View MoreThe very first sunrays were beginning to poke their golden hairs –this is a metaphor– through the windows of Strawberry Cream’s old Smoothie Shop and her little nook right on top of it… Alongside the car horns and other annoying big city noises outside, was her apartment’s equally cheap’s shower running. The clock marked 7:59, and as soon as the hands struck 8 O’clock the mare’s radio should have kicked in with its usual song. Unfortunately, the place was temporarily under new management. Trip Wire emerged from the shower to the sound of Oingo Boingo’s Dead Man’s Party. Making a beeline for the kitchenette's cupboards, he grabbed a fistful of chips from a bag that’d been already opened the night before, and it went straight down his gob alongside a swig of stale take-out soda. Berry’s old Kingdom had seen other minor modifications… Before the stallion could even *think* of going downstairs, he opened his laptop and initiated it. If one was to pay close attention, every wall of the downstairs area –including the stairway going to the apartment on top– had a few webcam cameras crudely duct taped to the ceiling’s corners. Trip checked each of them religiously from his device. No rats today. He was never going to be caught with his guard down again… Atop of every window and door was a contraption he had to deactivate first-thing in the morning, before crossing its umbral. It was a bit tricky, in the sense that if he forgot then he was at an absurdly elevated risk of getting impaled by his own traps. But the desire of catching one of his hunters with them far outweighed his common sense. ‘Sides, he was careful... And nothing could go wrong as long as he didn’t forget to follow that carefully planned routine, right? The traps were inactivated, the cameras were checked, and he closed the laptop again. He checked his watch too, it marked 8:15 AM. His special guests, Carmen Gumshoe and Gray Rivers Alto Yuri, would be showing up in less than an hour. All he had to do was patiently wait for them. #rp

That one would be a hard one to break out of. I mean, at that point it was second nature for him to respond like that, he had been doing it nearly 4 years. Once outside, Gray took the time to do a little stretch whilst Carmine searched their destination. He took his hand when offered and was content just to enjoy the scenery for a little while. They didn’t actually get too far when Carmine briefly paused their walk to give Gray his ‘cut’ of the earnings. The actor arched his eyebrows and received the money with a tilt of his head. Now, he was well aware that he had done nothing, and normally he would’ve tried to return the money. But it wasn’t about that… It was about the partnership. Gray understood from the way Carmine looked and smiled at him. “Why, thank you!” Gray returned with a charming smile, “…It’s a pleasure working with you, Mr. Gumshoe.” he neatly folded the bills and slid them into his back-pocket. It was his turn now, instead of offering his hand he offered his arm for Carmine to loop his own through. Once they’d start walking again, Gray picked up the conversation. “Isn’t it strange…? That guy Trip, he was very… I don’t know, normal? chill?— you know, if we ignore that Berry and he have been putting criminals underground this whole time…” He sniggered. “I can’t believe so much was happening without us knowing…” “It’s partly our fault we never reached out… Well, I never reached out. Sorry for roping you into it.” Gray offered a gentle smile. “Do you remember how you said you wanted to take a vacation, to go back to Haybale and finally meet your parents? …I want to make some changes too. I want to get involved…” “I mean, we’re young! We have all of this world to see and… all these things to do.” He sighed, that kind of longing sigh that looks forward to the future. “As much as I love to sit around and watch TV with you… I think we should go out more. A-and we should put more care into our friends and family. What do you think…?” “We’re going to go dancing… and we could invite Berry to have lunch with us sometimes… I miss walking around the beach at night. It’s a little creepy going out alone, but…” Gray hummed playfully “…if you’ve got nothing better to do…?”

Gray's loving gestures and warm words were exactly the right temperature to melt Carmine's could shoulder and icy heart. It still didn't fully register... even as Gray spoke his sweet words, Carmine's complicated viewpoint of it all didn't really change. Yes, they belonged together. He believes that, he's accepted it, but that didn't mean 'he' belonged. For all the cases he's solved, and all the chances he's had to prove himself, he is still nothing but a hayseed who got lucky. That nasty little scratch has never left the back of his mind, and who's to say when it will? On the opposite spectrum, Gray was the spitting image of success, despite his current circumstances. He was on posters, in movies, he's sent signed merchandise and all... It didn't make sense what he was thinking. It really didn't, but it didn't change how he felt. But he couldn't let the actor know that... even through the crux of their conversations were similar to debates about feelings and what 'something' means, this was one discussion he'd rather let slide. "I know, Gray." It was worthy of a kiss. Hell, it was worthy of one of those long standing kisses that were always saved for the near end of the movie, when the two finally get a moment and mash lips to a swelling orchestra... but he remembered how important this date was. How much it meant for Gray that everything was 'just right.' But his kindness couldn’t go unrewarded, could it? No. As soon as Gray left an opening, Carmine would pull himself to the actor’s side and plant a kiss right on that cheek. He pressed hard; he needed to know Gray felt the love! “I must be usin’ up my life’s supply of luck after landin’ you.” The walk continued up until they turned a corner to the Rivertrot Mall. It was a large building, one of the largest malls on this side of the country, with a large variety of clothes, goods, and all that capitalistic mall goodness. Signs from the oh, so helpful directories managed to land the pair smack in the middle of the eastern part of the mall, where all the clothing shops had more or less coalesced into one massive section full of easily recognizable brands. “Alright. You’re the fashion guy. Where’re we going?”
