves, Reverend Dawn celebrated the lives of each and every Appaloosan who had died at the hands of the Lone Star, and his band of outlaws. An hour ago, the hillside was filled with tears, and the cries of families mourning the losses of loved ones. Now, the hillside is quiet, and empty. Save for one figure.
Dusty Trails kneels before the second to last grave marker on the side of the hill. He says a prayer for Mr. Marcutti, the man buried under this marker. Just as he has done for each, and every marker before this one. He prays that King Solaris, wherever he is, watches over the man's soul. He prays that the king will guide his soul to a peaceful afterlife, where he may rest eternally. He apologizes to the man for not stopping the Lone Star sooner, and for the pain his family will experience as a result of Dusty's inaction. Once his prayer is finished, Dusty slowly pushes himself up to his feet. His legs groan in complaint, but he only gives them a light pat. "Almost there. Just one more."
Dusty moves to stand before the last marker. A straw doll resembling a Dawn Ranger rests next to it. The name on the marker reads only "Johnny. Honorary Deputy Ranger." A hot mist forms in the corners of Dusty's eyes. He tries to blink them away, only for his vision to blur momentarily. With a deep, shaky breath, Dusty lowers himself to a kneel before the marker, and bows his head. Dusty gets through his prayer to Solaris mostly fine. He wipes a few tears from his eyes, and sniffles a little here and there, but manages. When it comes time to ask Johnny for forgiveness Dusty just can't bring himself to do it. He knows Johnny can't respond, but that he would forgive Dusty anyway. Yet, Dusty doesn't believe he deserves the little zebra's forgiveness. He had a whole life ahead of him. A loving family, hopes, dreams, and a bright future. All that was taken away from him because Dusty didn't do what he knew needed to be done in the first place. Instead, he tried to play by the rules, and Johnny died because of it. The image of Mrs. Zevanah screaming her child's name echoes in Dusty's mind.
A firm hand on his shoulder snaps Dusty out of his spiral. He lifts his head to see the face of Misty Steps staring down at him. Usually, the man's face is hard and impassive. Now however, it glows with a softness Dusty has never seen from the man before. "Ey Ranger. The fellas down at duh saloon are gettin' worried 'bout 'cha. Told 'em I'd bring you back, alive. Dusty gives the Dusk Patrolman a nod, and takes his hand to be helped to his feet. " 'Preciate it pardner." Dusty says with a tip of his stetson. Misty responds in kind with a tip of his bowler. "Now c'mon. Da boys are all eager tuh buy you a round." With a slow nod, Dusty, and Misty begin to make their way down the hill towards the Saloon. If anything, Dusty can drink himself to sleep tonight.
