((I don't mean to offer an excuse, because I don't feel there is one, merely an explanation and my deepest apology. I fucked up. I should have reread what I wrote with a thought about what it might feel like to be on the other end of it.)) ((My understanding of social cues, especially taboos is really, really wonky. My mother's not just a midwife, but the one who approves the training materials for midwives for DONA, Doulas of North America, and she's a huge, huge advocate for breaking the taboos on public breastfeeding and women's rights in general and she made sure to teach us that women have a right to their bodies, so Tality has the right to think about her body without having to take into account society's fetishization of her body.)) ((Even so, though, nursing is a very pleasurable thing, and Tality's mind was being warped towards it, and it disgusted her, but she's also trying to recover from intense self-loathing, so her ability to feel that is muted. What's going on in her head is really complicated and without all that nuance, I now realize it really, really looks like I was trying to foist something truly heinous, repulsive and unforgivable upon you and your character, and I'm deeply, deeply disturbed that I ever thought it was okay to post something like this.)) I'm just trying not to freak out and yet still make sure I haven't hurt you. She released her hold on the earth that kept dirt from being swept up with the geyser. Severe dehydration generally requires IV fluids, as the dying body won't be able to absorb the water quickly enough to recover, due to the buildup of toxicity over several days. If this was -- as the evidence suggested -- caused acutely and recently, then that damage shouldn't have built up yet, but it also wouldn't take long at this level of dehydration to get dire. Just a few hours and then she would absolutely need IV fluids. Still, it seemed like Tality had found her within that critical window, as she immediately showed more life in her. The groundwater contained sufficient electrolytes as well, though it could use more sodium and potassium. Her milk could provide that in an emergency. Already her genetically-engineered triage response was responding to the circumstances and altering the mix in one of her four mammary glands. In a medical context, she wouldn't let any cultural nonsense pollute her thought process. He body had something like a thousand times as much functional genetic code as a baseline pony so it could respond intelligently to obscure situations like this. It was what was necessary to adapt them to survive in space, a much more harsh environment than Equus. Though it had been pushed far beyond that for war, and even further with every successive line that ended with hers. And thanks to all of that effort by millions of scientists over millenia, she was able to save the lives of mares like this one with hardly any effort. She didn't call herself the mare of the apocalypse because she liked them. She called herself that because it was where she could do the most good. But it took a toll on her, one that she was struggling to overcome now that she had finally found her way to her mythical homeland. She sometimes hated what she was because of the fate it had condemned her to. But right here, right now, she was thankful for the gifts she'd been given. Making a difference in a pony's life. Being there for them when nopony else was. That felt good. That felt right. This was where she was supposed to be right now. She tested Little Leaf's muscles, investigating her overall health. She glanced at the vegetation, trying to get a better idea of what had been drained from her body. So far, she's only seeing signs of severe dehydration, the cold muscles, though, are alarming. It takes time to lose body heat like that, so this didn't just happen. Probably it took her a good ten or fifteen minutes at least to make her way out from the epicenter, but probably longer since she was likely disoriented and nearly delirious. But there's reason to suspect that she may have been drained of more than that. Magic could do this, certainly, but if it was a life form of some kind, water is drained as well as nutrients, and that kind of depletion of the body's reserves would take longer to show up. That kind of leeching tends to be uneven, based on the predatory organism's dietary needs and not the victim's, but a complete mineral depletion would have rapid onset symptoms. Lack of potassium or magnesium would cause muscle spasms within minutes as muscles fail to recover after they're used. Iron depletion would cause anemia and oxygen starvation, leading to a quick death when combined with the dehydration. But a deficiency of something like manganese would take much longer to show up, possibly months, and it would lead to bone depletion, failing connective tissue and a whole list of symptoms that could easily fly under the radar since this kind of thing is a complete medical anomaly. To be on the safe side, this mare needs to eat, she needs to replenish all the nutrients her body needs at once, and nutrients only absorb well when they're presented with the right proteins, lipids and carbohydrates to integrate them into the body. What she really needs is an IV drip, but the next best thing is ... well. It's her milk. A complete formula of everything an adult pegasus mare needs was currently accumulating in her front-left mammary gland, with subtle adjustments for her apparent age, wing size, bone density and so on. It might be awkward and taboo, but in the face of an unknown and developing medical situation, you do not fuck around with pony's lives and long-term health. If you have a magic bullet that costs nothing but a moment of dignity, you freaking use it. But as nice as that sentiment was, there were other considerations. Allergies, sensitivities, distress, and she had yet to explore the information that Little Leaf could provide herself. It may eliminate the need to explore that option. And so, finished with her analysis for the time being, Tality checks back in to the real world. She takes a breath to gather herself, and gives Little Leaf her best friendly smile. "Hi! Sorry for the silent treatment, I was making sure you weren't about to die on me." She holds out a hoof, "I'm Tality, and you look like you've been through the wringer. How are you feeling? Any nausea? Cramping? Lightheadedness? Sluggish thinking? Anything that feels like it isn't getting better?"
