He must have exchanged at most 4 words with Carmine ever since. The dinner and the flower bouquet that had been left at the coffee table were still there 2 whole days after. The flies couldn’t be happier about it though. Gray…? Well, he was just glad there had not been a funeral yet. Although, -as far as he had listened in- the chances of Berry ever waking up again were faint, and her state was still critical. He was sprawled across his bed. It didn’t seem to matter that it was 2:34 PM already. One would think that they’d both be glued to Berry’s room at the hospital, but that… well, that was reserved for family. Surely her parents were still there. And Carmine…? Gray had hardly seen that stallion’s shadow ever since they had returned home that night. He did not know what the best route of action with him was… Whether if he should continue to leave him alone, or…? He frowned… At times like these his last conversation with Berry returned to haunt him. Looking back from where he stood now, he finally understood why she was so eager to rush things between the pair. And he had promised her that he’d take care of him. Hah… if she were to wake up now, she’d surely bonk him in the head. He was slacking off… wasn’t he? The actor pushed himself up to sit in the middle of his mattress, the light from the window hit his face and he was forced to shield his eyes with an arm. Carmine’s door was just across the narrow corridor, and it was still shut. Seeing that, Gray simply inhaled a deep breath and got up. He wouldn’t go harass the detective right away, no… He couldn’t help anyone if he didn’t help himself first, and he was in no shape to lift anybody else’s spirits. The first order of the day was to take a shower, and as his second mission he made a trip to the living room and kitchen. The rotting food would be scrapped off the plates and tossed away. Then the plates themselves were rinsed. It was all done in quiet. But it was far from peaceful. The clock’s tic tacking was sinister and void. At any moment the telephone could ring with the news that nobody wanted to hear, but that everyone was expecting… 40 minutes later, the sound of sizzling butter and the scent of somewhat burnt hotcakes filled room. Gray was not a great cook; he actually had a talent for ruining the most basic of meals. He was blowing at the pan as he desperately tried to remove the remains of what should’ve been a perfectly round hot cake from his burning pan. Instead, he ended with a charred mess. The second and third tries looked somewhat better, but they’d never win a cooking contest, that’s for sure. Shortly after, two plates were freshly served at the dining table. Gray had conserved the withered flowers and placed them into a vase, even though they looked terrible. He couldn’t get himself to throw them away. 4:30 pm. That’s when Carmen Gumshoe’s door was first knocked on. Gray waited outside with his food ready to be delivered. He did not know what to expect, but he at least had to try. #rp

But still Gray often forgot they even had cats, maybe because they were only ever present whenever Carmine himself was around. The next thing he noticed was the laptop. His eyebrows arched gently; it was relieving to find out that Carmine was not just curled belly-up into a corner like a cockroach after a pest control visit. He was active… And even responsive enough to crack a joke about his awful cooking. Gray cast him a side glance and scrunched his muzzle. “I was worried about you…!” *If worst comes to worst…* Gray’s brows furrowed again, that time it took a lot more will power not to tear up. Damn it… damn it… damn it! That was a very real possibility, but why did Carmine have to remind him in such a grim manner? Berry would be fine! Gray muttered, “I’ll tell Berry what you said when she wakes up…” and huffed. He began to gently pull away in order to actually hand the detective the mediocre hotcakes plate he had prepared for him. A stack of 3 squished-looking sad and misshapen hotcakes topped with a piece of butter and some honey. Gray had poured it in a smiley face purposefully. But the bread was still steaming and by the time it was ready to serve, the honey had spread and dripped everywhere. Oh well… Carmine’s tone turned rather bitter and serious. It wasn’t surprising that the PI was furious and hungry for revenge. Gray expected as much, however, the actor was surprised to learn that his friend over there was missing that much key information that had already been relayed on them that night. Gray looked into Carmine’s eyes with disbelief, frowning. “…But he did say why. Do you not remember…?” The actor searched through his memories and then recited by heart, “It was revenge. He said he would do what they all had failed to do. He mentioned 3 names…” Gray reminded Carmine. The only reason he remembered so vividly was due to the setting, to be quite honest. Since it was played out like a theater piece it was easy for Gray to retain it.

