View MoreThe sand-yellow mare looked at Crone with a deeply mixed expression. Fractal layers of surprise was the unifying theme in the emotions that Crone's presence evoked. "Well, this is an auspicious meeting." She took a sip of her drink, never taking her eyes off Crone as she contemplated her approach. Her eyes then drifted to her drink. She needed a real drink, one that would actually have an effect on her. Her hoof reached into her mane, and pulled out a small chrome vial, unlatched and opened it, and added a single drop to her drink, then stirred it. She was quick to seal and conceal the vial again. She then bit clean through part of the rim of the glass and swallowed it, hopefully ensuring the same glass would never be used again, then took a long swig and sighed. "That's more like it..." she said as the supernatural poison worked its way into her veins and started trying to strangle the life out of her. It was kind of like a heart attack all over, a tension, trying to implode her. And then an ice cold chill as cells died. Then a warmth as they refused to die, showed their true colors and shed their facade of being mild-mannered pony cells and acted swiftly to contain the threat. The end result was a brief respite from her body's constant interwarfare, a temporary drop in her metabolism, a slowing of cognition not available to her by any other means, and a drop in inhibition was one of the consequences. It was one of the only two things she carried with herself at all times, and the less dangerous of the two. She had social anxiety herself, for the same reasons Crone did. And her sympathetic anxiety, caused by memories of being in this same scene before, but on the other side needed to be silenced. Otherwise, her desire to overshare may really get the better of her. She exhaled in relief as the memories faded away to dust, letting her get on with her current life, then turned to Crone with a friendly smile, "Well, you've come to the right mare if you're looking for open-minded. Name's Tality, Mare of the Apocalypse." She holds out a hoof in greeting, her smile betraying how much she's enjoying this encounter already.

Ordinarily, she's quite the ethical predator, paying close attention for signs of intelligence or precious bonds that would be cut short before their time. But every once in a while, she has sated her other urges, and finding creatures well outside the bounds of civilized society but still sapient enough to give her the high she needs was a delightful discovery -- or so she thought. Still, the way she preys upon monsters is not so different from the way monsters prey on ponies. The statement about skinwalkers was not simply exaggeration, she sensed. "Huh. Do you see a double standard in that? Because it seems to me both sides are horrified by the grisly murder of their own kind. The only difference is who one perceives to be a part of their herd, and who is the purveyor of a grand injustice." She swirls her drink as she begins to wax philosphical. "It is the nature of life to prey on other life. Cats kill birds and rodents even when they don't need to eat. It's said to be for fun, but the true reason is resource denial and prestige, to be the one leaving behind scraps for others instead of the one scavenging from their better's kills." She sips her drink again, the squeeze of the poison feels so reassuring, like her mother's attempts to smother her in the cradle. She had turned out not to be helpless, the prey became the devourer, then as now, as the poison succumbs to her body as her mother succumbed to her mind. A beautiful metaphor. She smiles in masochisric pleasure, enjoying the way in which her statements hurt her. "Make no mistake, the universe runs on suffering. Even plants suffer as they die, they scream with every voice they have. Ponies just think it's the smell of fresh-cut grass, but it's chemical signal, a desperate call for help. Even bacteria, and our very cells feel pain. But we didn't make the world what is it. We're just forced to live in it, or not live at all. Hardly a choice." She turns to look at James Crone now, "but it is the nature of intelligence to understand the game, and it is the nature of the game that there is strong advantage in cooperation, and thus comes empathy, and thus can we draw lines in the sand about which suffering is needless and abominable. To own a piece of something that preys upon ponies is to show others that you are above the mundane. A striving towards godhood, a subconcious striving to escape nature's cruel game altogether, so deeply buried that we truly believe that we just enjoy the novelty of its texture, the luxurious feel, but it's only by understanding the full context of what's written into our genes that the full truth is laid bare." "So ponies and cats and monsters are not so different. In fact, I'd say we're all just overgrown colonies of bacteria, all drowning together and trying to climb out on each other's heads. And in the end, it's all vanity. The void will claim everything, in the end." "(Except me)" she whispers, just loud enough to hear, then downs the rest of her drink in one go, nearly blacking out in the process, doubling up with a grimace, a black substance leaking from her ears, eyes and mouth for a few moments, before it suddenly absorbs back into her skin and vanishes. The greed of ponykind is nothing compared to her own body and its powerful desire to hold her shape at all costs. She recovers, inhaling sharply as her lungs finally stop spasming, her expression gleefully exultant at how strong the sensation of being alive resurges after being nearly snuffed out. This poison provides such a cornocopia of wonderously terrible sensations. With a slightly more sober smile on her face, she turns to James, resting her chin in her hooves. "There are some who say that lifespan correlates with one's place in the food chain, that you deserve to be prey on whatever you're able. Are you that kind of monster king, James Crone? Or are you the idealist? Harmony will always offer a pathway to join the herd, but giving up your nature, your heritage, what makes your people them is a hard ask. What is your vision of the future?"

She looks into her empty glass, wanting to take a sip right now to excuse her pause, and slams her glass on the counter just loud enough to get the bartender's attention, "another, please! And I'll pay for the glass." The bartender gives her an odd look, but interrupts his current conversation to start making her a drink. She deflates, sighing heavily. "I've ruled before. Towns, cities, countries, worlds, systems, sectors, galaxies, it's always the same. I'm just one pony, even if I dedicate all my time to rooting out this kind of exploitation, it keeps happening all the same. It's the nature of a power differential, it starts as negligence, ignorance, a blindness with no malice behind it, then somepony ambitious jams their crowbar in and pries the wound wide open to drink their fill. Scum, all of them." She sneers, venom dripping from her voice. She looks at James as he expresses his concern, and is confused at first, then nods calmly. "Ah, yes. No, I'm fine, that was recreational for me. My cells are rebellious, cancerous, actually. If they weren't so dead-set on being a part of me, they'd be off tearing apart the planet, like some kind of grey goo, probably, with how freaking good they've got at surviving stuff. Still, they run out of fuel, and that's it. Kerput, like any other cell. Really, I'm as much monster as I am pony. Actually, I might be more monster than pony, still not sure. If I were, though, I'd be a monster among monsters. Especially considering the things I've done." She nods gently, a little phased out of reality, talking perhaps a bit too freely. She pops the glass in her mouth suddenly, and chews, the glass tinkling in her mouth as it's crushed up. She's careful to keep her lips closed, but there's little signs of pain that indicate that the glass is doing to the inside of her mouth exactly what it ought to. Then she tilts her head back and swallows the mass of sticky, blood-covered glass. She leans her head comfortably on a hoof and looks at James again, "so, uh, maybe it wasn't obvious, but I am absolutely on board with hunting down the scumbags responsible for the organized slaughter of your people and giving them what they deserve." She grins suddenly, almost involuntarily at the thought of it. Hunting down the truly vile is always a treat. The bartender, for his part, has turned white as a sheet and a bit green around the gills. He carefully sets Tality's drink down and beats a hasty retreat to the other end of the bar, hoping he can cleanse his mind of what he just witnessed.
