Stoo... View More2/20, Ponyville Rec Center Ice Hockey Rink, 2nd Quarter, 11:42 on the clock. The score is 1-2. Ponnyville third line defenseman Evan Fields switches places with first line defenseman "Big Red." Stood behind the bench his coach, Nar, can tell by his body language that Evan is frustrated. With good reason too. He's the guy in charge of locking down Vanhoover's third line right wing, and so far, he's had little luck. The right wing has scored both goals for Vanhoover so far, and has gotten more shots off on goal than any defenseman would like. If this keeps up, Vanhoover is going to run away with this game. As their second third line defenseman skates to the bench to swap out, he, and Evan share their frustrations with each other. 'Think Nar. You were a defenseman in high school. Put yourself in Evan's skates. There has to be a pattern here. What commonalities have you seen when the right wing gets the puck? First goal, Evan approached him from his left. The winger spun around him, and used the momentary lapse in Ember's vision to score. Second goal, Evan came at him dead on. He made a pinpoint turn, got behind Evan, then beat Ember in a 1 on 1. What about all the shots on goal, or the times he's passed?' 'Hold on. He's only ever passed when Evan came at him from his right. Blocking any route to his right, and his shooting lane. Maybe if we pressure him from his right, and set it up so it looks like he has a perfect passing lane, he'll take the bait, and we can get a turnover.' Both third line defensemen look over their shoulder as their coach's hands rest on their shoulders. "Boys, I want you to try something the next time that right wing gets the puck. Evan, approach him from his right, your left. Kiln, stay a little behind whoever his passing option is. He should go for a pass. When he does, Evan, get your stick out there, and deflect it. That should leave Kiln in a good position to take possession, and pass it up the rink." The two boys nod in agreement. It's a better plan than either of them could come up with right now. A few minutes later, as both third lines are out in the rink, the two defensemen enact the plan. Kiln lags slightly behind Vanhoover's forward as he races down the ice. The right wing closes in towards the goal, but finds his route blocked by Evan, approaching from his right. He sees his forward in an opportune passing zone, and goes for the pass! Evan's stick flashes out at the last second, and the puck is deflected back down the ice! Kiln scoops the puck up, then passes it to his forward. "Counter!" Vanhoover's right wing screams back to his teammates, but they're too far out of position to stop the shot on goal! A few moments later, a whistle sounds! The score is now 2-2! The Rec Center fills with the noise of the cheering crowd. In the stands, the Ponyville High Pep Band begins blasting the school's fight song. Ponyville's still in this! #rp