Gray had not wanted to even peek back into his memories… but if it served to buy Berry’s safety, then he had to at least try. It all started with one deep breath and a fearful glance he casted in Carmine’s direction. “I don’t know if… I don’t know if I caught that, it was so dark and… the lights… the mural… whew.” Gray remained close from him, where he felt relatively safe. Actually, he was glued to the detective’s hip as he retold the incident as he had lived it within his own skin. “Berry was tied to a chair over there… and the psycho… he was standing over there.” the actor pointed. “Remember…? I… I’m pretty sure the ‘audience’ was over here too.” Gray guided the pair to the front row and demonstrated with his arms. This whole time he had only been counting 3 figures… but once he was standing there, he realized that he might’ve had the number wrong. “…I can’t tell whether if it was 3 or 4 of them…” it would be up to Carmine to corroborate or deny it. It all depended on if they had paid attention to the same details. In their state, who could blame them for missing a few? “I remember he said something like… Viper… and… April? And… Agh…! I don’t know!” Gray rubbed the side of his head, growing increasingly frustrated. “All I know is that one of them had a very… cowboyish name and... another one reminded me of pizza… one was a month and… ah, there must have been another one that completely escaped me.” “…Hmmm… I remember that they didn’t match at all. It really was like an assortment of all kinds of people. Not a single repeating theme. I’m sorry if this is unhelpful.” Whilst the actor burned his head trying to remember the names and other remarkable aspects about the dummies. It should be noted that the droplets of blood indeed seemed to follow some kind of pattern. If one were to look closer, they’d begin to see what appears to be bloody handprints across some of the knocked over seats, and perhaps a trail of shoeprints too…? They were faint and erratic, like someone had -not walked- but barely dragged themselves around like a wild, injured animal. They originated from a corridor beyond the conveyor belt, and then followed a path leading into an unexplored area within the building. None were close to either of the rooms and corridors Carmine and Gray were already familiar with. Meaning: they didn’t originate neither from the main entrance nor from the corridor the detective and actor had taken that night after passing by ‘Trip’s station’.

Carmine could sense his friend’s hesitation, and his fear. He, himself, could only remember the faintest ghost of an answer… like looking at a bird fly above, but you only catch its shadow. You know what it isn’t, and maybe with that knowledge you can find what *is.* “Hey.” His volume tuned down close to a gentle whisper. He more or less forced Gray from his personal bubble, but only long enough so that he could place his hands on the actor’s shoulders. But something possessed him, a ghost, and it told him to bring those warm hands up to his cheeks. “Don’t get in your own head, Gray. Anything you tell me’s super important, okay? You’re a tremendous help and my only lifeline. Just look at me. Don’t look at the blood… just tell me what you know, and we’ll find shit that can prove you right or wrong. So, we have… Three? Maybe four. These guys were important to him somehow. So much so that he made a twisted execution with them as the spectators. So I’m positive these guys hold some meaning.” At some point during his pep talk, his thumbs began to idly rub the actor’s cheeks. It was involuntary… maybe even unnecessary, but maybe it helped calm him? He didn’t even know he was doing it until well in to the action, which he quickly corrected by pulling away. “Uh, uh— anyways. Since you’re the theater kid, I wonder… why build an Alice motif? Like, look at the twisted mural. It’s got the Mad Hatter… the March Hare, the Dormouse and…” Huh. Looking at the mural now, from the audience’s viewpoint, he was able to notice a funny detail. The mural was detailed in a way that it had been painted by hand. The Mad Hatter, March Hare and Dormouse all sat to the right of where the chair would have been, eyes all pointed toward the empty seat. Carmine remembered how the black light trickery had completely changed the tone of the usual happy-fun chaos that was the iconic tea party. That seat, which is now empty and crushed on the conveyor belt, was made for none other than the fourth guest… “Alice…”

