View MoreThe very first sunrays were beginning to poke their golden hairs –this is a metaphor– through the windows of Strawberry Cream’s old Smoothie Shop and her little nook right on top of it… Alongside the car horns and other annoying big city noises outside, was her apartment’s equally cheap’s shower running. The clock marked 7:59, and as soon as the hands struck 8 O’clock the mare’s radio should have kicked in with its usual song. Unfortunately, the place was temporarily under new management. Trip Wire emerged from the shower to the sound of Oingo Boingo’s Dead Man’s Party. Making a beeline for the kitchenette's cupboards, he grabbed a fistful of chips from a bag that’d been already opened the night before, and it went straight down his gob alongside a swig of stale take-out soda. Berry’s old Kingdom had seen other minor modifications… Before the stallion could even *think* of going downstairs, he opened his laptop and initiated it. If one was to pay close attention, every wall of the downstairs area –including the stairway going to the apartment on top– had a few webcam cameras crudely duct taped to the ceiling’s corners. Trip checked each of them religiously from his device. No rats today. He was never going to be caught with his guard down again… Atop of every window and door was a contraption he had to deactivate first-thing in the morning, before crossing its umbral. It was a bit tricky, in the sense that if he forgot then he was at an absurdly elevated risk of getting impaled by his own traps. But the desire of catching one of his hunters with them far outweighed his common sense. ‘Sides, he was careful... And nothing could go wrong as long as he didn’t forget to follow that carefully planned routine, right? The traps were inactivated, the cameras were checked, and he closed the laptop again. He checked his watch too, it marked 8:15 AM. His special guests, Carmen Gumshoe and Gray Rivers Alto Yuri, would be showing up in less than an hour. All he had to do was patiently wait for them. #rp

It’s not like Gray liked to ask too many questions about it either, he had a feeling that the memory brought his friend grief. So, it always came as a surprise that Carmine would bring them up out of his own desire to talk about it. …That wasn’t the only reason though; as little sense as it made, Gray couldn’t help but to feel as though he were a homewrecker. Sure, it’s not like Carmine had maintained an active relationship with Valor’s kin, yet… the fact that they were estranged and in bad terms with one another was saddening, and he had a feeling that him waltzing into Carmine’s life at this point had closed every single open door there might have been there. He rubbed the back of his neck and averted his gaze, only returning into the conversation once Dr. Sawbones was brought into the equation. “I doubt it could have been her… She dislikes you, but she likes me.” Gray bragged. “…And I think she might like Berry too? I honestly think he must have moved on entirely.” Gray frowned greatly. “That’s Valor’s family though…” “So? The only reason you’re accusing Lorne is because he’s the one you haven’t personally met.” Trip chimed. “That’s—” “That’s really cute Gray, but you need to grow up. Not everybody you meet is a good person by default. Thought you’d have learned that by now with that 7-inch-deep scar on your side.” “Nnng...” Gray glared, “Shut up! Honestly, Carmine had just shown him how he had emptied the gun! The two next rules made a lot more sense though, and if Carmine had never mentioned it, it’d never have occurred to Gray that bullets don’t just stop at their intended target. He frowned as soon as he learned the fact. After all, in movies the bullet always seems to stop existing as soon as it hits whatever it is supposed to hit. He never had to worry about it because his prop guns were never loaded. “You know what…? I’m glad I told you about this.” Gray scoffed nervously and rubbed the back of his neck with the same nervosity. No wonder Hermes had to flee. The actor was most likely the most dangerous thing in the room that time, even to himself! The check in was suspiciously simple, and Gray also had no issue with any of the handled equipment. It felt rather strange wearing all that protection and taking all those precautions when he already knew that the moment he’d need to draw a gun for real, none of those safety measures would be around. It almost made the whole thing appear ridiculous. Now, Gray was standing right ahead of the targets. He reached for Carmine’s gun at the counter and held it the way he’d been taught. It was a decent single-handed grip; however, the rest of his stance was clearly more focused on looking good rather than bracing for recoil and maintaining the sight on the target. Actually, Gray was very clearly aiming nowhere. There was no strategy extending beyond that barrel, it was pointed forward yet… even though Gray was looking at the target he wanted to hit, it wasn’t through the gun’s sight. “…Like this, and then I just press the trigger.” His grasp around the magazine was also somewhat weak. If he were to shoot, the recoil would tilt that barrel upward, completely missing the mark. “Right?”

Truthfully, Carmine’s never worked in this situation… most parents end up finding their kid pretty quickly; it’s only days after the missing is reported that Carmine actually gets involved. What does he do? “Dunno. Never done this before. I guess the next best thing would be to ask if he knows of any place else. Poor kid can’t reach his own dad…” It’s sad no matter how he looked at it. But! The despair was set aside while St. Nick on the ice cream stall filled out their order. After taking payment, he brought the kid’s out first. Then Carmine’s, and finally the actor’s. Janus seemed happy… very happy, actually! Carmine seemed happy, too, but he was still ‘on the job.’ They may not be paid for it, but it wasn’t any less important. With nothing further to discuss, Carmine ate his cone along the walk… Of course he did offer Gray a lick. They were at that level, right? The comic book store, Comics & Pages, were among one of the more popular comic stores in the city. It had near everything beneath the ‘Nerd’ umbrella, such as tabletop games, comics, anime and manga… it even had a few imported figurines and replicas for those willing to shell out some serious dough. It was never super quiet, but the buzz inside was beyond normalcy. Banners and signed indicated that the newest issue of some book dropped, with the impact being the big reveal of the biggest baddie of this particular series, ‘Autonomous Greg.’ “Well that’s a stupid name,” quipped Carmine as soon as he walked in. About a dozen nerds snapped their heads at the red detective and glared… But the biggest defender of them all? None other than Janus. “It’s not a stupid name!” he didn’t sound actually angry, but it was worthy of a reprimand. “It has meaning! Autonomous Greg is a robot, the first who could be piloted without a Diver.” Carmine still didn’t get it… “Like a scuba diver?” “No! No, when you pilot a bot, you have to Dive. You connect with them and control them from outside. Like remote control from your brains! Anyways, Autonomous Greg was *just* Greg until his creator wanted to stop pilots from dying from conflict with Dark Plaza.” “—That name’s even worse!”