As far as he knew, his cousin’s attacker could be sitting right in that building belonging to Bull and Mako. Was he enjoying lunch with the company around him? What does this freak even eat? Then, began to think about poor Strawberry… and the talk he had with her the night before. Regardless of how she lived life, she was full to the brim with it. And now she’s a vegetable, tied together in a humiliating network of machines and tubes just so she can stay alive. Berry’s brain dead imagine continuously popped up in the corner of his eyes. Then, like a transparent image over Bull & Mako’s Loan Services… “Then just stay out of the way.” Carmine then stormed out of the vehicle, leaving Gray and the poor, poor confused old cab driver to sort out whatever was going on. The man did not understand tone, nor could he really read the room, so he just shifted the vehicle in to park and reached over his passenger seat for a newspaper. “I’m keepin’ the meter goin’.” Gray had overestimated the place horribly, which may have been a saving factor that kept the detective still breathing. There was one guard there, one, and he was *not* in good enough shape or preparation in order to stop Carmine. The instant the red stallion came in, he locked eyes, saw the ‘guard’ stamped on his chest and punched him square in the jaw when he saw him reach for the mace on his belt. The guard could only exclaim a “What the fu—” before he was ‘censored’. The secretary stallion is one Carmine had seen before. The Bull. A large, large man about thrice the detective’s size, but his downfall was in being, for lack of a better word, a weenie. “Oh shit!” the giant man cried. Carmine’s back and he took out his guard just like that! He put his hands up, but that didn’t mean he surrendered. While Carmine was busy with poor, old Joe the security guard, Bull carried his giant ass over to the only other door in the building, the office in the back. He shut and locked it promptly. “Where is he?!” The detective shouted just before the door cracked. “I— I don’t know who you’re talking about!”

Nothing bad ever happens to my characters, famously. “We’ll come back for you.” Just hope for Trip to live by, but as Carmine said earlier… better a stranger than Gray or Berry. The passing of a random friend of Berry’s would haunt him, yes, but the previously mentioned would absolutely wreck him once more. With Carmine once again taking the lead, they were brought to a scaffold of aluminum stairs. They were not enclosed, hell, there were barely rails, but that wasn’t the most dangerous thing in the room. As soon as they made it down the first flight, they’d be greeted with a large atrium. Years ago, this room was used to belt pig carcasses for processing. Some ground, sliced, we all know how meat is made. Somehow, the griffon from earlier had created a mock stage using the remains of this building’s guts. Thousand-lumen flashlights had been tied to the rafters and brought down to shine on the stage itself— a very wide conveyor belt with none other than the mare of the hour: Strawberry. She had a few cuts on her cheek, but nothing that suggested serious medical attention. Mere scratches. The mare herself was tied to a chair by way of zip ties. Behind her was a twisted backdrop of the Red Queen’s garden from Alice in Wonderland, complete with corrupted depictions of the curious little girl’s friends say around at a tea table with their hateful eyes all made to look like they were leering at Berry. Everything outside of the small halo around Berry was pitch black and unable to be seen. But what would a theater be without an audience? Rows of charred seats were sat in front of the execution ground, though only four were occupied… none by ponies. The first was a fabric mannequin. A sandbag, with a single black dot on its forehead. The second mannequin was western themed… cowboy boots, hat, and a faux gun on its lap. The third only wore a bike helmet, and the final in biker clothes and fishnets. The music swelled. Something was happening soon.

He didn’t look good. ‘The police will get to him; they’ll know what to do.’ The actor thought to himself in order to keep calm. How grim… walking out on a stallion in that bad of a shape was basically murder by inaction. Gray wasn’t a killer, not even close. The guilt would eat him inside, even if he knew that they were going forward for Berry’s sake. As if the inner turmoil wasn’t enough on its own, the building was barely held up by hairs. Every step they walked could’ve been a fatal death trap. Not because it was actually boobytrapped, but because of the fickle infrastructure. Gray clutched Carmine’s sweater on their way down the scaffold’s first floor. “Please be careful.” He begged nervously of his companion. He was terrified not only of falling, but of witnessing the other fall. …All those superficial worries all disappeared soon. On the first floor a crude stage had been set up. The music was louder there, there were lights and everything. Gray could not believe his eyes at first glance. There was even some creepy scenery and… and that person at the very center…? No way… it was Berry! Gray had to physically cover his mouth again, this time in an attempt not to scream and gasp in horror. The sight was sickening to him. Berry seemed physically fine, but Gray couldn’t shake the horrible sensation of seeing her trapped so helplessly and in such a horrific setting too! He nearly felt sick. Gave Carmine’s sweater a couple desperate tugs. “no no no no…” “It’s Berry…!” Gray cried out in a shaky whisper, his eyes were already swelling with tears of pure panic and fear. “He’s going to hurt her…!” he added breathlessly. Gray was convinced instantly. That stage was the work of a maniac, a cruel, deranged maniac! …And it had his friend! As the show began, Gray felt compelled to run. His body language indicated it. He was thinking of going for the center of the stage if only he could unfreeze! But he was static, he was… Petrified in place, that’s why he hadn’t moved. The intention was there, but his body was still not responding.
